The horror genre keeps churning out great movies, such as the intoxicating Hugh Grant thriller Heretic. Part of its success is how it's able to produce movies that not only terrify audiences with gross-out scenes or a well-timed jump-scare, but also be a ton of fun. A great example of this is the Terrifier series, with Terrifier 3's funniest moments arriving among the requisite brutality and gore. Thanks mainly to Art the Clown's silent, but deadly, humor.
However, it's not just more recent horror films that have managed to be creepy as all hell, while bringing some solid fun along the way. Classic franchises have gained popularity thanks to quick-witted villains like Freddy Krueger, who is also incredibly creepy. The great thing about the horror genre is its ability to bring audiences together, to share an experience that'll be intense, and uncomfortable at times, but also a lot of fun.

The bungling of Trick ‘r Treat by Warner Bros. — shelving it after well-received festival screenings before unceremoniously dumping it straight to DVD in 2009 — is well-documented, but had it received a traditional theatrical release and underperformed, there’s a chance it may have never entered the cultural zeitgeist. Instead, its authentic cult roots allowed it to blossom into the contemporary classic we celebrate today.
Trick ‘r Treat stands alongside the opening credits of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers as a felicitous distillation of the Halloween atmosphere on celluloid. Sam, the impish demon played by 7-year-old Quinn Lord that serves as the film’s mascot, personifies the tricks and treats of Halloween while serving as the connective tissue between segments.

Director Mike Dougherty has been slowly pushing forward Trick ‘r Treat 2, the long-awaited sequel to his horror anthology film Trick ‘r Treat (watch it Here). Two years ago, he said the sequel is in “very active development“ and last year he mentioned that there is a “really great script” in place that he wrote with his Krampus collaborators Zach Shields and Todd Casey. He also revealed that the new film will give Trick ‘r Treat’s little icon Sam a “proper nemesis” to face off with. So what’s taking this movie so long to get into production? Dougherty addresses the delay during an audio commentary track that’s included on the newly released 4K edition of the film from Arrow Video (you can pick up a copy at This Link).
Dougherty said, with thanks to our friends at Bloody Disgusting for the transcription, “It’s tricky, because I...

Trick 'r Treat director, Michael Dougherty, reveals that he wants Trick 'r Treat 2 to be as good, if not better, than the original, which is why the development has taken so long. Progress on Trick 'r Treat 2 has been slow since its announcement in 2009, but recently there have been more updates from Dougherty, including the mention of several drafts of a script. Trick 'r Treat 2 will not feature the original cast, but the anthology format allows for endless character possibilities, ensuring a well-thought-out story for the sequel.
Trick ‘r Treat director explains why the development of Trick ‘r Treat 2 has taken so long. Directed by Michael Dougherty, Trick ‘r Treat is a 2007 comedy-horror film featuring five interwoven Halloween stories. Trick ‘r Treat stars Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes, and Quinn Lord.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures brought director Mike Dougherty horror anthology Trick ‘r Treat (watch it Here) to home video in October of 2009 – and fans almost immediately began asking for a sequel. Fourteen years later, we’re still waiting for Trick ‘r Treat 2 to make it into production. Last year, Dougherty said the sequel is in “very active development“. Now, during a Q&a that was conducted for a screening of Trick ‘r Treat, Dougherty has added that Trick ‘r Treat 2 already has a really great script in place.

"Trick 'r Treat" has hit milestones many horror movies don't even dream of in the 15 years since its festival release, playing hip film festivals, earning a comic book adaptation, and even inspiring a section of Universal's Halloween Horror Nights attraction. Yet somehow, the film has never gotten a proper theatrical release until now. This fall, Warner Brothers is set to remedy that. According to the official WB Classic Films Twitter, "Trick 'r Treat" will be playing in Regal Cinemas just in time for Halloween.
The theatrical announcement seems somewhat spontaneous today, as it seems a horror-loving Twitter user was among the first to pick up on the upcoming release. On Wednesday, Twitter user @dansferatu shared a post about Regal's October lineup, which in addition to "Trick 'R Treat" includes "The Lost Boys," "Scream 2," and "Halloween." WB Classic (@wbclassicfilms) then shared that user's tweet a day later with the caption,...

(Warning: Some mild spoilers for Season 3 of Amazon’s “Man in the High Castle”)
Eric Overmyer swears the third season of Amazon’s “Man in the High Castle” isn’t a response to Donald Trump.
“I banned the ‘T’ word in the writers room,” Overmyer, who took over as showrunner this year, told TheWrap. “I wanted to let the current situation resonate with the show by itself. I didn’t want it to dictate our narrative.”
But the real-world parallels of a show that not only imagines Nazi Germany’s victory in World War II — subjugating much of America in the process — but the spread of its fascist worldview, are hard to ignore. Put it his way: The tagline for this season is #ResistanceRises.

We're at a transitional phase in American history, and The Man in the High Castle is following suit.
Just as it has recently been difficult to watch programs such as the recently departed, award-winning The Americans, the science-fiction alternate reality of Colony, and the world we never want to become on Emmy-winning The Handmaid's Tale. The Man in the High Castle forces viewers to think.
In the alternate aftermath of World War II in which the Axis won dividing the United States into the Japanese Pacific States, the Neutral Zone, and Nazi America, it's not easy living for those now living in the territories. Even those fully converted with their oppressors struggle to accept what was with what is.

Amazon’s panel for “The Man in the High Castle” was full of intriguing tidbits about the upcoming third season, giving fans plenty of sci-fi weirdness to ponder while they wait for the show’s return on Oct. 5.
Amazon played fans a new clip from “deep, deep in Season 3” of the show, which takes place in a world where Nazi Germany has taken over much of the United States. The footage finds Alexa Davalos’ character Juliana Crain skulking around in an underground tunnel with her resistance allies, including new main cast member Jason O’Mara, adjacent to what appears to be some kind of Nazi facility. Meanwhile, U.S. Obergruppenführer John Smith (Rufus Sewell) is also in the facility, and a Nazi scientist is sort of vaguely explaining what this place is.
The gist is that the Nazis have built the tunnel around an “anomaly,” and they have a machine that interacts with it “perfectly.

[Mild spoilers for “High Castle” Season 1 below.]
The word “Nazi” is, on so many levels, an ugly one. The hard Z sound seems to match perfectly with what the word represents to us not just historically, but in the all-too-recent present. It’s a word that has a visceral impact, and that’s why its use on “The Man in the High Castle,” Amazon’s alternate-universe period drama, always brings with it a touch of horror, because it’s used casually in conversation. It’s not a slur. It’s a part of daily life.

Amazon’s Emmy Award-winning drama “The Man in the High Castle” envisions a world where the United States lost WWII, and Japan and Germany rule the country. Ahead of its Season 2 premiere, the streaming service released the first two minutes of the new episode, which shows student life in Nazi-ruled America.
The clip begins with Thomas (Quinn Lord), son of John Smith (Rufus Sewell) arriving to school. All seems normal as he walks through the hallways, enters his classroom, helps a buddy with a detail in early American history, and is then chosen to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
“I swear I will observe the law, conscientiously fulfill my duties at home and school, be faithful and obedient, and pledge absolute allegiance until death to the leader of the Nazi Empire, Adolf Hitler,” the students recite.

The dream came true on October 28th, 2013 at Los Angeles’s Egyptian Theater, where the 2013 Beyond Fest was being held. Trick ‘r Treat (2007) was appropriately closing out the evening, but the viewing began with a Q&A session including director Michael Dougherty, producer Bryan Singer, actors Dylan Baker, Brian Cox, Quinn Lord, Jean-Luc Bilodeau and host Seth Green. While a reunion between these actors and filmmakers was special, the real magic came when Sam, the famous character/holiday mascot from Dougherty’s film, came on stage delivering a message for Dougherty to make a sequel, which was echoed by Legendary Pictures producer Thomas Tull. An already raucous crowd amplified their applause when a banner for Trick ‘r Treat 2 appeared on the screen behind the panel.

When best friends Michael and Matty make a pact to lose their virginity before prom, a spanner is thrown in the works when Matty comes out as gay. Trying to work out their new situation, Michael makes it his life ambition to continue the pact no matter what. Together, they start on an adventure of calamity and hi-jinx as they try to find their place in the world, how their lives have changed because of it and who can they persuade to have sex with them before prom night is through.
Date and Switch definitely suffers from that classic ‘teenager romantic comedy’ syndrome where it is all about sex and, namely, having it before a certain time limit is up.

This was much to the joy of fans who were gathered in La to ring in Halloween with the stars of Trick 'r Treat, including Dylan Baker and Brian Cox, and host Seth Green. Also, producer Bryan Singer made a surprise appearance! Trick 'r Treat starred Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, Quinn Lord, Lauren Lee Smith, Moneca Delain, Tahmoh Penikett, Brett Kelly and Britt McKillip.

Today is of course Halloween, which means only one thing. Actually, it means many things. But most important of all those things is that FEARnet’s 24-hour Trick ‘r Treat marathon kicked off earlier this morning, and runs straight through to tomorrow morning – the entire day of programming devoted to the spooky sights and sounds of the ultimate Halloween horror flick!
Think you know everything there is to know about Trick ‘r Treat? Take a break from the marathon by checking out a list of ten things you just might be surprised to learn!
1) Writer/director Michael Dougherty’s original idea for the film was for it to be an anthology of stories that had no direct connections, tales that he envisioned would be directed by different horror filmmakers. Development executives weren’t so keen on the idea, which prompted Dougherty to repackage the concept – deciding to connect all of...

I’ll be honest. Trick ‘R Treat is a cult horror movie that completely passed me by. The film, cobbling together four short “tales of terror” into a cohesive horror anthology of yore, has been a favorite Halloween movie since it arrived in theatres in 2007.
It’s only risen in stature and popularity since, and it seemed like that groundswell movement reached its crescendo last night at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood for the finale of American Cinematheque and Amity’s Beyond Fest, one of the best film festivals in recent memory. The folks at Legendary teamed with the theatre to throw a bash, and provide a free screening for ardent fans of the picture. Tickets were snapped up within hours online, and the line to get in gave me a mini Comic-Con flashback. A lot of fervor for a Monday night screening, but I doubt anyone in the audience left disappointed.

As we inch ever closer to Halloween, the treats have been coming in hot and heavy here in the horror community. First we found out that Clive Barker would be writing Dimension's remake of Hellraiser, and then we learned that both Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi would be returning for Army of Darkness 2. As exciting as those two tasty bit of news were, not even they can hold a candle to the announcement that was made last night...

Last night, Trick ‘r Treat showed as the closing night film of Beyond Fest in Los Angeles. The event was pretty well promoted and showed incredible support from Legendary Pictures which has now become a behemoth studio behind Nolan’s Batman films and more. They even provided a Livestream of the film and the Q&A after. However, there were some technical problems at the beginning which were resolved not too long into it. Sadly, I fell asleep due to me being old. I woke up this morning and found out that, as I predicted (seriously, not trying to be a douche) that Trick ‘r Treat 2 has been officially announced.
Luckily, Legendary published the Q&A on their YouTube channel, which I have included below. It’s about 18 minutes long. An unprepared Seth Green hosts the Q&A that has Quinn Lord (Sam), Trick ‘r Treat director Michael Dougherty, Bryan Singer,...

It’s Halloween - the perfect time to enjoy cult flick Trick ‘R Treat. The anthology film is tied together by the appearance of Sam, a mysterious little trick-or-treater who embodies the spirit of Halloween and kills anyone who breaks the rules of Halloween. We spoke to Quinn Lord, the kid who played Sam, about how a child handles such a tough role.

Michael Dougherty's Trick 'R Treat is hands down my favorite Halloween movie of all time! Ever since it was released on Blu-ray in 2009 it's been a tradition of mine to watch it every year on Halloween. Legendary Pictures is holding a special screening for the film at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood CA this Monday. I'm going, and it will be the first time that I've watched the film on the big screen! I'm incredibly excited about that.
Dylan Baker and Brian Cox will be in attendance with the director and actor Seth Green will serve as the moderator during a question and answer session after the film.
The poster above was created by artist James Fosdike, and fans who attend the screening will receive one of them. 100 numbered prints and 85 glow-in-the-dark variant edition prints will go on sale at the Odd City Entertainment store the following day.

Chicago – I may never know how “In Their Skin” came into being, but I have a pretty good theory. Screenwriter/star Josh Close was so appalled by the unapologetic bleakness of Michael Haneke’s “Funny Games” that he took it upon himself to make the exact same movie, more or less, but with a much happier ending. It’s a noble effort but every bit as pointless as Rod Lurie’s proudly non-misogynistic remake of “Straw Dogs.”
Perhaps Close was so offended by the killers’ blasé approach to offing a rich family in Haneke’s film that he wanted to illustrate how white upper class folk are every bit as prone to suffering as the rest of us. “We’re not perfect!” shouts Close at his captor, a ruthless madman hell-bent on stealing his identity. Instead of finding their home invaded by two creepy male sociopaths, the innocent trio of...

Imaginaerum is a dark fairy tale from Finnish director Stobe Harju. Filmed in Canada, this title seems like an ambitious tale for a first time director. The film's story involves a composer who has succumbed to an illness. Tom is now in a coma. In his unconscious, Tom dreams up unbelievable scenes and scenarios. He fights both light and dark forces as he tries to recover his physical awareness. Currently, there are no plans to distribute this film in North America. However, the Imaginaerum soundtrack will be released in this territory in January of 2013. Fans of the imaginative can view the film's official and very stylized trailer below. Director: Stobe Harju. Writers: Stobe Harju, Mikko Rautalahti, Richard Jackson, and Tuomas Holopainen. Cast: Tuomas Holopainen, Marco Hietala, Marianne Farley, and Quinn Lord. If there is one thing us horror fans are leery of doing it would be going out to an isolated, cut-off-from-the-world destination. Simply put, we know better. That’s not say we are agoraphobic but don’t be surprised if have some sort of escape or contingency plan for the situation of a possible home invasion. Trust us, it is for the best. After watching In Their Skin (formerly Replicas), my position on this matter has not changed.

Chicago – The set-up for the domestic horror of “In Their Skin” immediately brings to mind excellent thrillers like Michael Haneke’s “Funny Games,” David Moreau & Xavier Palud’s “Them,” and Bryan Bertino’s underrated “The Strangers.” There’s something inherently terrifying about being assaulted in a place you consider safe – your home. When home is no longer protected, what is? Sadly, Jeremy Power Regimbal’s intense drama doesn’t offer anything significant to a horror genre filled with superior choices. Regimbal does the best with what he’s given but it’s Joshua Close’s obvious script and a mediocre ensemble that fail to deliver.

Canada, 2012
Following a still raw and recent family tragedy, Mark (Joshua Close), Mary (Selma Blair), and their nine-year-old son Brendon (Quinn Lord) take a therapeutic sylvan sabbatical to their family cottage. One morning, they are unceremoniously introduced to the Zakowski’s, an overly ingratiating family consisting of a married couple, Bobby and Jane, and their big-for-his-age son Jared (James D’Arcy, Rachel Miner, Alex Ferris). After, when Mark is obligated to invite them over to dinner, things start to spiral into a dark and perilous situation when the true intentions of the Zakowski’s are slowly revealed.
Initially, In Their Skin is often gripping and tense. The film plays on a primal level of fear that we can all identify with, the fear of letting something dangerous into our homes. The characters are put into real and unavoidable...

Chicago – The true power of a bump-in-the-night type film is not an overt or bloody attack on a person, but the anticipation or psychological elements that precedes the main event. Director Jeremy Power Regimbal has a fine example of that type of thriller in his new film, “In Their Skin.”
The film is his directorial debut, after success as a producer and in various production capacities. It features familiar character actors Selma Blair (TV’s “Anger Management”), Joshua Close (“The Master”) and James D’Arcy (who portrays Anthony Perkins in the upcoming “Hitchcock”), and deals with a sense of unease regarding a couple (Blair and Close) who are dealing with a tragedy by getting away from it all in a woodsy vacation home, and their new neighbors who have a penchant for wearing out a welcome.
