Maria was born in Zweibrucken Germany on December 8, 1976. She moved to the States when she was five years old. She attended Overton Highschool of Performing Arts in Memphis, TN, and graduated in 1995. She graduated from the University of Memphis with a B.A. in Film and a minor in Theatre and English.
Her father is half Nigerian-American and indigenous and her mother was born and raised in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
