Nominations for the 2025 Drama League Awards were announced Tuesday by current Broadway stars Sarah Hyland (The Great Gatsby) and Orville Peck (Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club). Winners will be announced May 19 at a ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.
The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and off-Broadway productions and stand out for their catch-all acting category, the Distinguished Performance Award. An actor can only win it once in their career. After they have won, they can never be nominated again. This year, 51 performers are nominated. There is no crossover between members who vote on the Drama League Awards and the Tonys, but the nominations can nevertheless be revealing as to which performances and productions break through, or not, with this group’s expanded categories.
One of the most shocking results of the nominations is the complete omission of The Hills of California. The Jez Butterworth play is one of...

Since premiering in 1597, William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet has endured as one of the greatest and most tragic love stories ever written. It's been performed countless times all over the world. On Broadway alone, there's been a grand total of 37 productions. Since the Tony Awards were established in 1947, there have been six revivals up for consideration, and all were snubbed for the prize.

Throughout her esteemed career, Mia Farrow has earned seven Golden Globe nominations (including a win for 1964's Guns at Batasi) as well as three BAFTA bids. Yet notably she has never been recognized at the Emmys, Oscars, or Tonys. This year, she might finally add a major peer group bid to her résumé: a Tony nomination in Best Actress in a Play for The Roommate.
In 1964, Farrow burst onto the scene in a major way. She not only had her aforementioned Golden Globe win for Guns at Batasi, but also her role as Allison MacKenzie on the first two seasons of Peyton Place. The former didn't result in an Oscar nom and, despite getting in at the Globes for the latter, it didn't translate to an Emmy nod. In 1968, she starred as the title character in Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby. Her performance resulted in Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Werewolf by Nightdirector and incoming comic book writer discusses the possibility of another streaming special.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his upcoming Marvel Comics one-shot, Werewolf by Night director Michael Giacchino responded to questions of returning for another horror-fueled MCU outing with, "I think I would like to do something with the story that we created for television, but that's got its own thing going and it doesn't quite slot into what's happening currently in Jack's life in the Marvel [comics] world. So there's a little bit of navigating there."
Giacchino went on to note the drastic shift in production for various streaming platforms and studios following the recent decline in the industry. "I would love to do another Werewolf by Night [special] more than anything," Giacchino explained. Welcome to Tony Talk, a column in which Gold Derby contributors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan offer Tony Awards analysis. On the heels of The Picture of Dorian Gray's opening night, we reconvene to debate the merits of the performance and its Tonys prospects.

David Buchanan: The much-anticipated, Olivier Award-winning production of The Picture of Dorian Gray just opened, and we've both had the chance to attend Oscar Wilde's tale of aestheticism and debauchery. This mounting earned mostly glowing reviews from critics, but not everybody was equally enamored with the technology-forward take on the classic story. But before we dive into the modernity of it all, let's tackle the heart of the matter, which is Sarah Snook's bravura performance. Apple TV+’s Sugar is adding some serious firepower for its second season. Jin Ha, Laura Donnelly, and Tony Dalton have joined the Colin Farrell-led noir drama as series regulars, expanding the show's already pretty stacked ensemble. Ha, best known for his role in Apple’s Pachinko, will play a boxer with a habit of getting caught up with the wrong people, while Donnelly (best known for The Nevers) is set to play a character who is remarkably immune to Sugar's usual charm and charisma. Must be pretty strong willed, if you ask us. Lastly, Dalton will take on the role of a Lieutenant in the LA County Sheriff’s Department.

Exclusive: Sugar, starring and executive produced by Colin Farrell, has added three new series regulars for next season: Jin Ha, Laura Donnelly, Tony Dalton
Ha is one of the stars of Apple TV+’s historical drama Pachinko, which is still on the bubble, awaiting word on a Season 3 renewal. His casting in Sugar would not impact Pachinko; he would be able to do both.
I hear Ha will be playing a boxer who frequently gets caught up with the wrong crowds. Donnelly is believed to be playing a woman who is immune to Sugar’s (Farrell) charms; Dalton would play a Lieutenant in the LA County Sheriff’s Department.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had its fair share of ups and downs since the release of Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The release of the fourth Avengers film came at the height of the McU's popularity, capping off the unanimously-praised Phase 3 and bringing an end to the Infinity Saga. However, Marvel has struggled to maintain the same level of success in its new Multiverse Saga. While certain films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine have achieved widespread success, others have proven to be decidedly less victorious. Marvel fans seem to be swinging back and forth between great projects and mediocre ones, leaving the general feeling of the MCU to be uneven and troubled.

When there's a final season of a series, usually if there's characters we haven't seen in a while or that need to wrap up their stories in a way, a show will bring them back to say goodbye. It still hasn't hit me that Outlander season 8 is the final season on Starz. Though we will get there eventually, but one character won't be around in those final episodes.
Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts told TVLine that Jenny Fraser Murray, aka Jamie's headstrong sister and Young Ian's mom, will not be in Outlander season 8, aka the final season. Honestly since the historical drama changed up her plot from the books anyway, this makes sense.
Roberts shared that because the last season, which does not have a release date yet, is only 10 episodes, there's only so much story they could cover and adapt from Book 9, "Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone,...

There's only one season left before fans say goodbye to Outlander forever. No more Jamie. No more Claire. No more Jamie and Claire. We don't know exactly when the eighth and final season will air, but filming has been done for a while and the clock is ticking.
Outlander is based on a series of books by author Diana Gabaldon. By and large, the TV show has adapted one book per season. But with only one season left, it's going to have to skip over some of the source material. “The brief was: Nothing that doesn’t affect Jamie and Claire gets in. It’s gotta affect Jamie and Claire," co-showrunner Matthew B. Roberts told TVLine about the final season. He said that while the winding plots of the books make them "readable and fun...when you have 10 episodes, you have to stay literally on track.”
That means some things are going to get cut.

Outlander is approaching its final season, so there is only so much time left for some of our favorite characters to return. While Jamie and Claire have consistently stood as the central protagonists of the Starz series, they have come to know dozens of additional characters over the years. Some of these have been friends and family, while others were instead mortal enemies. Still, each impacted Outlander's overarching story to the point that their absence has been a bit disappointing.
Many characters that have stopped appearing in the Outlander TV show are still present in the books. Their absences may come down to the availability of their actors, or perhaps the writers for Outlander have simply deemed them unnecessary to this version of the story. Regardless of the reason, it would be a shame for the romantasy series to come to an end without these characters getting at least one more appearance.

Ahead of season 7 part 2’s premiere, it was revealed that several major characters from the past seasons were set to return in Outlander, including Jenny Murray, who was last seen in season 3. Part of the reason behind the Lallybroch matriarch’s prolonged absence was Laura Donnelly’s commitment to other projects, including HBO’s The Nevers and multiple Broadway shows.

The theater pieces that resonated most this year were stories of communal, collective healing—not quite feel-good but feel-connected. Curiously, several of the shows on this list staged emotional scenes of family reunifications. Seeking patterns as a critic, it’s tricky to separate the personal emotional response from trends in theatermaking, but it seems like audiences wanted catharsis in the theater in 2024. That was especially true for something like City Center’s Ragtime, which offered both an emotional indictment and hopeful vision of the nation that audiences sought out in the days following the election.

The final episodes of Outlander’s seventh season finally returned to Starz in November, and fans couldn’t be more excited. When viewers last saw Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitríona Balfe) in the midseason finale, the pair were on their way back to Scotland with Young Ian (John Bell) after more than a decade away. During the show’s third season, Ian was captured by pirates, prompting Claire and Jamie to go after him, which eventually took them all to Jamaica. After reuniting and attempting to return home, the trio were caught in a hurricane and washed ashore in America, where they ultimately decided to stay. Needless to say, it’s been a long time since they were all in Scotland, which means quite a bit has changed, including one major actress.

Outlander season 7, episode 9 has finally brought Jenny Murray back to the screen, though she looks a little different these days. Jamie's older sister and the matriarch of Lallybroch hasn't been seen in the fantasy series since way back in season 3. Up to that point, she had been portrayed by Laura Donnelly, but since Claire and Jamie's adventures took them far away from Scotland, there wasn't much opportunity for Jenny to return. However, Outlander season 7, episode 9, included a heartwarming reunion, but this time without Donnelly.
In Outlander season 7, episode 9, Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian finally make it back to Lallybroth in Scotland, something they have been trying to do for several seasons. Fellow Outlander fans, we are back, Finally! It has been a literal eternity (or since August 2023) since we have been in the world of the Frasers, but I am so happy to be back!

Outlander returns in just a couple days for the second half of its seventh season, over a year after part 1 wrapped up. You might look at that long wait and conclude that this is effectively season 8, but they're calling it season 7, part 2, so let's just run with it.
When last we left them, Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) were returning to Jamie's native Scotland, with Young Ian (John Bell) in tow. That means they'll be reuniting with characters fans haven't seen in a while, including Young Ian's father, appropriately named Old Ian Murray. Actor Steven Cree, who hasn't played Old Ian since season 4, talked to the Daily Record about what it was like to be back on the show.

Hulu’s FX-produced limited series Say Nothing, like its source book by Patrick Radden Keefe, takes its name from the striking 1975 poem “Whatever You Say, Say Nothing,” by Seamus Heaney.
It’s a sad and angry piece that looks at the unfolding tragedy of the Troubles, critiquing simultaneously the culture of enforced silence that repressed free speech within Northern Ireland and the voyeuristic instincts of the outside media covering “the Irish thing.” The poem is dazzlingly focused on speech and storytelling, the power and limitations of words in contrast to what Heaney refers to as “Northern reticence, the tight gag of place / And times.”
Keefe’s mission, and the mission of Say Nothing creator Joshua Zetumer (RoboCop, the 2014 one), is to break through the silence. To use a different metaphor, it’s about the disinfecting power of sunlight. It’s also a chronicle of Northern Ireland reported on by...

Last month playwright Jez Butterworth brought his latest work, “The Hills of California,” to Broadway. The haunting family drama explores the relationships between four sisters and their dying mother in their creaky seaside home, seamlessly moving back and forth in time between 1976 and 1955. The play previously bowed in London earlier this year, and before coming stateside it earned two Olivier Award nominations for Best New Play and Best Actress for Laura Donnelly, who reprises her performance in New York.
Since his Broadway debut only 13 years ago, Butterworth has quickly established himself as one of the theater’s most accomplished contemporary playwrights. He has two Tony nominations to his name, for New York debut “Jerusalem” in 2011 and for his Tony-winning epic “The Ferryman” in 2019. Those nominations alone already tie him with theater royalty including Ayad Akhtar, Tony Kushner, Tracy Letts, David Mamet, Lynn Nottage, Eugene O’Neill, and Wendy Wasserstein — all...

Jamie Fraser's fate in Outlander season 7 part 2 is a major question after the new trailer. Jamie is known for cheating death on many occasions, but the official trailer for season 7 part 2 leaves his survival a mystery. For now, at least, it's unclear what plan the series has for the beloved character and a long-term staple of the Outlander cast.
Starz release of Outlander season 7 part 2 official trailer reveals the TV series could avert from the books with one major detail. Jamie's teased death appears different from the novel, leaving room for fans to wonder if he is truly dead. That doesn't seem impossible, especially since some changes will likely have to happen with the series ending after season 8 when there are 10 books. However, Jamie and Claire's love has trumped every obstacle, and with Outlander season 8 still to come, Jamie could live through season 7 regardless.

A Werewolf by Night sequel is still in the cards at Marvel Studios. Michael Giacchino, the acclaimed composer-turned-director, recently explained what is currently holding back Marvel from greenlighting a follow-up to the 2022 Disney+ special.
While speaking alongside his son, Mick Giacchino, with Brandon Davis (via X) about their composing work, Giacchino briefly touched on the status of Werewolf by Night 2, revealing, "There's been a lot going on in the industry and everyone sort of recalibrating. I think certain things had to be just put aside for the moment." However, the filmmaker promised Marvel Cinematic Universe fans that the project was not dead yet, optimistically adding, "We'll get there."

Werewolf By Night, Marvel Studios' first ever Special presentation, debuted on Disney+ in 2022, and opened the door to a whole new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that's yet to be further explored.
The black-and-white Halloween Special really was a first for the franchise, paying homage to the classic Universal monster movies with its noirish style, creepy atmosphere and heightened levels of violence.
Werewolf By Night introduced several new characters such as Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly) Ted, aka Man-Thing (Carey Jones), and the titular lycanthrope himself, Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), and fans have been eager for an update on their potential return.
Director Michael Giacchino previously confirmed that discussions about doing more with the characters have taken place, but it sounds like any plans for a follow-up episode have been put on the back-burner.

In an era dominated by larger-than-life superhero flicks, sometimes a change of pace works like a charm. Marvel Studios learnt that with its first ever special, Werewolf by Night, a 53-minute long movie (some believe that it borders between the idea of a movie and a show).
Starring the likes of Gael Garcia Bernal, Laura Donnelly, Kirk Thatcher, and Harriet Sansom Harris, the special was held in high regard by both fans and critics. Given its reception, it did not come as a surprise that people want more of it. And director Michael Giacchino might have the positive update all of us were waiting for.

“I can’t bear it,” Emily Webb mourns in the final minutes of Our Town, spectrally revisiting childhood scenes of her family after she’s been laid to rest. “They’re so young and beautiful. Why did they ever have to get old?” The unendurable passage of time haunts not only Kenny Leon’s wispy but lovely production of Thornton Wilder’s American epic (the fifth Broadway revival since its original 1938 run), but also a new spellbinding play recently arrived from London, Jez Butterworth’s The Hills of California.
If Wilder, in eschewing the use of scenery and most props in Our Town, was an early minimalist, Butterworth imagines his worlds on a maximalist scale. His last Broadway play, the thunderously searing The Ferryman, featured a live goose, rabbit, and baby on stage. And though The Hills of California has no animals to speak of, it has a beast of a set from Rob Howell,...

Below, find the plot of each play as well as the awards histories of its author, cast and creative team, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“The Roommate” (opens September 12; closes December 15)

The production stars Golden Globe winner Mia Farrow and three-time Tony winner Patti LuPone. It is directed by three-time Tony winner Jack O’Brien.
