There will be no second season for CBS’ True Lies. The network has canceled the reboot of James Cameron’s hit 1994 action comedy movie after one season. The news comes ahead of the show’s Season 1 finale on May 17.
The decision is not surprising. True Lies has not been able to find an audience, ranking as CBS’ lowest-rated scripted series of the season. Its ratings remained relatively steady, indicating a loyal core audience, but they stayed low.

Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

The CW just picked up three of its six pilots to series, Batwoman, Katy Keene and Nancy Drew. Here is the status of the three that were left off, Glamorous, The Lost Boys and Jane the Novela.
Glamorous remains in contention, with a pickup decision will come soon, possibly before the CW’s May 16 upfront presentation; The Lost Boys will be retooled and re-piloted off-cycle; while the Jane the Virgin offshoot Jane the Novela is not going forward.
Glamourous, which hails from Damon Wayans Jr. and his Two Shakes Entertainment, writer Jordon Nardino and CBS TV Studios, had been considered a leading contender alongside Batwoman, Katy Keene and Nancy Drew and was the only original concept in the bunch.
Written by Nardino, Glamorous centers on a gender-nonconforming recent high school graduate (Ben J. Pierce) who lands the gig of a lifetime interning at a cosmetics company whose products he panned on YouTube.

The CW will close the book on “Jane the Virgin” this spring. But fans may get to dive into another chapter of Jane Villanueva’s world — or at least the one in her mind — if the spinoff pilot, “Jane the Novela,” gets picked up to series.
But does the possibility of a followup series mean other members of the “Jane” universe will be following creator Jennie Snyder Urman and star Gina Rodriguez (who will reprise her role as Jane as the narrator of the spinoff) over to the project?
“Probably not in the first year,” Urman told reporters while discussing the final season of “Jane” alongside Rodriguez, during the Television Critics Association’s press tour Thursday. “It’s imagined as an anthology, ’cause telenovelas are close-ended and it feels really exciting to be able to tell this kind of emotional, dramatic, scary, funny story all in one season.”

While Jane the Virgin will be ending for good with its fifth and final season beginning on March 27, that doesn't mean the magic is over. The CW has officially given the green light to a Jane the Virgin spinoff pilot, adorably titled Jane the Novela.
Though there's no word on which of our favorite Jane the Virgin actors will star in the spinoff, we do know that the show will be a telenovela anthology in the same vein as its sister series. Each season will be based on a different fictional novel "written by" Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) and narrated by the author herself. The series's first installment will take place at a Napa Valley Vineyard and focus on a family whose secrets don't stay buried for long. As usual, the CW made the bulk of its pilot pickups in one fell swoop, and the network is betting heavily on IP this year. It greenlighted four pilots tonight — all based on well known titles — two spinoffs of existing CW series, Riverdale and Jane the Virgin, a Nancy Drew drama and The Lost Boys reboot. The join the recently greenlighted Batwoman pilot starring Ruby Rose.
The Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene, which follows four Archie Comics characters, and telenovela anthology series Jane the Novela both hail from the creative auspices behind the original series: Jane creator/executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman, star Gina Rodriguez, exec producers Ben Silverman and director Brad Silberling. and studio CBS TV Studios, and Riverdale creator/executive producer Robert Aguirre-Sacasa, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV.
The untitled Nancy Drew drama, inspired by the classic mysteries, comes from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Fake Empire and CBS TV Studios, while The Lost Boys is from Rob Thomas’s Spondoodle, Gulfstream TV and Warner Bros TV.
I hear the CW is not done picking up pilots, with The La Complex reboot among the scripts that have been heating up. As usual, the network split its pickups down the middle between its sister studios tonight, with two orders to Wbtv and two to CBS TV Studios.
The CW originally developed a series adaptation of the iconic 1987 Warner Bros horror comedy movie The Lost Boys with Thomas writing during the 2016-17 development season. While the project didn’t go to pilot, the network brass remained very high on the title and had been looking to redevelop it. While Thomas has been busy with his Veronica Mars reboot for Hulu, a take by writer Heather Mitchell got everyone excited, and the new incarnation picked up steam this development season.
Katy Keene, centered around the budding fashionista in New York City, is the second Riverdale spinoff. The First, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, started at the CW before moving to Netflix where it has been a breakout hit. Aguirre-Sacasa, who co-wrote Katy Keene with Riverdale co-executive producer Michael Grassi, said last summer that the new offshoot is “very different from Riverdale.”
Today’s orders give Berlanti Pords. two pilots at the CW, Katy Keene and Batwoman.
Written by Jane scribe Valentina Garza and directed by Silberling, Jane the Novela is envisioned as a soapy, telenovela-inspired anthology series in the tradition of Jane the Virgin, where each season is based on a different fictional novel “written by” Jane Villanueva and narrated by the author herself. The first installment takes place at a Napa Valley Vineyard.
The spinoff already had gotten a blinking green light, with the mothership’s casting directors Alyson Silverberg and Jonathan Clay Harris tapped to cast it.
Written by Noga Landau (The Magicians), the untitled Nancy Drew project is centered on 18-year-old Nancy Drew in the summer after her high school graduation.
Launching a Nancy Drew TV series has been a priority for CBS TV Studios, which has the rights to the the classic Ya mystery books originally published by Stratemeyer Syndicate and later Simon & Schuster. The studio developed two Nancy Drew series over the past three years, Drew at CBS during the 2015-16 development season, which went to pilot starring Sarah Shahi and got close to a series order, and Nancy Drew at NBC this past season. Both incarnations, from writers Tony Phelan and Joan Rater and producer Dan Jinks, were conceived as sequels to the books, with an adult Nancy Drew at the center.

Jane Gloriana Villanueva's story will conclude on Jane the Virgin in 2019, but that might not be the end of the franchise.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, a spinoff of the series is in the works at The CW, and series star Gina Rodriguez will be playing a part behind the scenes if it goes to series.
Jane the Virgin showrunner, Jennie Snyder Urman and writer, Valentina Garza are also said to be working on the new series.
What's more, it will not air as a backdoor pilot during Jane the Virgin Season 5. The CW, in particular, has been known to air backdoor pilots of potential series to gauge the interest from viewers.

“Jane the Virgin” could be sticking around the CW — sort of.
Variety has learned that the network is developing a spinoff of the critically acclaimed series with original series writer and co-executive producer Valentina Garza onboard to write and executive produce the new project. Modeled after the previously successful Hispanic Film Project, the program is a direct response to the lack of diverse writers in primetime network TV. To take Nhmc TV Writers Program graduates to the next level, Nhmc has also created the Nhmc Pitching Lab and the Latino Scene Showcase.
Here is an in depth piece on Nhmc MediaCon published by LatinHeat

The Executive Producer Panel speakers are "Bordertown" (Fox) Supervising Producer Valentina Garza; Virgil Williams, Co-Executive Producer ("Criminal Minds"), Rashad Raifani, Executive Producer ("Allegiance") and will take inside the world of developing the show, producing and monetizing your project on the internet.

Updated: Animated series writers are protesting a decision by the Television Academy to allow NBC’s Community to compete for Emmys in animated categories, arguing that they should be allowed similar cross-genre privileges.
Community made it onto the Emmy nomination ballot in several categories, including best animated program — along with 33 entries from full-time animated shows. The episode, “Digital Estate Planning,” features the cast rendered into 8-bit characters to compete in an old-school-style video game.
Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy), David X. Cohen (Futurama) and Al Jean (The Simpsons) are among the 52 writer-producers who signed a letter to the TV Academy arguing...
