Dan Redfeld
- Composer
Dan Redfeld is a classically trained composer, conductor, orchestrator and pianist. His formal training began at Boston's New England Conservatory of Music before transferring to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he received his degree in composition with an emphasis in conducting.
In 2001, "Little Women - An American Musical," with music by Redfeld, lyrics by Christina Harding and John Koladziei, and a book by Steven Ganci and Ralph Lucas, was workshopped both in Los Angeles with Teri Ralston, Brian Evers and Gordon Goodman, and in New York with Elaine Stritch and Debbie Gibson (Deborah Gibson). More recently, Dan has a new untitled musical with Koladziej and Harding, soon to be announced.
In October of 2010, Redfeld conducted the premier of his song cycle, "A Hopeful Place for Soprano and Orchestra," with text by John Koladziej. The piece was written for soprano Kristi Holden (Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera") and was recorded in August of 2011 with Holden, an all-star Los Angeles studio orchestra and Redfeld as conductor and producer. It is scheduled to be released in the spring of 2015.
Recent concert works include "Fanfare and Theme" for large orchestra; "January 15, 1947" for solo harp, which won Third Place in the American Harp Society Composition Competition; and "Travels for Piano Quartet." His "Arioso for Oboe, Percussion & Strings" will receive its world premiere in May 2015 with the Santa Barbara Symphony and Maestro Nir Kabaretti.
Among Redfeld's catalog of film scores are the AFI-produced "Clinic E" and classic film noir "Moustache," which garnered him several awards. He has also composed scores for silent classics including "The Phantom of the Opera," "The Sheik," "Hell's Hinges," "The Black Pirate," "Safety Last," "The Adventures of Prince Achmed," "Varieté," "Asphalt," "The Covered Wagon," and "Robin Hood." In 2013, Redfeld participated in a five-city West Coast tour for the Library of Congress premiering his scores for the restored Mary Pickford classics, "Sparrows" and "Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall."
For Buysoundtrax Records, Redfeld arranged, orchestrated, conducted and produced the critically-acclaimed compilation, "Music from the Twilight Saga," as well as recordings of piano solo themes and songs from a wide array of film and television composers, most notably John Williams, John Barry and Jerry Goldsmith. In 2012, he completed work on "Titanic: An Epic Musical Voyage," an album commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Titanic disaster and the re-release of James Cameron's Academy Award-winning film. Upcoming BSX releases include "Schindler's List: The Film Music of John Williams," a chamber album slated for spring 2015, as well as a solo piano CD of John Williams' most famous themes the following October.
As musical director and conductor, Redfeld has worked on forty-plus musicals including "Disney's Beauty and the Beast," "The Who's Tommy," "Chess - the London Version," Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Song and Dance," "Evita," "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Miss Saigon," "Triumph of Love," "Blood Brothers," "A Chorus Line," "The Spitfire Grill," "Into the Woods," "Sweeney Todd," "The Secret Garden," "West Side Story," and the "Cabrillo Music Theatre 2010 Holiday Spectacular." In June of 2013, Redfeld was chosen as Assistant Music Director for "My Fair Lady in Concert," directed by Tony Award-nominee Marcia Milgrom Dodge.
