An Italian immigrant and anarchist who, with fellow Italian immigrant
Bartolomeo Vanzetti, was tried, convicted and executed for the murder of a guard during a payroll robbery. The case achieved notoriety because of the fact that there was no direct evidence connecting the pair to the robbery and the belief that the prosecution was trying them more for their political beliefs than for the robbery and murder--which, as it turned out, they hadn't committed.
