‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ Premiere Sets Records For Most-Watched Hulu Original
Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers has gotten off to a strong ratings start. As usual, no hard numbers are being released, but the high-profile limited series, starring Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy, was the most-watched Hulu original ever — drama, comedy, limited series or unscripted — on premiere day as well as after five days on the service. That includes all seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Act, and others.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 finale previously was the most watched Hulu original ever on premiere day, according to the streaming service.

Hulu’s methodology is based on counting individual users to accommodate different release patterns (Hulu released the first three episodes of Nine Perfect Strangers at once), so a viewer is counted once whether they watched one episode or all three.

Based on Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty’s latest book,Nine Perfect Strangers is from David E. Kelley, Bruna Papandrea’s Made Up Stories,

Stan bolsters local slate with range of new commissions

Stan bolsters local slate with range of new commissions
Stan has announced a slew of new local commissions as it ramps up ambitious plans to have around a third of its first-run slate come from original production.

These include Hoodlum Entertainment feature film Christmas on the Farm, Matchbox Pictures drama Bad Behaviour, and a number of projects with Roadshow Rough Diamond, with whom the Nine-owned streamer has extended its partnership. With the latter it is readying a third season of Bump and a spin-off, Year Of, as well as a Gregor Jordan-helmed crime drama, Ironside.

Last year, Stan flagged it intends to invest in more than 30 productions per year within five years, drawing on Nine’s production facilities and co-productions with international partners including Hollywood studios and international networks.

Earlier this month, the service announced a children’s feature film initiative with the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (Actf), and it has a lengthy list of upcoming local projects

‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ Review: Nicole Kidman’s Stagnant Hulu Series Is a Very Bad Vacation

‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ Review: Nicole Kidman’s Stagnant Hulu Series Is a Very Bad Vacation
The first shot of “Nine Perfect Strangers” is not, in fact, one of the titular strangers. Not one member of the starry ensemble is featured in the opening moments of Hulu’s limited series — not its Oscar-winning executive producer and star, nor either of its two-time Oscar nominees. Instead, all you see is fruit. Diced strawberries, a chopped banana, a few blueberries. They’re all sitting in a slowly churning blender, about to be puréed into gloppy, pink, mush.

Over the course of the first six episodes, audiences will become quite familiar with what it looks like to see vivid chunks of seedy snacks being diced into drinks. Watermelons, mangoes, raspberries — you name the fruit, it’s going to get liquefied. Considering the artful colors splashing around those violent blades, it’s hard to tell if series writer David E. Kelley has an unhealthy smoothie obsession or a frightening vendetta against fruit.

‘Nine Perfect Strangers’: Nicole Kidman Calls Hulu Drama “Trippy” & Reveals She Stayed In Character For Five Months – TCA
Nicole Kidman has admitted that she stayed in character as wellness resort director Masha for five months shooting Hulu limited drama series Nine Perfect Strangers.

During a TCA panel, she joked that she was “batshit crazy”, repeating a line from her character in the series, which is based on Liane Moriarty’s book.

“I’d only respond as Masha,” she said. “I wanted a very calm healing energy to emanate all the time so I remember going over to people and sort of putting my hand on their heart, holding their hand, they would talk to me or use my name Nicole when I would completely ignore them.”

“The only way I could actually relate to people was that way because I felt like otherwise I would be doing a performance and I didn’t want to feel that way,” she added.

Showtime’s ‘The End,’ a Dark Comedy From Australia, Can’t Quite Find Its Tone: TV Review

Showtime’s ‘The End,’ a Dark Comedy From Australia, Can’t Quite Find Its Tone: TV Review
“You’re trying to punish me. Surely the Southern Hemisphere is bad enough.”

So says Edie Henley (Harriet Walter) to her daughter Kate (Frances O’Connor) in the early scenes of the drama “The End.” This dark comedy created by Samantha Strauss comes to Showtime after a 2020 run in Australia; its first episode shows us how and why Edie, a widow, has been brought to Australia from her native England. She has only recently attempted suicide, and her new proximity to her daughter — as well as that daughter’s work in palliative medicine and adamant opposition to assisted suicide — would seem to provide grist for good drama.

The result is a bit mixed, though Walter (a recent standout on TV projects from “The Spanish Princess” to “Succession”) and O’Connor (credits including “The Missing) do good work. For a show intended to contemplate the end of life, the desire to expedite it,
