Mini Bio (1)
A recent university graduate, a newspaper editor, and a marketing consultant, Kurvers was vacationing in Hawaii when fate played its first card and his Vancouver marketing business literally went up in smoke. Returning to the rubble, Kurvers was faced with rebuilding his company or taking the opportunity to make a change in his career. The area around his office building was a favorite of Vancouver location managers and the personable Kurvers had spoken with many film crew members over the years. He learned enough about the film industry to decide that a career as a locations manager would be a great combination of his Business and Geography degrees.
Kurvers joined the Directors Guild of Canada as an Associate Member and took his place on the starting rung of the ladder. He worked as an on-set and office Production Assistant on television shows such as The X-Files and Stargate, and features including Mr. Magoo and Double Jeopardy.
He soon found that sweeping cigarette butts wasn't quite as stimulating as his former pursuits which included chairing newspapers's Board of Director meetings, organizing political campaigns and party policy conventions, and conducting Datum Business Geographics.
Planning to wrap up his foray into the film industry with a final P.A. stint on Frankenheimer's Reindeer Games, fate played its second card: The visual effects crew was mixing snow on the VFX unit when the Video Coordinator was called to the main unit by Frankenheimer, rendering the VFX unit inoperable without him. A fellow crew member knew Kurvers had a knack for technology (as a kid he would disassemble and reassemble computers just to see how they worked), and suggested to the Video Coordinator that he might be able to take over.
After a five-minute crash course on how to operate the equipment, Kurvers and successfully enabled the VFX unit to complete their day. Mark Indig, the very pleased producer, said to Kurvers, "You'll be directing by next week!" He remained with the video crew for the remainder of the shoot and a new branch in his career path was taken.
Kurvers, who throws hard work and determination into all his pursuits, worked numerous commercials to meet his union requirements, moved on to be the second unit Video Coordinator on Universal Picture's Head Over Heels, and was promoted to the position of main Video Coordinator on Tom Green's infamous release, Freddy Got Fingered.
In 2007 he became a Digital Imaging Technician. He has continued on ever since!
