- A leader in the field of Literary Agency Representation, Barry Perelman has been involved in the development and sale of scores of television and feature screenplays and has played a singular role in building and maintaining the careers of countless Writers, Directors and Producers. Barry's early career was spent in the intensely competitive world of the major agencies and since then, for nearly two decades, Barry has owned and operated the Barry Perelman Agency, active in all areas of film and television.
Barry was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois and attended nearby Lake Forest University and DePaul University Law School. Shortly thereafter, Barry made the move West and was accepted into the William Morris Agency Agent Trainee Program, long regarded as the premier "university" for the Entertainment Industry. After successfully completing the WMA program, he was given the chance to work at rival International Creative Management, where his career as a Literary Agent began in earnest.
At ICM, Barry was an agent in the Motion Pictures and Television Packaging Department, representing Writers, Directors and Producers while taking an active role in assembling studio and network projects with ICM clients. On the motion picture side, Barry was active in packaging such films as M*A*S*H, Mahogany, Target and The Billy Holiday Story. He also represented First Artist Productions, a production company founded and operated by Dustin Hoffman, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand. In television, Barry packaged such shows and telefilms as Columbo, The Rockford Files, Love American Style and Brian's Song. Barry negotiated Steven Spielberg's first contract with Universal Television, resulting in Duel, the highly acclaimed telefilm that launched the young Director's career.
From ICM, Barry moved to Eisenbach, Green & Duchow, an Independent Literary Agency where he could have more contact with his clients and a renewed ability to focus on building careers. It was here that Barry had producers involved with Magnum PI, Knots Landing, Simon & Simon, Quincy and Black Sheep Squadron. After having succeeded in both a major agency setting and in the Independent world, Barry decided that the time was right to own and operate his own agency.
The Barry Perelman Agency opened its doors in 1982 with Barry continuing to represent Writers, Directors and Producers for Film and Television. Since becoming his own boss, Barry has been involved in the packaging and sales of such films as Babes In Toyland, Smoke Belleu, The Amityville Horror franchise, Airbud and Airbud 2: Golden Retriever. In the area of television, Barry has packaged and represented Writers, Directors and Producers for series and telefilms such as Macgyver, Hunter, T.J. Hooker, Murder, She Wrote, Inside The Kgb, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Inspector Maigret (with Grenada Television in England), Robocop: The Series and F/X: the series, just to name a few.
