Review: ‘Nobody’s Fool’ is a Broad, Over-the-Top Misfire with Moments of Hilarity

Like Werner Herzog and Nicolas Cage working together in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Nobody’s Fool finally offers Tyler Perry and Tiffany Haddish a chance for two uninhibited talents of their craft to work together. It’s a different kind of madness, one with the kind of comic lack of restraint you’d expect–and it doesn’t always work.

The center of the story is Danica (Tika Sumpter), an ad executive who’s currently in an online relationship with an engineer who spends a lot of time on an offshore rig. Living in a glamorous apartment in New York City (shot against a green screen as clearly writer/director Perry takes liberties with just how long it takes to get from one point to another in Manhattan traffic), she lives a seemingly charmed life except when it comes to men. Lucky for her she’s chased

Box Office: ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to Break Free With $46 Million Debut
Bohemian Rhapsody” is heading for a rhapsodic debut from 4,000 North American locations with an estimated $46 million.

The Fox biopic starring Rami Malek as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury earned $18.4 million Friday. Bryan Singer directed the film from Anthony McCarten’s screenplay. Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, Joseph Mazzello, Aidan Gillen, Tom Hollander, and Mike Myers also star.

Bohemian Rhapsody” is sitting at a 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an A CinemaScore.

Christmastime pic “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” should debut in second with about $18 million from 3,766 domestic sites. That marks a disappointing start for the Disney film, which stars Keira Knightley and has an estimated production budget of well over $100 million.

Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston directed the film, with Ashleigh Powell writing the script. Mackenzie Foy, Eugenio Derbez, Matthew Macfadyen, Richard E. Grant, Misty Copeland, Helen Mirren, and Morgan Freeman also star. “Nutcracker” follows a young girl who must

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to Be the Box Office Champion With $43 Million

  • Variety
‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to Be the Box Office Champion With $43 Million
Consider “Bohemian Rhapsody” the box office Queen.

The Freddie Mercury biopic is set to open with a winning $43 million weekend at 4,000 North American locations, early estimates showed Friday.

The film, starring Rami Malek as Mercury, generated a solid $3.9 million in Thursday night previews, with exit polling showing 66% of theatergoers rating “Bohemian Rhapsody” as “excellent.” It’s outperforming expectations that had been around $35 million. It’s garnered mixed reviews, sitting at a 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, but critics have praised Malek’s performance as the Queen frontman during the 1970s and ’80s.

Disney’s family-friendly “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is debuting in second place with about $19 million at 3,766, slightly below the lower end of estimates of around $20 million to $25 million. The movie, adapted from the ballet classic about a young girl whose Nutcracker doll comes to life, is a rare stumble for Disney in that it carries a $125 million price tag.

‘Nobody’s Fool’ Film Review: Tyler Perry Makes Tiffany Haddish Do All the Work

‘Nobody’s Fool’ Film Review: Tyler Perry Makes Tiffany Haddish Do All the Work
Tyler Perry loves to torture rich characters and female characters who put career over love and family, so just one look at the New York apartment of rising ad exec Danica in “Nobody’s Fool” makes it apparent that the writer-director has put two targets on her back.

Her high-rise two-bedroom has the kind of Manhattan square footage usually reserved exclusively for oil sheiks and media heiresses, and it’s furnished with the soullessness of a Wayfair.com commercial. It also boasts the phoniest skyscraper views this side of “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” although the latter film made them obviously fake on purpose.

I mention the apartment because it makes no sense, which makes it the perfect avatar for “Nobody’s Fool,” a comedy that, even by Tyler Perry’s notoriously lax standards, has very little internal logic or narrative drive. The movie is ostensibly the

Box Office: ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Scores $3.9 Million on Thursday

  • Variety
Fox’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” rocked to an impressive $3.9 million at 3,260 North American locations on Thursday night.

Exit polling showed that 66% of theatergoers rated “Bohemian Rhapsody” as “excellent,” with another 24% calling it “very good.”

The Queen biopic, starring Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, expands to 4,000 locations on Friday amid expectations that it will easily top the box office with at least $35 million this weekend. Reviews have been critical (the film holds a 60% Rotten Tomatoes score), while praising Malek’s performance as the frontman of the popular rock band during the 1970s and ’80s.

The production of “Bohemian Rhapsody” was temporarily halted last year due to director Bryan Singer’s repeated absences. Singer was fired toward the end of the shoot, though he will still retain sole directing credit, and replaced by Dexter Fletcher. “Rhapsody” is produced by Graham King and New Regency.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Drums Up $3.9 Million at Thursday Box Office
Rami Malek and Fox hit a high note with “Bohemian Rhapsody,” drawing $3.9 million in Thursday night showings as it stays on track for a $40 million box office bow.

For comparison, Warner Bros.’s critical and commercial hit “A Star is Born” earned $3.2 million in early Thursday showings on its way to a $42.9 million opening weekend. “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” hit theaters with $3.4 million in early previews, pulling in $35.0 million in its first weekend for Universal. Independent trackers are looking for “Bohemian Rhapsody” to open to the tune of $35-$40 million.

Bohemian Rhapsody” has been heavily criticized for its series of events and its effectiveness as a biopic for Queen front-man Freddie Mercury.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Hits A High Note On Thursday Night With $3.9M Previews

  • Deadline
‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Hits A High Note On Thursday Night With $3.9M Previews
20th Century Fox/New Regency/Gk Film’s Bohemian Rhapsody struck a chord last night to the tune of $3.9M in Thursday night previews that began at 7Pm.

Compared to other musical-themed features of late, Bohemian Rhapsody bested Universal’s Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again which made $3.4M on its Thursday before a $14.2M Friday, and $34.95M opening back in July. The Graham King-produced movie about Queen also came in higher than Warner Bros.A Star Is Born which posted $3.2M in its Thursday night previews not counting its Wednesday sneaks cash which in total was $4.55M. That led to a $15.6M Friday and $42.9M opening weekend last month. Tracking has Bohemian Rhapsody in mid $30M opening range at 4,000 theaters, but many won’t be surprised if the Freddie Mercury biopic rocks past $40M given its multi-generational appeal.

Film Review: Tiffany Haddish in ‘Nobody’s Fool’

  • Variety
Film Review: Tiffany Haddish in ‘Nobody’s Fool’
It’s probably no coincidence that Tyler Perry chose this week, just days before the release of his latest film, “Nobody’s Fool,” to make the announcement that he is planning to retire Madea, the rowdy, blaring, acid-tongued, tiny-pistol-toting church lady from hell who will dress down anyone under the Atlanta sun who crosses her. The madly exuberant matriarch, who will be making her final screen appearance in 2019, has always been the spark plug — the anarchic TNT — of Perry’s comedies. And that makes you wonder: Will he now be looking for surrogate performers to replace that energy?

Of course he will — and, in fact, he has already found one. In “Nobody’s Fool,” Tiffany Haddish, with her unchecked rage and triumphant lewd abandon, plays the first Tyler Perry character who could stand glare to glare, threat to threat, uncorked insult-from-the-hood to uncorked insult-from-the-hood to Perry’s gale-force grandma in drag.

Will ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Rock the Box Office?

  • Variety
Alexa, play “We Are the Champions.”

Fox’s Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” starring Rami Malek is expected to rock the box office with a debut over $35 million when it arrives in 4,000 theaters this weekend. That should easily be enough to best newcomers “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” and “Nobody’s Fool.”

It doesn’t look like the messy turmoil behind the camera has tainted anticipation for the film. Director Bryan Singer’s repeated absence from set caused Fox to temporarily halt production. Dexter Fletcher replaced Singer after he was fired toward the end of the shoot, though Singer will still retain sole directing credit. The biographical musical, co-produced by New Regency, is already off to a solid start overseas. It launched in the United Kingdom last weekend with a huge $12.2 million, ranking as one of the best debuts in that territory.

Set during the early 1970s, “Bohemian Rhapsody” chronicles

Moviegoers Do The Fandango As ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Bests ‘A Star Is Born’ In Presales; Freddie Mercury Biopic Eyes $40M Start

  • Deadline
Don’t underestimate the power of 20th Century Fox/New Regency/Gk Films’ Bohemian Rhapsody this weekend.

The appeal for the band Queen is multi-generational, and doesn’t just pertain to the original hippie-turned-yuppie fans of the 1970s and 1980s, but extends to the core fans’ sons and daughters, and ultimately, yes, their grandchildren. Talk about demand: Exhibitors have been ringing up Fox for extra screens, and we hear Bohemian Rhapsody is now looking at a footprint of 4,000 theaters or more.

So it comes as no surprise to hear that Bohemian Rhapsody is already Fandango’s highest advance-ticket seller of the year for a movie musical, besting Warner Bros/Live Nation’s A Star Is Born and Universal’s Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again at the same time in their sales cycle. Conservative expectations are that Bohemian Rhapsody opens to $35 million, but it’s a no-brainer if it sails past $40M per industry sources.

A Final Red Band Trailer for 'Nobody's Fool' with Haddish & Sumpter

"Best way to get over a man, is to get up under a new one." Paramount has released a final red band trailer for Nobody's Fool, the new comedy from filmmaker Tyler Perry, which is just a bit different than his Madea films in the past. This wacky movie stars two of the most popular actresses - Tiffany Haddish and Tika Sumpter - as sisters. Tanya (Haddish) is released from prison and moves in with her sister Danica (Sumpter), who discovers she is in an online relationship with a man that may be "catfishing" her. The full cast includes Whoopi Goldberg, Missi Pyle, Courtney Henggeler, Omari Hardwick, Amber Riley, and Crystal Lee Brown. The first trailer didn't look that great, and this one looks even worse, despite the "dirty" humor that they're allowed to include in this red band trailer. Just not my knid of comedy. Have fun. Here's the
