November wound up covering a lot of ground. We dipped a toe into pre-Code territory with Albert Ray’s 1932 title The Thirteenth Guest (listen), stayed at “Aaron’s” cabin in Creep 2 (listen), and got our hair done with Jill Gevargizian’s 2020 film The Stylist (listen).
Now we’re talking about gay screenwriter Devon Graye and director Adam Randall‘s under seen and under rated thriller I See You (2019).
In the film, police detective Greg (Jon Tenney) is struggling with his wife Jackie (Helen Hunt)’s infidelity as he works a new case with partner Spitzky (Gregory Alan Williams). The case is a child abduction that bears a striking similarity to events from 15 years ago. As Greg and Jackie’s teenage son Conor (Judah Lewis) blames his mother, strange events begin occurring around the house.

“Slow Horses” is Apple TV+’s Clydesdale. The streaming service has given the Gary Oldman-led spy drama an early Season 6 renewal, which means the reliable workhorse of a show is likely to become Apple TV+’s first series to run for more than five seasons. The announcement comes just after the conclusion of Season 4 on October 9. Apple announced the Season 5 pickup back in January.
Technically, “For All Mankind,” one of Apple TV+’s launch titles in 2019, has been running for longer than “Slow Horses,” which premiered in 2022. Both shows have released four seasons, and “For All Mankind’s” fifth (and a spinoff) is in the works. But “Slow Horses” is an anomaly in the streaming industry because it moves really fast. Previous seasons of “Slow Horses” have shot back-to-back, which reduces the amount of time the show takes between seasons. Two six-episode seasons were released in 2022, and the show...

Apple has handed out an early season six renewal for Slow Horses, the comedic spy drama starring Gary Oldman.
The news comes on the heels of the season four finale that released Oct. 9 on Apple TV+, and a season five renewal announced early this year.
The forthcoming fifth season, following the season four ending, will see the Slow Horses on the run as Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) embroils them all in a fatally high-stakes game of retaliation and revenge.
Slow Horses, based on the Slough House series of novels by Mick Herron, follows a dysfunctional team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 known un-affectionately as Slough House. The ensemble cast also includes Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Rosalind Eleazar, Christopher Chung, Samuel West, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Ruth Bradley, Tom Brooke, Joanna Scanlan and Jonathan Pryce. Hugo Weaving joined the cast as an antagonist in season four.

Spoiler Alert: The following story contains plot details from “Hello Goodbye,” the Season 4 finale of “Slow Horses.”
“Slow Horses” is not, as a rule, a sentimental show. Deceptively disheveled spymaster Jackson Lamb’s (Gary Oldman) idea of caring for his “joes” is to negotiate up their active-duty death settlement on a bureaucratic technicality. Yet the Emmy-winning Apple show’s fourth season, which concluded on Wednesday, was its most personal yet. River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) — a former MI5 golden boy whose exile to the series’ namesake box of broken toys established the show’s premise in Season 1 — began his latest misadventure by trying to save his dementia-afflicted grandfather David (Jonathan Pryce) — and ended it by coming face-to-face with his father, a sociopathic American mercenary named Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving).
“What I love about Series 4 is that personal story,” says creator and showrunner Will Smith (not that one!), a comedian and frequent collaborator of Armando Iannucci.

AppleTV+’s darkly comedic espionage thriller Slow Horses, starring Gary Oldman, has been renewed for season 5. More here:
More great telly is on the horizon. AppleTV+’s awards juggernaut Slow Horses has been renewed for a fifth season, even though it only just wrapped up season three.
Slow Horses, which is based on Mick Herron’s series of novels, follows Slough House, a division of MI5 filled with agents who have, one way or another, messed up their career prospects and are mostly confined to their desks. Yet, somehow this ragtag group of British heroes seem to find themselves in the middle of some pretty spectacular schemes.
Gary Oldman headlines the series as Jackson Lamb, the curmudgeon boss of Slough House and he is joined by the likes of Jack Lowden, Kristin Scott Thomas and Olivia Cooke in the cast. Oldman was recently recognised by the Golden Globes for his...

Lovecraft may have argued that the strongest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown, but there’s no denying the intellectual thrills of unraveling a good old-fashioned mystery. After all, some answers can serve to make a story even scarier, and I have a personal soft spot for horror yarns about grizzled investigators attempting to piece together a morbid puzzle.
This is precisely why I’ve been a fan of the Saw franchise from the very beginning, with the detective angle behind all the blood and guts making this gruesome franchise stand out amongst other so-called “torture-porn” movies.
And with the long-anticipated Saw X on the horizon this week, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six of the best investigative horror films ahead of Jigsaw’s latest killing spree. After all, sometimes it’s fun to figure out exactly why our protagonists are going...

Drum & Lace, aka Sofia degli Alessandri-Hultquist, is an artist and composer from Florence, Italy. Her music has been described as being genre-fluid and having a “chameleon-like nature” (A Closer Listen), melding together sampled field recordings, lush layers of synths, chamber instruments and electronic beats. She draws inspiration from film music, music concrete and nature to create textural electronica, often blending unlikely sounds with one another.
Her feature-length film scoring credits include Netflix film “Night Teeth” (directed by Adam Randall), campy-thriller “Deadly Illusions”, They/Them (directed by John Logan) and the just released Red, White & Royal Blue. Television credits include AppleTV+ Original Series Dickinson (created by Alena Smith), seasons 3 and 4 of NBC Good Girls (created by Jenna Bans & Bill Krebs) and I Know What You Did Last Summer (created by Sara Goodman) for Amazon Prime Video.

It's a story we see all the time. A quiet and quaint lakeside town. A family from that town maintaining appearances in public but breaking down in private. A series of vicious crimes that even the town's seasoned detectives have a hard time wrapping their heads around. Ultimately, a darkness emerges from the picture-perfect facade and swallows it whole.
So it goes in Adam Randall's 2019 film "I See You." It is something of a mystery movie, a thriller that draws anxiety and suspense from the question of what is lurking beneath the surface of what you're seeing. Even though the small town with hidden crimes setup is familiar, the story goes in wild directions that keep the viewer from ever feeling truly grounded.
What makes the movie different from that setup is the vast array of plot reversals; the way moments take on new meaning when viewed from a...

"I See You" defies expectations. What begins as a typical crime thriller mutates into something more intricate and profound. Devon Graye penned the script, blending together social commentary on child abuse, infidelity, police corruption, and homelessness. At the heart of the film is the concept of phrogging -- when a person or persons secretly squat inside someone else's home. Director Adam Randall elevates the film with long static shots, emotional character close-ups, and methodical dolly glides. The camera work here takes on a life all its own. But let's not forget the film's chill-inducing score, courtesy of composer William Arcane, which punctuates the film's vital and mouth-dropping moments.
Initially, "I See You" arrived in theaters in late 2019 and grossed just over $1 million at the box office. But when the film hit Netflix, it went viral -- scoring top slots in the streamer's daily Top 10 list. As we revisit this harrowing movie,...

The former Blood List entry follows a rebellious teenage girl who is sent to stay with her grandmother in a sleepy town whose quirky traditions include a curfew banning anyone from going out at night. When the girl ventures out after dark she discovers the murky truth behind the town’s mysterious history.
Randall told us: “This is a fun monster movie that harks back to Amblin movies of yore. There is an intriguing conflict between the teenage girl and the older generations but it also has the thrills and action of a monster movie. It’s a great script.”
Script comes from Isa Mazzei (Cam). Jaki Bradley and Kevin Armento did previous revisions. Dick Grunert wrote the original spec that made it onto the 2017 Blood List.

“Night Teeth” never met a long-winded piece of exposition it didn’t love. As its neon-colored opening credits slip by, star Debby Ryan’s narration introduces the audience to a secret world of vampires. They are very real, she says, with a long-held, tenuous truce between the bloodsuckers and the humans keeping the bad stuff at bay. Most stories, books, films, and TV shows get the details wrong.
And then she goes on, and on: Her early promise to tell a new story becomes an excuse to unspool the many (many) rules that dictate this world. Vampires can’t let humans know they exist; they can’t feast on anyone unwilling; and they can never set foot in the East LA neighborhood of Boyle Heights.
What should be a fun addition to the vampire lore becomes mired in murky dissertations, nonsensical character twists, and a worrying lack of understanding of...

I'll never get tired of vampire movies and I'm very excited for Adam Randall's Night Teeth, coming to Netflix on October 20th! Here's a look at the first trailer:
