Matt Coulter was born on September 21, 1957 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He later moved to Huntsville, Alabama with his parents, older brother, Kevin and younger sister, Pam. He graduated from Huntsville High School and then went to University of Alabama where he obtained a Bachelor's in broadcast journalism.

He got his start in broadcasting when he was 14, announcing high school baseball games. He continued to get jobs as announcing baseball, football and basketball games. He enrolled at University of Alabama and spent his Christmases working as a radio announcer for various radio jobs until he graduated in 1975. Coulter worked as a sports anchor for local TV news station, NBC 13 for several years until he was offered as a sports broadcast announcer for WJOX 690AM and had been working there loyally for over a decade.

He has served as play-by-play broadcaster for the World Football League's Birmingham Fire and the Canadian Football League's Birmingham Barracudas.

Coulter gave also color commentary, and periodically substituted as play-by-play analyst for both basketball and football at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He was offered a position after he was not chosen to succeed Gary Sanders as play-by-play broadcaster for UAB, whom he'd been the color analyst with for eight previous years. So he was offered a broadcasting position at Jacksonville State University in the summer of 2006.

Later that fall, he was announcing at NASCAR at Talladega, Alabama while the movie, "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" was being filmed. He was asked for permission to his voice for announcing parts of the movie, but the director liked Coulter so much that he expanded his role into an actual appearance.

Coulter also had a small, uncredited role in the movie "Cobb" with Tommy Lee Jones. He has interviewed hundreds of sports figures and athletes and has gained respect throughout the community as a charismatic and respected interviewer.

He has been working with Concept, Inc., a marketing company for the past few year and is the spearhead behind Championship Chicken.

Matt was married for over 20 years before filing for divorce for irreconcilable differences in 2007. He has three children (Jennifer, Madison and Matt, Jr) and is now a proud grandfather.
