DVD Review – Dark Exorcism (2015)

Dark Exorcism, 2015.

Written and Directed by David Spaltro.

Starring Grace Folsom, Lynn Justinger, Fiona Horrigan, Catherine Cobb Ryan and Kayla Leasure.

Synopsis:

A sceptical grad student and a renowned paranormal specialist investigate a potentially haunted home and the troubled woman inside whose affliction may be beyond the capacity of either of them.

It is however, a difficult topic to do justice to. On one hand you have The Shining or Burnt Offerings showing the true psychological horror of possession. On the other you might have REC3 or worse, something like The Devil Inside or the worst excesses of the Paranormal Activity franchise.

Movie Review – In The Dark (2015)

In The Dark, 2015.

Written and Directed by David Spaltro.

Starring Grace Folsom, Lynn Justinger, Fiona Horrigan, Catherine Cobb Ryan and Kayla Leasure.

Synopsis:

A skeptical grad student and a renowned paranormal specialist investigate a potentially haunted home and the troubled woman inside whose affliction may be beyond the capacity of either of them.

While the best of horror is held in high esteem, the genre is often disregarded as the black sheep of Hollywood. For every Halloween or The Shining, there are countless Vampire Hookers and Killer Klowns from Outer Space… these are real movies by the way and no, that wasn’t a typo.

Aside from cult classics such as The Blair Witch Project, indie horror doesn’t hold the best track record, which is why it’s surprising that director David Spaltro chose to tackle the genre for his third feature, following the indie dramas Things I Don’t Understand and …Around.

Like Spaltro's earlier films, this is also set in modern day New York. The story concerns Bethany (Grace Folsom), a talented young artist who starts having strange experiences after her father's passing. Her distressed mother (Catherine Cobb Ryan) seeks help from Professor Kearne (Fiona Horrigan), an experienced and renowned specialist in paranormal activities. Together with sceptical grad student Veronica (Lynn Justinger), Kearne visits the house that appears haunted and the pair soon finds themselves coming face-to-face with forces that are much stronger and much more evil than they would ever imagine. It is clear that the script (also by Spaltro) was written following some detailed...
