Movie Review – Oscar Nominated Short Films 2018: Live Action

Oscar Nominated Short Films 2018: Live Action, 2018.

DeKalb Elementary

Directed by Reed Van Dyk.

Starring Tara Riggs and Bo Mitchell.

Based on an actual 911 call made to an Atlanta, Georgia high school, DeKalb Elementary is a taut, gut-wrenching thriller revolving around a mentally ill, machine gun-totting young man (Mitchell) and the quick-thinking secretary (Riggs) who attempts to talk him out of shooting up the school.

Reed Van Dyk’s sharp direction milks the scenario for maximum intensity, but it’s ultimately the two central performances that really sell this one; Riggs’ turn as an uncommonly understanding and compassionate person, even in such trying circumstances, is totally transfixing from start to finish.

Ultimately, you’ll probably be left feeling for everyone involved, even the shooter himself, with basic humanity and decency prevailing above all else.

‘Smothered’ Review

Stars: Brea Grant, Kane Hodder, Bill Moseley, Don Shanks, R.A Mihailoff, Michael Berryman, John Kassir, Dane Rhodes, Shanna Forrestall, John Schneider, Adria Tennor, Andrew Bowen, Amy Brassette | Written and Directed by John Schneider

Horror comedy Smothered is written and directed by actor turned director John Schneider. Yes, you did read that correctly… Actor John Schneider, who many will know from family-friendly productions and his roles as Bo Duke on Dukes of Hazzard and more recently Jonathan Kent, aka Superman’s dad, on Smallville, has turned his hand to writing and directing in more recent years but who knew he had a penchant for penning horror? Admittedly he has had roles in low-budget monster movies such as Super Shark, Snow Beast and Lake Placid 2 but I had no idea he was such a horror fan – he certainly has to be to create such a love letter to the horror community as Smothered.

Get Smothered By This New Trailer

From the Press Release

When John R. Schneider wrote Smothered, he wrote a reverse of the classic horror film model. Instead of a bunch of college-aged girls getting slaughtered by men in masks, his film features men of the mask getting slaughtered by a beautiful young vixen.

And, in a turn that will leave horror fans titillated, the film features a list of horror icons playing “themselves” in this “horroromedy” (horror/comedy) film with more humanity than you’d expect from a film where almost everyone dies.
