Few people have been around the Digimon franchise as long as Hiromi Seki. A producer at Toei Animation, she’s been involved with Digimon since 1999’s Digimon Adventure and has seen it evolve through many series and generations of both fans and characters. I was able to interview her at the 2024 New York Comic-Con where we talked about the early days of the digital monsters, the reason why the characters continue to resonate with fans, and even got a glimpse into the difference between producing a Digimon series and a Digimon film. Thank you so much for participating in this interview. Could you begin by introducing yourself and telling us a little bit about your relationship with the Digimon series. Hiromi Seki : I’ve been the producer at Toei Animation at the planning and sales department for about 40 years now. And when it comes to the Digimon series, I...

FX is heading back to Oklahoma. The network has picked up a drama pilot from creator Sterlin Harjo (“Reservation Dogs”) and star Ethan Hawke to series, Variety first reported and Gold Derby can confirm.
The series’ plot details are being kept under wraps, but it’s described as “a Tulsa noir about a guy (Hawke) who knows too much.” It’s a reunion of sorts for Harjo and Hawke, as the latter guest-starred in the second-to-last episode of Harjo’s FX comedy series “Reservation Dogs.” Harjo created the new series and directed the pilot and will serve as executive producer. Hawke will also serve as executive producer. Garrett Basch (“Reservation Dogs”) is also an EP.
The pilot, which was ordered in February with the working title “The Sensitive Kind,” filmed in Oklahoma in April and May. The pilot’s cast includes Keith David, Siena East, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tim Blake Nelson,...

“Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio” is a collection of close to 500 Chinese stories written by Pu Song Ling of the Qing dynasty. These fictional tales mostly touch on the themes of rebirth, reincarnation, ghosts, gods and the supernatural. Many filmmakers have adapted numerous of his works into films and TV series since then. Loosely based on a story of the same name and filmed in China, King Hu‘s “Painted Skin” was also his last film.

Emmy nominee D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai (Reservation Dogs) has joined the cast of Darren Aronofsky’s crime thriller Caught Stealing from Sony Pictures, Deadline has confirmed.
Caught Stealing follows Hank Thompson (Austin Butler), a burned-out former baseball player, as he’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of ’90s NYC. We hear Woon-a-Tai will play the role of Dale, Hank’s best friend since high school.
In March, Deadline exclusively revealed the project, based on the books by Charlie Huston, was in the works, with Butler set as the lead and Aronofsky as director. Huston penned the screenplay with Aronofsky’s Protozoa producing.
In addition to Butler, Woon-a-Tai joins the previously announced cast of Vincent D’Onofrio, Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Will Brill, Bad Bunny and Griffin Dunne.
Woon-a-Tai is a 22-year-old Oji-Cree First Nations coming off a busy Emmy season.

“I, the Executioner,” Ryoo Seung-wan’s sequel to his 2015 action-comedy “Veteran,” scales back on its predecessor’s laughs in order to focus more closely on — as well as to examine — the violence of its police protagonists. Although undoubtedly entertaining, Ryoo’s follow-up is also highly introspective, weaving a serial killer mystery that makes for a surprising mirror to the series’ lead.
Roguish detective Seo Do-cheol (Hwang Jung-min) returns in a dynamic blast of an opening salvo, as the camera weaves in and out of (and above) an illicit casino, as a police sting operation unfolds. Amusing action soon ensues, reminiscent of the first film’s zesty, high-impact sequences, and with its central conceit in tow: Seo and his returning, idiosyncratic team are either hyper-competent or bumbling fools, depending on what the script demands. Sometimes, they’re both these things at once, as the film’s prologue provides a dose of the familiar.

If you missed the Emmy red carpet, you might not have known that Reservation Dogs star D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai arrived with an important symbol on his face. However, during the opening by Eugene and Dan Levy, the camera panned to the actor as the father-son duo cracked a joke about the Television Academy "discovering" a well beloved comedy series that's being honored for the first time in the acting and series categories this year despite being critically-acclaimed since its freshman season.
Woon-a-Tai is up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance as Bear Smallhill and he's using the moment to shine light on a very serious cause. The red handprint across his mouth represents solidarity with Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women whose stories are not often told and who are largely ignored by the media and law enforcement.

D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai took to the 2024 Emmys red carpet on Sunday with a powerful symbolic message.
The Reservation Dogs star painted a red handprint over his mouth to stand in solidarity with missing and murdered Indigenous women. According to the organization Native Hope, it’s a symbol of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (Mmiw) movement and stands for “all the missing sisters whose voices are not heard” and “the silence of the media and law enforcement in the midst of this crisis.”

The biggest strength of 5.7 Seconds has to be its story. Director duo Tim Aslin and Shane Cibella’s short film is mostly confined to the inside of a car. It begins with a woman hurriedly getting into a car. She’s clearly trying to hide from the outside, which implies something terrible out there. Inside the car, she finds a man in the backseat. He appears to be all nice and normal. But she is skeptical. She’s injured and bleeding, but when he offers to help, she refuses. He tries to assure her that she has absolutely nothing to fear, and just like her, he’s also hiding (from whatever is out there) inside the car. But she still doesn’t want to believe it. In fact, she still thinks he’s one of them. Now if I told you who she’s referring to as “them,” it would be a major spoiler,...

Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd) has revealed a first-look deal with industry veteran Jack Nguyen, with a Korean remake of the 2015 comedy-drama “The Intern” set as the inaugural project. The agreement, made through Nguyen’s Joat Films, focuses on Asia-centric film projects, particularly local-language remakes of Wbd’s English-language titles.
Nguyen will collaborate with local partners across the Asia-Pacific region, including Korea and India. Kurt Rieder, senior VP, head of theatrical distribution, Apac, Wbd, highlighted the strong appetite for Hollywood story remakes in the region.
A former 30-year Warner Bros. executive, Nguyen previously supervised local language activities in Asia and Latin America. His career includes overseeing productions such as “Letters from Iwo Jima,” the “Rurouni Kenshin” franchise and “The Age of Shadows.”
Nguyen said: “It should come as no surprise that I have a great deal of respect and loyalty to Warner Bros. after spending the majority of my career there.

The second Emmys of 2024 is sure to set records. With multiple first-time nominees, groundbreaking recognition for Indigenous performers and an actual good mix of shows, the nominations cast a wide net. Below, Variety breaks down the contenders in most of the main categories.
Drama Series
The drama category is one of the most peculiar in this year’s Emmy competition. “The Crown” is the only series nominated last year, while the rest are either new shows or shows finally getting their due. In fact, “The Crown” — which took home this trophy in 2021 — was probably the front-runner until FX decided freshman hit “Shōgun” would not be a limited series. Other newcomers this year: Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “Fallout,” plus Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” for their freshman seasons; these choices demonstrate that the TV Academy isn’t focusing on one type of drama. Brazil’s thriving animation scene has been on display around the world over the past year, with titles teasing, screening and winning awards at major international events such as Palm Springs, Annecy, San Sebastian and the Quirino Awards.
At this year’s MIFA, the world’s most important animation industry get-together, a São Paulo Animation Showcase highlighted a batch of projects from São Paulo’s leading animation studios. The event was a collaboration between BrC (Brazilian Content), Spcine – the city of São Paulo’s film-tv body – and the Annecy-based market.
Service industries, such as animation, require hives of talent to cross-pollinate through the many studios based in the city. Attendees pointed to a strong base of experienced producers, animators, and support staff, many boasting 15 to 20 years of experience. Spoilers for "Deadpool & Wolverine" to follow.
In "Deadpool & Wolverine," Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) learns from the Time Variance Authority (Tva) that his universe is dying. This is mostly because Marvel Studios parent company Disney bought 20th Century Fox (home of the "X-Men" movie franchise since Marvel Comics sold off the rights in the 1990s). It's also, though, because in 2017's "Logan," Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) died.
The "X-Men" franchise made Logan its star and did not do a good job getting the audience hooked on the other characters. So, without Logan, the sustaining-interest in the setting is gone. It's typical "Deadpool" metatext, especially since with this film, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is bringing Jackman back as Logan to renew interest in itself.
After getting the news his universe is due for a pruning, Deadpool begins hopping across the multiverse. He thinks if he can find a Wolverine to fill his world's Logan-shaped hole,...

It’s the day after the Emmy nominations, and a few things are clear in the light of Thursday – namely, lots of deja-vu and lots of concentrating the wealth in precious few places. As is often the case with the TV academy, when they like you they really like you, and when they don’t like you, they completely ignore you. It’s good for your show to be on Netflix, FX, HBO, Apple and Hulu, less good on Paramount+ and Showtime. So much original content, so little time.

FX’s breakthrough — and thoroughly unique — comedy Reservation Dogs struggled for three seasons to find an audience before creators Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi decided to end the series in 2023.
Fortunately, the series got its due Wednesday; the single-camera comedy that follows the exploits of Elora Danan (Devery Jacobs), Bear Smallhill (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) and Cheese (Lane Factor) in rural Oklahoma earned its first-ever nomination in the best comedy category while star Woon-a-Tai nabbed one for best actor in a comedy.

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is set for release on February 14, 2025, marking one of the initial films of the MCU’s Phase Five. Anthony Mackie takes on the role of the new Captain America, succeeding Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, albeit with a twist that will unfold in the movie.
Amidst a blend of familiar and fresh faces joining Mackie, one character has particularly piqued fan interest, especially following their prominent appearance in the recently unveiled trailer.
The character in focus is Thaddeus Ross, familiar to MCU audiences, who is confirmed in the movie to transform into the Red Hulk. Amid concerns of potential underperformance for ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, some fans believe that Red Hulk could be the film’s saving grace!

For those of us who have been here for a decade or two, it’s remarkable to consider both how much and how little the city of Los Angeles has changed over the years. There are still plenty of the old landmarks—the Hollywood Sign, Pink’s Hot Dogs, that dude who rollerblades around is white robes and plays guitar on the Venice boardwalk—while other, seemingly indestructible, institutions have tragically bitten the dust.
So! With local issues perpetually at the forefront of our mind this week, here now are ten films that remind us of life in Los Angeles during a very particular and only recently bygone era: the ’90s and early 2000s. These films are honest portrayals of what livin’ la vida loca LA-style is all about, whether they’re a glimpse into the lifestyles of the rich and famous, the realities of showbiz or struggles within SoCal’s toughest ‘hoods.

But after the conclusion of season 46 came and went earlier this week with seemingly no Sia prize handed out, Survivor host Jeff Probst confirmed that the singer has decided to stop awarding her own “Sia Prize.”

The Sia Prize has become a familiar post-season award to fun players from each Survivor cast.
Singer Sia had given out cash prizes to the players she most enjoyed watching each season.
Sia enjoyed rewarding several players each season, with recent winners including Kaleb Gebrewold, Jake O’Kane, Carolyn Wiger, Carson Garrett, and Elaine Stott.
Players had been getting up to $100,000 for being her favorite player in a season or $15,000 for being entertaining. And she did this for eight years.
Sia is one of the biggest Survivor fans out there, and the players getting her prize would usually get invited to meet and party with her.
But it is the end of an era, as it has been announced that Sia is done with the prizes and that nobody from the Survivor 46 cast will get one.

The 2023 Taiwanese film Miss Shampoo really feels like it’s from some other time. It’s not simply goofy but absurd as well. It’s so goofy that it almost borders on being meaningless, but somehow there is a through line to the plot, and the characters exist well within the boundaries the makers crafted for them. Miss Shampoo is that film where if one gets an ‘in’ into the film somehow, there is a healthy chance that one will enjoy it no matter what. But if that doesn’t happen, the film might seem like a sequence of over-the-top scenes that have nothing to say. The film has to be seen as a love story, and underneath the absurd yet sentimental plot there is the groundedness of the archetype of Beauty and the Beast, but as the film is a comedy, they have been bashed around to fit this hyper-goofy dramedy.
