The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”

Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.

TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) announced winners of its 11th annual awards on Saturday, with Amazon MGM Studios’ Saltburn taking home two Muahs Awards for best contemporary make-up and best contemporary hair styling. Netflix’s Maestro also picked up a pair of honors for best period and/or character make-up and best special make-up effects.

Warner Bros.’ Barbie also won in the feature film categories, taking the prize for best period and/or character hair styling.

Winners in the television categories include Netflix’s The Crown, HBO’s The Last of Us, Apple TV+’s The Morning Show and Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. ABC’s Dancing With the Stars won three awards for best contemporary make-up, best contemporary hair styling and best period and/or character hair styling. NBC’s Saturday Night Live won two awards for best period and/or character make-up and best special make-up effects.

The guild held its 11th annual awards ceremony Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The night kicked off with the honoree awards being presented. Oscar-nominated actor Annette Bening was honored with the Distinguished Artisan award. However, due to Covid, Diana Nyad accepted the award on her behalf.

Michael Westmore was presented with the Vanguard Award for his work on “Rocky,” “Star Trek,” “Mask” and “Raging Bull.” Kevin Haney received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work on “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Hocus Pocus 2.”

The first awards for daytime TV had a “Moonlight” “La La Land” moment when an envelope mixup resulted in the winners for hairstyling being read out instead of makeup and the team from “The Young and the Restless” came...

The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Tuesday revealed nominations for the 11th annual Muahs Awards, featuring 23 categories honoring outstanding achievements in make-up and hair styling artistry in motion pictures, television, commercials, music videos and live theater.

Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 scored a leading four nominations on the movie side, landing noms in four of the five competitive categories. Netflix’s Maestro also showed well with three noms. On the TV side, ABC’s Dancing With the Stars leads all titles with five nominations, while Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has three.

The 2024 Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards have officially unveiled their nominees.

The ceremony, taking place February 18, marks the annual awards show for the IATSE Local 706 union, honoring achievements in make-up and hair styling artistry across motion pictures, television, commercials, music videos, and live theater in 23 nomination categories. Julie Socash, IATSE Local 706 president, announced the 2024 nominees, which include “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Saltburn,” “Barbie,” “Maestro,” “Poor Things,” and “Nyad.”

Notably shut out was “Priscilla,” Sofia Coppola’s film that IndieWire’s Bill Desowitz predicted would be a frontrunner for the 2024 Oscars.

On the TV side, “The Idol,” “Ahsoka,” “The Last of Us,” “The Crown,” and “Star Trek: Picard” are among the nominees. A tie in the Best Special Make-Up Effects TV category makes for six nominees as opposed to the typical five.

As previously announced, Oscar and Emmy-winning make-up artist Michael Westmore will receive the esteemed Vanguard Award during the ceremony.

The Muahs Guild’s feature nominees vary quite bit from this season’s Oscar shortlist for the category. In fact, Guardians 3 was already snubbed in the makeup and hairstyling Oscar race, failing to make the shortlist of 10 films that advanced to the upcoming branch bake-off.

The Season 4 finale of “Stranger Things,” which streamed July 1, 2022 on Netflix, was recently nominated for six Emmy Awards: music supervision, non-prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing and stunt performance (x2). However, due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes, the upcoming Emmys, which were supposed to take place in September 2023, have been pushed back to January 2024. That means the heralded episode in question, titled “The Piggyback,” will have to wait an astounding 555 days between airing and trophy-bestowing.

To clarify: the Creative Arts Emmys (mostly for below-the-line and technical achievements) will now take place January 6 and 7 of 2024, and the main Primetime Emmys are scheduled for one week later on Monday, January 15.

Typically at the Emmy Awards, a TV show is judged on a full season as it aired entirely within a single eligibility period. However, in extremely rare cases, a drama or comedy will have what’s known as “orphaned” episodes that air outside of the cut-off date. That’s exactly why Season 4 of The Duffer Brothers‘ sci-fi megahit “Stranger Things” is eligible in two consecutive Emmy cycles, last year and this year. Gold Derby has exclusively learned which 13 categories Netflix is submitting for consideration at the 2023 Emmys (see below).

To recap, the first seven episodes of “Stranger Things 4” streamed on May 27, 2022 and thus competed at last year’s Emmys, where it nabbed 13 nominations and won five. But the last two episodes streamed on July 1, 2022, a full month after the eligibility period ended. TV academy rules stipulate that those two orphaned episodes are now eligible at the 2023 Emmys, but with a catch.

Throughout the currently-running first season of Peacock’s “Poker Face,” guests to actor-writer-co-creator Natasha Lyonne’s murder mystery party have found themselves transformed almost beyond recognition. While this has included Chloë Sevigny as a metalhead, and Judith Light and S. Epartha Merkerson as radical hippies-turned-doubly-radical-senior citizens, one transmutation stands above the rest: Episode 8’s “The Orpheus Syndrome” and the makeover given to actress Cherry Jones.

In its script written by Alice Ju and Lyonne (who made her “Poker Face” directing debut with Ep. 8), Jones’ ‘Laura’ character is a big money, power mad, special effects house co-founder who’ll stop at nothing to maintain her position within the film community — including murder.

Enter “Poker Face” makeup head Amy L. Forsythe and hair department head Marcel Dagenais – both worked with Lyonne on her “Russian Doll” series – to transform Jones’ usual earth-mother beauty into something stark and haughtily haute couture.

Elvis topped the feature competition at the 10th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards (IATSE Local 706), winning a pair of awards for period make-up and period hair styling.

Accepting with the team, Shane Thomas said of the team’s challenge to creating Elvis Presley, “We wanted to represent and respect, but not impersonate.” He also saluted director Baz Luhrmann’s “unwavering commitment” to filmmaking.

Also on Saturday at The Beverly Hilton, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever collected the award for contemporary hair styling. Department head Camille Friend dedicated the award to the late Chadwick Boseman.

Angela Bassett – who is Oscar-nominated for her role as Queen Ramonda in Wakanda Forever – received the Guild’s Distinguished Artisan Award during the ceremony. Bassett called the Guild members the “unsung heroes of filmmaking” as she accepted the award. “For any show, there is a team who works long and hard to help us bring to life the character.

The Batman and Elvis lead the feature noms for the 10th Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards ( IATSE Local 706), which announced its nominations on Wednesday morning.

The Batman is nominated in the categories for contemporary make-up, contemporary hair styling, and special make-up effects. Elvis is a contender for period or character make-up, period or character hair styling, and special make-up effects.

Both movies are shortlisted for the Oscar in make-up and hair styling, along with Amsterdam, Babylon, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Blonde, which received two Muahs Guild nominations apiece; The Whale, which earned one Guild nomination; and All Quiet On The Western Front, Crimes of the Future and Emancipation.

Winners will be announced during a ceremony hosted by Melissa Peterman on Feb. 11 at The Beverly Hilton

The Batman is the sole triple nominee on the film side. Pics scoring two noms apiece are Amsterdam, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Elvis and The Menu.

Awards for outstanding achievement in make-up and hair styling artistry will be presented in 23 categories spanning film, TV, commercials/music videos and live theater. Coming 2 America and Saturday Night Live were triple winners at last year’s Muahs Awards.

Since the modern Muahs Awards began in 2014, one of its marquee film winners — has gone on the claim the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar every year — except in 2022. The Academy Award went to The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which was up for three of the guild’s awards but went home empty-handed.

Sometimes reality is stranger than fiction, and according to Stranger Things' lead makeup artist Amy L. Forsythe, the story behind Eddie Munson's (Joseph Quinn) tattoos is almost unbelievable. In an interview with Insider, Forsythe explained that when she and her multiple Emmy-nominated makeup team designed Eddie's tattoos, they weren't trying to slip in hidden clues, rather they were simply going off of the scripted details for his character – long before Eddie's "Master of Puppets" performance was disclosed.

“I feel like there’s a lot of different facets of what we do that are in that episode,” says “Stranger Things” makeup department head Amy L. Forsythe about the episode “Chapter Two: Vecna’s Curse,” for which she’s nominated for an Emmy for Best Period and/or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic). “Vecna’s Curse” covers multiple parallel story arcs: Hopper (David Harbour) imprisoned in Russia, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) tormented by bullies at a roller rink, and poor unfortunate student journalist Fred (Logan Riley Bruner) tormented and ultimately killed by Vecna. “A lot of our artists were all tethered to that episode,” Forsythe explains. “We have beauty, we’ve got character. Stranger Things earned 13 Emmy nominations this season, including Outstanding Drama Series, thanks to the unsung heroes of the show—the below-the-line departments who put in the tireless effort to create the “surreal madness” of the series. From ‘de-aging’ Millie Bobbie Brown to building Vecna and his lair in the Upside Down, the collaboration of the craft departments continues to bring the series to new heights. Here, some of the Emmy-nominated craft department heads give insight into the most important aspects of this season.

One of the most difficult tasks this season was de-aging Eleven for flashback scenes. “Before shooting we explored just about every option, including deepfake, full CG head replacement, smoothing and warping,” says VFX supervisor Michael Maher Jr. “Luckily, our experienced friends at Lola Visual Effects agreed to take on the work and help us out. They arranged a shoot with a special, proprietary camera and lighting rig called an egg.

Nominees for the seventh annual Muahs Guild Awards were unveiled on Monday by they Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild, with Paramount’s Rocketman and Lionsgate’s Bombshell scoring the most noms among movies and FX’s American Horror Story: 1984 and Fosse/Verdon, HBO’s Chernobyl and Nickelodeon’s All That leading the TV side.

The awards, which honoring achievements in make-up and hair styling in film, TV, commercials and live theater, will be bestowed at a gala January 11 at The Novo by Microsoft at L.A. Live. The guild will also award make-up artist Thomas Burman and hair stylist Martin Samuel with Lifetime Achievement Awards during the ceremony.

Final voting begins December 3 for the Muahs Guild Awards and closes January 3, 2020.

The character makeup that turned Charlize Theron into Megyn Kelly in “Bombshell” and Taron Egerton into Elton John in “Rocketman” has helped those two films lead in nominations for the 2020 Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards, which were announced on Monday morning.

The two films received three nominations each in the five feature-film categories, with “Bombshell” being recognized for contemporary makeup, special makeup effects and contemporary hair styling, and “Rocketman” nominated for period and/or character makeup, special makeup effects and period and/or character hair styling.

“Hustlers,” “John Wick: Parabellum,” “Downton Abbey,” “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Joker” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” were nominated for two awards each.

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” earned high marks from the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild, garnering three nominations for their annual awards honoring achievements in film, television, commercials, and theater. It’s not on the Oscar shortlist of seven , however.

Eligible for Hair and Makeup Oscars are Guild nominees “Deadpool,” “Florence Foster Jenkins,” “Hail, Caesar!,” “Star Trek Beyond” and “Suicide Squad.” Not Oscar shortlisted, however, are Guild nominees “La La Land,” “Loving,” and “Nocturnal Animals,” which garnered two nominations apiece. Also ineligible for the Oscar are nominees “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Silence,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” and “Doctor Strange.”

On the television side, “Saturday Night Live” led with four nominations, followed by “Westworld,” “Game of Thrones,” and “Penny Dreadful” with three each. “Transparent,” “Stranger Things,” and “Empire” each received two.
