Hollywood’s New Leaders: Film

Richard Baker, 39

Exec VP, marketing and distribution, FilmNation Entertainment

Take one self-described nerd, mix marketing expertise gained at the Edinburgh Intl. Film Festival and the Weinstein Co., and hire him at FilmNation to oversee marketing plus distribution on Benedict Cumberbatch starrer “The Imitation Game.” Result? A record $7 million purchase of “Imitation” by TWC at Berlin for the likely Oscar contender. Title aside, Baker is a jack of many trades, having shaped the studio’s brand and art-directed the “Imitation” reel that secured its purchase. He recalls his first boss, an “eccentric chain-smoking old-school theater manager” who “never hid her mistakes.” “It’s Ok to ask stupid questions,” he says. “But only once.”

Gillian Bohrer, 36

Exec VP production, Lionsgate

Bohrer has only had to interview once for a job. When she felt ready to move up in the world, her company evolved from Summit Entertainment (where she started 11 years ago) to Lionsgate.

‘Interstellar’ Eyes $50 Million-Plus Launch at Box Office

‘Interstellar’ Eyes $50 Million-Plus Launch at Box Office
The opening of Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” is still almost three weeks away, but tickets for the space adventure are going fast.

Like all of Nolan’s projects, “Interstellar” remains cloaked in secrecy. Its plot is a mystery besides a few clues that it will center on an ecological cataclysm on earth and wormholes. It’s not a sequel, it’s not based on a young adult bestseller or a toy. Instead, it’s a wholly original concept.

After the success of “The Dark Knight” films and “Inception,” Nolan has become a brand in and of himself and “Interstellar” is performing as well as popular franchise pictures.

The picture is looking at a debut of more than $50 million based on early tracking and that number could rise as reviews roll in, television commercials become ubiquitous and word-of-mouth increases. An opening in the range of “Gravity’s” $55.8 million seems achievable, even

Chinese Theater Renovation Unveiled

The management of the Tcl Chinese Theater gave press a sneak peak of the venue Monday and showed off a startling transformation of the historic space.

A giant curved silver Imax screen hangs at the front of an orchestra section that has been reconfigured literally from the ground up: The original floor itself has been partially demolished and replaced with swooping stadium seating that extends much lower than before.

“It’s grand and it’s regal. There’s no place in the world where a premiere feels as it does here,” Alwyn Hight Kushner, president and chief operating officer of the Tcl Chinese Theaters, told Variety. And with the new seating and its other upgrades, Kushner said, the Chinese will be pursuing premieres — Imax and non-Imax alike.

The renovated theater will open to the public on Sept. 20 with the restored, Imax 3D-converted “The Wizard of Oz,” and longtime patrons of
