Joy began his racing broadcast career at Stafford Motor Speedway in CT in the 1970s and in 1977 was hired by MRN Radio where he worked until 1991. He began television work in 1981 on ESPN and by 1983 was a regular on racing broadcasts for CBS. He worked on CBS and the Nashville Network cable station until he was hired by FOX television in 2001.
