Film Review: ‘Love Beats Rhymes’

Film Review: ‘Love Beats Rhymes’
Pop star Azealia Banks enters the ring in the rap battle romance “Love Beats Rhymes” veiled in black with a microphone, a dead rose and a coffin. Her character Coco Ford, a struggling New York singer, looks like a witch, and Banks’ fans might shiver remembering that the singer-turned-actress actually is one (last year, she posted a Snapchat video of the bloody closet where she sacrifices chickens). That first image of Banks haunts the film long after director RZA, the head of the Wu-Tang Clan, attempts to exorcise it with an inspirational drama about Coco’s summer-semester poetry class. With a plot as predictable as a haiku, RZA and screenwriter Nicole Jefferson Asher would have done better to embrace the strangeness.

Coco is at a crossroads. Her four-person freestyle group wants a record deal, but the three dudes in the band don’t want to write down lyrics — especially her flaky crush Mahlik (John David Washington of “Ballers

When struggling rapper Coco (Azealia Banks) enrolls in a poetry class, she thinks her rhymes will impress her teacher, Professor Dixon (Jill Scott). Instead, Dixon challenges Coco to seek real meaning in her lyrics, setting her on a journey of discovery that takes her through rap clubs and poetry slams, leading her to find her true voice — and true love — in this uplifting movie costarring Lucien Laviscount and Common.

Love Beats Rhymes is set for release on December 1st, 2017.

"All I ever wanted is to be a rapper," Azealia Banks' character Coco says in the new trailer for the RZA-directed Love Beats Rhymes. "I want people to fall in love with my words."

Originally titled after the lead character's name, the now-named Love Beats Rhymes follows Coco, a struggling, aspiring artist as she navigates showcasing credibility in a live setting and with record industry types while working on her craft. The trailer focuses on inspiration and finding one's voice.

First Official Trailer for RZA's Slam Poetry Film 'Love Beats Rhymes'

"I need more than potential to sell records." Lionsgate has released the first official trailer for the new film directed by RZA titled Love Beats Rhymes, a musical drama about a struggling rapper who turns to slam poetry. Azealia Banks plays Coco, who takes a poetry class and tries to impress her teacher with her rhymes. Instead, she learns to dig deeper and discovers her "true voice." This film also stars Hana Mae Lee, Method Man, John David Washington, Common, Lorraine Toussaint, Lucien Laviscount, and Jill Scott and Professor Dixon. This reminds me of the film festival hit Bodied, about rapping, but it also seems to have its own nice vibe to it that might make for good entertainment and creative inspiration. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for RZA's Love Beats Rhymes, direct from YouTube: When struggling rapper Coco (Azealia Banks) enrolls in a poetry class, she thinks her rhymes will impress her teacher,
