Movie Review – House of Salem (2016)

House of Salem, 2016.

Directed by James Crow.

Starring Jessica Arterton, Jack Brett Anderson, Liam Kelly, Leslie Mills, Robert Lowe, and Dean Maskell.

Synopsis:

A gang kidnaps a young boy but instead of receiving a ransom they discover they are part of a satanic ritual.

Writer/director James Crow’s House of Salem is a film full of ideas and potential, melding together crime and horror in a story that really is a lot bigger than what you get to see on the screen. However, it is a potential that largely goes unrealised by the time the end credits roll despite some spirited attempts at recreating the off-kilter dread and sense of impending doom of fellow British genre movies like Kill List and The Wicker Man.

The setup is that a young boy named Josh is kidnapped by a masked gang, with a female member of the gang named Nancy (Jessica

‘House of Salem’ Review

Stars: Jessica Arterton, Leslie Mills, Liam Kelly, Jack Brett Anderson, Robert Lowe, Dean Maskell, Andrew Lee Potts, Anna Nightingale | Written and Directed by James Crow

It would seem that British horror is on something of a roll at the moment. Film after film it seems filmmakers from these shores have stepped up their game tenfold, be it in an attempt to compete with their American counterparts or be it that more home-grown horror is finally seeing the light of day (a few years ago British-made product would really struggle to find distribution outside of a few small DVD labels here in the UK). Whatever it may be, it’s safe to say British horror is back with a vengeance. And James Crow’s House of Salem is a perfect example of that.

Screened Frightfest in London back in 2016, House of Salem is the latest horror film from Kent-based writer/director James Crow,

Movie Review – House of Salem (2016)

House of Salem, 2016.

Written and Directed by James Crow.

Starring Jessica Arterton, Leslie Mills, Liam Kelly, Jack Brett Anderson, Robert Lowe, Dean Maskell, Andrew Lee Potts, and Anna Nightingale.

Synopsis:

A gang of kidnappers become a young boy’s protectors when they discover they have been duped into taking part in a dark satanic ritual.

Writer/director James Crow (Curse of the Witching Tree) makes stylish use of genre mixing in this feature, with a blend of British crime thriller and supernatural horror keeping suspense up to the max with plenty of surprises in store. Calling to mind the 1970’s psychological thriller output of Hammer Films (films like Demons of the Mind and Fear in the Night (both 1972) or more recent examples of Brit Horror crime thrillers such as Kill List (2011) which meld different genre elements into a horror film, House of Salem delights in never really letting the audience know where its going.
