Review: Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

  • Comicmix
Young Adult novels tend to work best when they are metaphors for their readers’ lives. James Dashner’s Maze Runner trilogy certainly applied the zigs and zags of an adolescent’s development to that of a maze where the wrong turn can have devastating consequences. The books sold well and in the wake of The Hunger Games’ success, they were naturals for screen adaptation.

The first, 2014’s Maze Runner, was nowhere near as engaging with flat characters and a dumb, unsustainable society of teens. We were left with the gaggle of teens getting out from the maze and into its inner workings.

The Scorch Trials, out now oi Combo Pack from 20th Century Home Entertainment, immediately picks up from that moment as we trace the Gladers: Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Minho (Ki Hong Lee), Teresa Agnes (Kaya Scodelario), Frypan (Dexter Darden) and Winston (Alexander Flores) as they go exploring unchartered territory.

Movie Review – Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015)

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, 2015.

Directed by Wes Ball.

Starring Dylan O’Brien, Ki Hong Lee, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Dexter Darden, Alexander Flores, Jacob Lofland, Rosa Salazar, Giancarlo Esposito, Patricia Clarkson and Aidan Gillen.

Synopsis:

After narrowly escaping the maze, Thomas (O’Brien) and the others are whisked off to a facility full of medical equipment, military grade weapons and lies. Finding themselves on the run again, they begin to discover the truth about what brought them here, to the maze and to the scorched deserts outside, as well as the shocking truth about each other.

If the first Maze Runner film felt a bit hollow, it’s because absolutely everything of import is crammed into this one.

We pick up exactly where we left off: Thomas and the other maze survivors are carried to an undisclosed location, where heavily armed guards keep them in line and a man named Janson (Aidan Gillen,

Film Review: ‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials’ is Dystopian Rambling

Chicago – Movie pundits are falling all over themselves to point out there is no maze running in “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials,” so buyer beware! What began in the first film as a new take in the dystopian Young Adult movie genre, has become a scattered, uninteresting mess.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

Having not read the original source novels, it was impossible to distinguish what made this latest adventure so intent on expansion. When our young heroes were whisked away in the first film, it seemed like an expressionistic twist, that the curtain was about to be drawn back on something that was really amazing. But what we get in ‘The Scorch Trials’ is a series of step-by-step weigh stations, that make less sense as the journey goes on. Also, so much of the first film depended on the personalities of the kids, and in this one they’re reduced to tiny props

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – The Review

Tm and © 2015 Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

By Cate Marquis

The second in a trilogy based on the young adult science fiction series, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials picks up where the first one left off. The sequel gets Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and friends from point A to point B, that is, across the burnt desert landscape known as the “Scorch,” with a few detours and twists along the way. Although they have left the maze behind, there is still lots of running.

The second installment has relatively few plot points, which leaves lots of time for chases, pursued by the wicked forces of Wckd or the zombie-like Cranks. The chases and battles take place in a variety of devastated landscapes, each filled with imaginative FX obstacles. This second movie reportedly follows the second book fairly closely but this installment may be the weakest book of the three.

Film Review: ‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials’

Film Review: ‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials’
In a 1939 short story by lifelong labyrinth aficionado Jorge Luis Borges, the king of Babylonia attempts to embarrass his guest, the king of the Arabs, by stranding him in a convoluted maze he’s constructed at his palace. Furious, the Arabian king responds by sacking Babylonia, riding the rival king out into the middle of the desert and leaving him to die, saying, “Allow me to show you my labyrinth.” Though lacking in Borges’ ironic symmetry, Wes Ball’s “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials,” a sequel to last year’s Ya adaptation “The Maze Runner,” pulls the exact same switcheroo. Containing no mazes but plenty of running, the film takes the original’s surviving characters and drops them into the middle of an entirely different type of movie, this one a desert-set zombie chase. Generally successful on its own as a strange survival-horror-action film for the pre-college set, but without
