‘This Close’ EPs on Telling a Story About the Deaf Community: ‘Representation Matters’
Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman’s new Sundance Now drama “This Close” is the first show written, produced, and created by deaf people, and with it, the duo is carving out a place in the television landscape not only for themselves but for others in their community.

“When I first moved to Los Angeles, there was this idealism, this perspective of ‘I will do well enough where I won’t even be seen as a deaf actor, I’ll just be seen as an actor,’ but through that process I learned that I was, for lack of a better word, trying to whitewash myself — just paint over who I really was,” Stern tells Variety. “At the end of the day, I am a deaf person, I am a deaf actor, and I can’t separate that. You can try to succeed at work without trying to paint over who you really are, and you can

‘This Close’ Review: Deaf Best Friends Make Familiar Stories Fresh Again in Charming New Series — Sundance 2018

“This Close” is going to get a lot of attention for its rather groundbreaking portrayal of two deaf best friends — and it should. Aside from the Freeform series “Switched at Birth” and Oscar winner Marlee Matlin’s recurring stint on “The West Wing,” hearing-impaired characters played byhearing-impaired actors aren’t all that well-known. “This Close” may not make its stars into household names, but not for lack of merit.

Created by and starring two deaf writer-performers, Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman, the Sundance Now original series emphasizes the specific challenges and frustrations they face living in a world largely unfamiliar with their perspective. Just as importantly, it makes sure to highlight the unique beauties their hearing loss can bring to life.
