Indian blockbuster “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” is set to be released in China in the coming months. It joins a growing number of Indian films to crack the world’s second-largest film market.

The fantasy action film is to be released by EStars Media, which previously handled “Baahubali: The Beginning,” in China. The sequel has now cleared the censorship process, but does not yet have a settled release date. International sales are handled by an offshoot of producer Arka MediaWorks.

Directed by S.S. Rajamouli and starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah Bhatia, “Baahubali 2” was released in April last year in India and most major territories. It is one of the three highest-grossing Indian films of all time with a lifetime $131 million gross.

15 Great Dancing Scenes from Asian Movies

Se Asian movies, at least as they are perceived in their whole by the majority of international audience, are known for a number of things: Horror, violence, Wong Kar Wai, Park Chan-wook and Takashi Miike (ok, I am just oversimplifying things here). So, for this list I decided to show another aspect of Asian movies, not so frequently mentioned or even considered for that matter, apart from the Bollywood movies that is. Without further ado, here are 12 great dancing scenes from Asian movies, with the lion’s share belonging to Wong Kar Wai, who has presented a number of astonishing sequences through the years.

1. Lai Yiu-fai and Ho Po-wing are dancing in a kitchen (Wong Kar Wai, Happy Together,1997, Hong Kong)

Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung are tangoing in the middle of a kitchen, with their love and adoration for each other becoming evident by the way they look at and lean on each other.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017) by S.S. Rajamouli

With titles like the “highest grossing Indian film of all time and the “highest grossing film in India”, “Baahubali 2” provides a great conclusion to the epic franchise and a truly magnificent experience.

The story continues where the first ended, with Kattappa concluding the story of how he ended up killing Baahubali’s father, Amarendra, in a tale that involves love and romance between Amarendra and Devasena, the continuous treacheries of Bhallaladeva and Bijjaladeva, and Avanthika showing her terrifying side, even against her most beloved son. As soon as the story ends, Baahubali begins his expedition against Bhallaladeva and the kingdom that should be rightly his.

S.S. Rajamouli implements the same, quite successful tactics of the first film, creating a movie where impressive action, music and dance, and a very fitting hyperbole in comic style, are the norm. One could say he even went a step further this time, as the movie includes flying ships,

Ryan Swen’s Top 10 Films of 2017

Appropriately enough for one of the oddest years in recent memory, my favorite films from 2017 are a motley, often contradictory mix. They reflect something that can only be described a general malaise in the world cinema, which created many fine films but few standouts.

Moreso than in years past, even the films that quickened my heart usually did so in subtle, perplexing ways, and many of the most fascinating works, such as The Human Surge, By the Time It Gets Dark, and Kékzakállú, to name three magnificent whatsits that didn’t crack the upper echelon of my list, were also largely frustrating and confounding.

Perhaps this accounts for the unexpected presence of not just one, but three franchise films on the following list: the perfect balance of quality and genuine daring was often found in the oddest places this year. One exceedingly important and noteworthy exclusion: Twin Peaks: The Return,

Contemporary Chinese Cinema: The Year So Far

  • MUBI
Contemporary Chinese Cinema is a column devoted to exploring contemporary Chinese-language cinema primarily as it is revealed to us at North American multiplexes.Over the last few years it has become increasingly easy to see mainstream Asian films in North America at the same time they are released in their home countries. Thanks to partnerships with small, international distributors, the major multiplex chains (AMC, Cinemark, Regal) have devoted a handful of screens in major markets to showing new releases from India, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most of these titles fall under the radar of both critics and audiences outside the diasporic communities to which they are targeted. They play for a week or two and then disappear, outside of a handful of breakout titles. Last year Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid made headlines for its high per-screen averages in North America as it shattered domestic box office records in China.
