With tarot readers just a few swipes away on TikTok and the uptick of interest in astrology over the last several decades, the idea of a horror feature based on the practice was always right around the corner. Earlier this year, a story finally made its way to the big screen with Spenser Cohen and Anna Halbergs co-directorial debut, Tarot. Based on Nicholas Adams 1992 novel, Horrorscope, the movie centers on a group of college friends who have a little fun one night with a Tarot deck. Soon theyll find they shouldve stuck to the more classic Kings Cup or any other favorite card-based drinking game as the deck seemingly comes to life and picks them off one after the other with the survivors scrambling to put an end to the madness before fate comes for them.

Tarot is a 2024 supernatural horror film based on the 1992 novel, Horrorscope, by Nicholas Adams. The story revolves around a group of friends who find an old tarot deck and decide to do personal readings based on both the tarot cards and their astrology signs. The following day, things take a turn for the worse when each reading starts coming true.
As expected from the supernatural sub-genre of horror, most of the main characters get picked off one by one. This is an expected outcome for the classic group of friends who get cursed or haunted set-up. What makes these types of movies stand out is how creative the curse is, how gruesome the kills are, and how the movie ends. A few other elements,...

Every person faces their fate in Tarot, but Haley shows that destiny can be changed via personal growth. Paxton's survival against The Fool challenges the idea of predetermined fate based on personality traits in the movie. The lore of Tarot leaves room for a potential prequel or sequel, exploring the origins of the deck and the characters' future choices.
The supernatural horror movie Tarot ending explained whether a person's fate is truly set in stone and influenced by the stars, or if every person has the capacity for growth and change. Based on the 1992 novel Horrorscope by Nicholas Adams, Tarot features a group of students on a weekend getaway as they discover an old deck of tarot cards in the mansion they've rented. One of them, Haley, performs readings for the entire group, which quickly pivots away from harmless fun.

Box office success doesn't always mean critical acclaim - Tarot made money but earned poor reviews. Tarot's cast and spooky trailer led to high expectations, but the lack of originality disappointed viewers. Despite mixed reviews, Tarot's success at the box office secured its spot on Netflix's list of horror hits.
Although 2024's Tarot received generally poor reviews, the young adult horror movie was a box office success, and now it's available to stream. In general, the two things that indicate whether a movie is good or not are its critical reaction and its box office. At times, these two areas align. For example, 2023's Talk to Me grossed $92 million and also received a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, sometimes a movie's reviews and its box office oppose each other completely. In that case, the movie falls somewhere in the middle between great and terrible.

After a successful box office run, Sony’s Screen Gems’ Tarot card-themed movie Tarot (formerly titled Horrorscope) is heading to streaming next month.
Look for Tarot to arrive on Netflix on August 1, 2024.
The plot sees a group of friends unleashing a curse when they decide to play with a mysterious box of tarot cards. One by one, they come face to face with their fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings.
Larsen Thompson, Harriet Slater, Adain Bradley, Avantika and Jacob Batalon star in the gateway horror movie Tarot, which was directed by Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg. The film is very loosely based on a novel by Nicholas Adams.
I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “Tarot has the makings of a breezy gateway horror movie perfect for sleepovers, though it’s undermined by surface-level characters and storytelling.” Her review continues,...

Big-budgeted films with a stellar cast are normally expected to perform better at the box office than low-budgeted films. However, the 2024 box office so far has seen more major flops, big-budget films failing to make it to the breakeven point, and low-budgeted movies garnering millions across the world. And so it was for actors like Henry Cavill and Ryan Gosling, who despite their fanfare and talent, failed to woo the audiences with their feats.

Look, far be it from me to tell a young, diverse, and predominantly non-male group of horror-movie protagonists what to do. But if I were ever in a situation that involved dabbling with the supernatural in highly creepy settings while also breaking long-established rules involved with the aforementioned dabbling, I would simply not do that. Of course, there wouldn't be a movie for us to talk about here in that hypothetical, but that ain't my problem!
For better or worse (you can probably guess which one it is), nobody involved with the production of "Tarot" bothered to listen to my advice. For this group of college kids who committed the faux pas of all faux pas by messing with a tarot deck that wasn't theirs to begin with, the end result was ... pretty messy, to put it mildly. Spider-Man franchise star Jacob Batalon appears in a much darker movie with his role in the new horror film Tarot. It's not your average horror movie, as the slasher features a unique storyline.
In Tarot, a group of friends are plagued with one after another dying mysteriously in ways that are reminiscent of their fortunes from a tarot card reading. Speaking about the film with Cbr's Kevin Polowy in a new interview, Batalon addressed how the interesting plot was what drew him to get involved. The actor commented on how there's been an abundance of more traditional horror movies lately, and this opened the door for something like Tarot to stand out in a big way.

The new horror movie Tarot did not have the warmest reception with critics upon release, to say the least. At Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a low approval rating of 21 percent, but that doesn't mean the horror flick was not a success.
Via The Numbers, Tarot will be rounding out the weekend with $3.4 million earned at the domestic box office, landing in the No. 4 spot with its second weekend in theaters. That brings the film up to more than $12 earned domestically, and counting in $8.2 million from overseas ticket sales, Tarot has surpassed $20.2 million worldwide. Given the low budget of the film, which was made for around $8 million, Tarot can be seen as a big financial success by earning so much more in less than two weeks in theaters.

Filmmakers often say that they have to personalize their work. After all, they painstakingly devote at least two years of their lives to bring a film to fruition, but in the case of Tarot co-directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, they turned what would normally be a genre exercise into something from the heart.

The horror movie Tarot doesn't understand the nature of its subject and has forgettable characters, but the engaging performance from Jacob Batalon adds humor and relatability. The jump scares are surprisingly effective thanks to good editing, and the concept of the tarot cards as horror characters is cool. The film lacks true horror intensity thanks to its PG-13 rating, and it relies on the usual horror tropes.
A box office joyride may not be in the cards for Tarot. The new horror film from co-directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg suffers from an overuse of horror tropes and disposable characters. A box office joyride may not be in the cards for Tarot. The new horror film from co-directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg suffers from an overuse of horror tropes and disposable characters. Despite an 8% Rotten Tomatoes score, Tarot is projected to take No. 4 in its opening weekend with a domestic gross of $6.25 million. This total has already nearly recouped the horror movie's $8 million budget. It shouldn't be difficult for the movie to hit its break-even point, though it may not make a huge profit.
Tarot is on its way to recouping its budget despite only earning an 8% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The new horror movie, which was written and directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, is based on the 1992 Nicholas Adams novel Horrorscope and follows a group of friends trying to break a deadly curse that they accidentally unleashed from a deck of tarot cards. The movie features an ensemble cast that includes Pennyworth's Harriet Slater, Spider-Man: No Way Home's Jacob Batalon, and Avantika, who played Karen in the 2024 Mean Girls movie musical.

A deck full of terror awaits in the new Screen Gems horror movie Tarot, which features a variety of new supernatural entities designed by concept artist Trevor Henderson.
Tarot, in theaters now, is written and directed by Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg, very loosely based on a novel by Nicholas Adams.
The plot sees a group of friends unleashing a curse when they decide to play with a mysterious box of tarot cards. One by one, they come face to face with their fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings.
Trevor Henderson designed the creature concept art, which was transformed into the cursed tarot deck by artist Richard Wells. The supernatural Tarot entities were then brought to life on screen by special effects and creature effects designer Dan Martin (Possessor, Infinity Pool). Bloody Disgusting spoke with Henderson about designing the entities for Tarot,...

Set in a world where every door creaks and there isn’t a single well-lit location, “Tarot” is little more than a clearinghouse of horror clichés.
Co-written, directed and executive produced by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (the podcast series “Classified”), the supernatural thriller repeatedly leverages the genre’s laziest mood-setting and suspense-building devices to keep its audience on the edge of their seats. But even featuring a moderately charming ensemble led by “Spider-Man: Homecoming” breakout Jacob Batalon, the film’s PG-13 rating — and lack of virtually any characters other than its doomed protagonists — severely limits the efficacy of those techniques and tropes even when they’re deployed skillfully.
Batalon plays Paxton, the wisecracker among a studiously diverse college-age friend group that rents a remote mansion to celebrate the birthday of Elise (Larsen Thompson). Scouring their rental for booze, the group foolishly breaks into a room marked “Keep Out,” where...

An evil curse gets awakened in Screen Gems horror movie Tarot when a group of friends recklessly ignore a sacred rule: never use someone else’s deck. Writers/Directors Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg unleash a variety of Tarot card-inspired entities on the group through practical effects, and create an unexpected connection to Insidious along the way.
The film comes exclusively to movie theaters on May 3, 2024.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Cohen and Halberg ahead of Tarot‘s release, where the pair shared more about the film’s practical effects-driven horrors and revealed how Tarot drew from Insidious in a specific way.
To start, though, the filmmakers reveal just how closely their horror movie sticks to the source novel Horrorscope by Nicholas Adams. The short answer is, well, it doesn’t at all!
Cohen explains, “It’s so different. We never even read the book and took nothing from the book. The only thing,...
