Avenged Sevenfold Announce Hail To The King Release Date

On June 26, Avenged Sevenfold led fans in an online scavenger hunt that resulted in the band’s new album cover art, title, and release date being announced.

Their sixth studio album, titled “Hail to the King,” will be released on Aug. 27, and the day before the band will play a free show at the Hollywood Palladium to celebrate the album release.

“Nightmare,” the band’s previous album, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has sold 765,000 copies to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Like that album, “Hail to the King” will be produced by Mike Elizondo.

Their previous album was released just under five months after The Rev passed away. Mike Portnoy, formerly of Dream Theater, filled in the position to record and toured with the band. Two songs, including the emotionally charged “Fiction” which features The Rev on vocals and piano, and “Save Me”, were dedicated to their fallen bandmate.

The Most Anticipated Albums Of The Year?

The Most Anticipated Albums Of The Year?
Nashville, Tenn. — Gary Clark Jr. had to learn how to trust someone else to record his major label debut.

When noted producer Mike Elizondo signed on to help with "Blak and Blu," Clark was more than a little leery.

"I'm very sensitive," Clark said, chuckling as he recounted the story in a phone interview. "I like to hold onto what I do, like it's mine and this is the way it is. So I was a bit worried going in, you know? Having not known him, what is this cat gonna do to my songs? They're good as is. But I let it go: This is great, I'm getting to work with this amazing musician, great producer and a cool guy, so get over yourself and just make an album."

"Blak and Blu," out this week, is one of the most anticipated albums of the year, put out by a

Kimbra has already topped the charts as Gotye's former love on his smash hit "Somebody That I Used To Know." This week, the New Zealand-born songstress will finally release her genre-defying Vows in the U.S.

The album, which incorporates dance, pop and alternative, will be released on May 22. And despite the fact that Kimbra's "lived for these songs for nearly five years," she found a way to renew her Vows by featuring five new songs on the Stateside release.

"It kind of feels like it's gone through a bit of an evolution," she told MTV News. "For that reason, I feel refreshed going out to promote it. It still feels new."

In order to freshen up the album, she enlisted

Now it seems like Justin Timberlake is just messing with us. After endlessly deflecting questions about when, or if, he will return to making records, Timberlake dipped another toe into the music pool recently when he directed and made a cameo in the video for "Hoodies On, Hats Low" for his pals FreeSol, who are signed to Jt's Tennman record label.

Justin tweeted a link to the video on Wednesday, telling his 5.6 million followers, "new music ... if you like it pass it along." In addition to paying homage to Jt's hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, by showing a number of local landmarks in the town, which also gave birth to the group fronted by the rapper known as Free, the clip marks yet another feather in the

Watch: Mastodon premiere 'Black Tongue' from new album 'The Hunter'

When Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor told me earlier this year that the band was juggling who they wanted to produce their fifth full-length, I'll admit that I never thought they'd land on Mike Elizondo. It's not so much that I thought Elizondo incapable -- he's shocked with his propensity for variety, working with Eminem to Avenged Sevenfold to Fiona Apple. I thought of Dillinger collaborator Steve Evetts, or someone purely from the Hydra Head camp. Elizondo's been a good fit so far, if new track "Black Tongue" is any testament. The track is the first to arrive in full from "The...

Mastodon's Brent Hinds Battles Ohp, Remains Totally Awesome While Doing So

By Zachary Swickey

Mastodon's Brent Hinds may look like a biker from Hell — facial tattoos are slightly alarming — but the burly singer/guitarist is actually known for being quite the jokester (for example, here is discussing the finer points of Somali pirates and Michael Phelps with MTV back in 2009). Appropriately, he now stars in a new commercial for Elmyr, a local restaurant and cantina in his group’s hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. And while we can't vouch for the quality of Elmyr's food ... their commercials are totally top notch.

The whole thing opens with Hinds fishing at a peaceful pond as he turns to the camera and complains about rumbling in his stomach. As he kneels down to pet his dog, he reveals a doctor has diagnosed him with Ohp: overwhelming hunger pains. Hinds seemingly concerned, faces the camera and asks, "How do I know what food is right for me?

Will Fiona Apple Return To Us In 2011?

There are still three-and-a-half musically fruitful months left in 2010, but there is already a whole lot of excitement over a handful of releases set to appear in 2011. Next year, we'll probably hear new music from Lady Gaga and Ke$ha (both of whom talked about new albums recently) as well as the long-awaited Blink-182 reunion album, the return of U2 and a load of other high-profile releases. For a certain segment of the population, there is one piece of album news that is especially exciting: According to drummer and producer Charley Drayton, the spring of 2011 will welcome a brand new album by Fiona Apple.

"Hate to brag but I heard a couple new Fiona Apple tracks today," singer Michelle Branch wrote on Twitter last week. "Amazing."

The news of new Apple music is thrilling, especially considering how long it has been since we last heard from the 33-year-old songwriter. Her last release,

New Avenged Sevenfold Video Offers Up a Nightmare

You may have noticed we've cut back a bit on our coverage of the music scene, but when the news crossed our desk that the new Avenged Sevenfold video for the band's latest single, "Nightmare", is truly horror-themed, we thought we'd pass it along to you guys. Dig it!

Avenged Sevenfold are releasing their fifth studio album, Nightmare, on July 27th, and the video for the title track shows lead singer M. Shadows being strapped down to a gurney and rushed through the halls of a mental asylum where, room by room, he encounters different "nightmares". Now, I don't know about you guys, but one of my biggest fears is being trapped in the loony bin so, for this Woman, it's damned effective!

Sadly, while the members of Avenged Sevenfold were well into working on Nightmare, their lives changed forever. Jimmy Sullivan, aka the Rev, had died. They hadn’t just lost their drummer.

Avenged Sevenfold's 'Nightmare' Video: The Key Scene

The anticipation over the release of new music from Avenged Sevenfold has been palpable and feverish, partially because the group has an extremely devoted following, partially because they have been a band on the brink of a major breakthrough for a few years and partially because people were curious to see how they would handle the death of their drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan late last year. This week, the band unveiled the clip for their new single "Nightmare," which is the first track from their upcoming album of the same name (which hits stores next week).

Both as a song and as a video, "Nightmare" delivers. The track settles into a deeper metal groove than some of their past work, with jack-hammering guitars grinding out an extremely melodic riff. The music sounds extra thick, which can probably be credited to producer Mike Elizondo (who has worked with everybody from

'American Idol' Winner Kris Allen Made Writing A Priority On His Debut

'Singing a whole bunch of other people's songs — that's not who I am,' he says of writing or co-writing most of his tracks.

By Jim Cantiello

Kris Allen

Kris Allen is an "American Idol" of many firsts. He's the first married "Idol" winner. He's the first "short" dude (his words) who's taken home the grand prize. He's the first champ to leave the dreaded coronation song off his album. But he's the second "Idol" winner to have a sole writing credit on a track from his debut post-"Idol" CD.

Following in David Cook's footsteps, Kris included his self-penned "Red Guitar" on the album, and the track is already a legend among his fans. The autobiographical ditty was written for his wife long before he became a breakout star on the TV juggernaut. And for Kris, convincing his record label to let him write on
