Joseph Chiu is a Toronto-based Canadian composer known for his colourful and organic writing sensibilities, with a body of work that includes music for concert and film.
Recently named by Ludwig van Toronto as one of "six emerging Canadian composers to keep an eye on," his music has been presented and recorded by artists and ensembles throughout North America and Europe, including collaborations with the Quatuor Bozzini, Continuum Contemporary Ensemble, and Arraymusic, and has made appearances at festivals and venues such as the Canadian Music Centre, Tippet Rise Art Centre, and the Nordic Percussion Festival.
Joseph is an alumna of the Canadian League of Composers' PIVOT mentorship program and has held a residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity where he was awarded a full scholarship to write a new work for the Dior Quartet that was premiered as part of the centre's inaugural Evolution Concert Series.
Joseph has written scores for several films. His credits include the intimate fictional narrative, The Spirit of the Wild, directed by Solomon Olsen and the civil rights documentary film Mr. Charles, directed by Jacob Parent.
Joseph is classically trained, obtaining a BMus in composition from Wilfrid Laurier University and a MMus in composition from the University of Victoria.
