2024 is over, and we have seen some brilliant and not-so-brilliant TV shows on streaming services and cable networks. However, the sci-fi fantasy genre TV shows are proving to be the biggest ones this year with the release of shows like Fallout and 3 Body Problem. The sci-fi fans are having a great year, and if TV shows weren’t enough, we also got Dune: Part Two this year, which was the most successful sci-fi fantasy film in 2024. So, let’s check out the best new and returning sci-fi fantasy shows that came out last year.

In 2020, Michael Hirst's gripping historical drama series "Vikings" came to an end, rounding out the era of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his kin after six seasons (which was all the more impressive given that Hirst didn't think "Vikings" would make it past one). Few other shows have captured the realism and brutality of this era in history, with Northmen invading lands, quite like this one (although there are some good alternatives to "Vikings" out there).
Of course, Ragnar himself didn't make it past season 4, with the show pulling a "Game of Thrones" (as much as it tried to avoid comparisons to that series) and killing off one of its most important characters well before the end of the story. "And how the little piglets would grunt if they knew how the old boar suffered," because from there, all that was left was for the father's sons to battle...

Denis Villeneuve brought Frank Herbert’s Dune books to life with his movies, which went on to become a great success on screen. Further expanding this universe, Dune: Prophecy took everyone by surprise with its complex characters and storylines. However, as the show gears up for its second season, there are signs that the show’s highest-rated episode could be a wake-up call for the showrunners.

Despite receiving a solid reception, with a finale that was the highest in terms of ratings, Dune: Prophecy still lags behind other shows like Game of Thrones. This is something the creators need to work on so that season 2 doesn’t face the same challenges.
Why aren’t Dune: Prophecy’s episodes earning higher ratings?

The first season of Dune: Prophecy wrapped up last night with "The High-Handed Enemy," an eventful episode that left many of our characters in new and unexpected places. On Wallach IX, Dorotea — a Bene Gesserit sister killed decades ago — took over the body of her granddaughter Lila (Chloe Lea) and is now trying to steer the Sisterhood in a whole new direction. Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) is now a prisoner of her son Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel) on the planet Salusa Secundus, and Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) has traveled with Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) and swordmaster Kieran Atredies (Chris Mason) to the desert world of Arrakis to find out who's been manipulating Desmond from behind the scenes, and why.
Those are a lot of threads to leave dangling ahead. Happily, we now know the show will continue with a second season. Unhappily, it probably won't happen for a couple of years.

“Dune: Prophecy” on HBO is preparing for its second season after an exciting finale revealing shocking family secrets. It set the stage for a trip to Arrakis, the famous desert planet. The sci-fi show, set 10,000 years before the story of Paul Atreides, has been officially renewed, which means that fans will learn more about this beloved world.
There were some big surprises in the Season 1 finale. The bad guy Desmond Hart, played by Travis Fimmel, is Tula Harkonnen’s secret son, played by Olivia Williams. She has kept this secret from her sister Valya, who Emily Watson plays for many years. This complicated family relationship worsens the conflict, especially since Desmond’s brief reconciliation with Tula led to her arrest.
Watson stated, “Everything has changed,” as he thought about Valya’s broken outlook. She clarified that Valya still follows her sense of destiny, even though her views have been turned upside down.

The season 1 finale of Dune: Prophecy brought us lots of twists and turns. Tula Harkonnen is Desmond Hart's mother! Valya Harkonnen is now on Arrakis! The Bene Gesserit school is in utter disarray!
Naturally, there were also character deaths. Valya assigned the Bene Gesserit sister Francesca to kill Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong), the father of her son, but she didn't seem like she was going to go through with it. But she didn't need to: despairing after learning that his life was the result of a series of manipulations by the Sisterhood, Javicco drove a blade into his own body. And then his wife Natalya (Jodhi May) came in and killed Francesca (Tabu) with the very poisoned needle that was intended to kill her husband.
So is Emperor Corrino really dead? We recently got to participate in a roundtable interview with Dune: Prophecy stars Emily Watson (Valya) and Olivia Williams...

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Dune: Prophecy” Episode 6.
“Dune: Prophecy” finally took some characters to the fabled planet Arrakis in the finale of Season 1, but much more of the locale is to come in the second season.
The first season of the sci-fi prequel – which explored the rise of the Bene Gesserit 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides – ended with Valya (Emily Watson) escaping to the desert planet with Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussina) and Keiran (Chris Mason) as Desmond (Travis Fimmel) took more control of Salusa Secundus.
Showrunner Alison Schapker admitted at a recent press conference that Arrakis has been “exerting its pull from afar” after a season of keeping its distance — “whether that’s in the economics of spice trade or the psychological aspects and nightmares that are sort of imagery of Arrakis and Desmond’s past seeping into everyone’s consciousness.” She emphasized the satisfaction of actually...

[This story contains major spoilers from the Dune: Prophecy season finale.]
The hierarchy of the Dune universe just changed.
No, the Rock was nowhere to be found on the season finale of HBO’s Dune: Prophecy. Instead, it’s a different rock taking center stage: Arrakis, the desert planet at the heart of Frank Herbert’s novels on which the show is based.
While Arrakis is referenced throughout the first six-episode season, Dune: Prophecy avoided actually bringing the planet to life onscreen, save for some brief (but important) holographic flashes. Now, the thing is well and fully on display, thanks to the last scene of the finale. The spicy world of Arraks is officially on the map, and stands ready for exploration in the recently announced season two.
In a press conference last week, Dune: Prophecy showrunner Alison Schapker said the change in scenery was decided on after “a season of Arrakis kind of exerting its pull from afar,...

Episode 6 of Dune: Prophecy on HBO brings the first season of the show to a close. As the story is wound up, we get more revelations about the bloody trail Valya has left on her path to controlling the Sisterhood, while the balance of power shifts in the Imperium, and Javicco's personal feelings get in the way of his duty.
Once again, we're shown how Valya is one of the most manipulative and even outright evil characters in the show, as she was responsible for the deaths of over a dozen sisters who were loyal to Mother Dorotea and refused to join her side when she moved to take control.
You could perhaps see how Tula, though she's done horrible things herself, is at the very least a tragic character, who can be pitied for how far she's fallen after following her older sister's example and pursuing revenge for the death of their brother,...

Before its finale aired, HBO’s series Dune: Prophecy was renewed for a second season. After spending five episodes seeing the Bene Gesserit, the Corrinos, and the Insurgency led by Keiran Atreides bid for power of the Imperium, we are finally beginning to see each of their plans play out. To no surprise, none of their plans play out as they had hoped. But does Dune: Prophecy‘s finale deliver?
Dune: Prophecy Episode 6 Recap
The episode begins with Tula recalling the time when Valya (Jessica Barden) killed Dorotea. She and the other sisters decide to lie and say that Dorotea killed herself out of grief, hiding the truth of Valya’s betrayal.
Tula gets sick, and while Valya initially suspects that it’s because of her actions, Tula reveals that it is because she is pregnant. She wants to keep the baby even though it is Orry Atreides’s, and to her surprise,...

On the show co-produced by Legendary Television, Travis Fimmel plays Desmond Hart, a rival to the two sisters, who has certain powers. In the finale,...

Denis Villeneuve has already created a masterpiece with his Dune duology. However, Warner Bros.’s poor attempt at recreating the similar scale and vision of his universe with Dune: Prophecy has failed spectacularly, to say the least.
Dune: Prophecy [Credit: HBO]
The studio could not grasp the depth and layers that the complex narrative of Villeneuve’s universe holds, let alone implement it on a subliminal level in the new series. As such, Dune: Prophecy makes a daring few attempts to rise to the levels that its parent universe laid down for the fans. But even after 6 episodes, it ultimately fails to ascend to the level of perfection that Villeneuve achieved within his 2-hour-long masterpieces.

Veteran TV actor Barbara Marten is the standout in another uneven Dune: Prophecy chapter. Our review of episode 5:
Nb: In line with Film Stories policy, the following review is certified spoiler-free for Dune: Prophecy episode 4, but does contain spoilers for earlier instalments.
In a series so far heavy on serious faces and whispered rumours of doom, one of its unexpected delights is actor Barbara Marten. A veteran of such British TV shows as Brookside, Casualty and The Bill, she’s quietly bustled and swished through Dune: Prophecy as the captivatingly severe Sister Avila.
A voice of reason among the increasingly fractious sisterhood, Avila’s one of those characters who doesn’t drive the plot, but instead becomes a welcome presence who you’re always pleased to see whenever they show up.
In episode five, Avila stumbles on a secret Tula (Olivia Williams) has kept secret for a few days...

Episode 4 of Dune: Prophecy saw the conspiracy to dethrone Emperor Corrino reach an explosive climax with an assassination attempt getting foiled. In episode 5, we see the characters deal with the aftermath of that, but the result is much less thrilling, causing the show to fall back into the ways of its earlier episodes.
Dune: Prophecy Episode 5 Recap
At the beginning of the episode, we see Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel) suiting up in a new uniform for his new role as the Emperor’s Bashar — the commander of the Sardaukar. Corrino (Mark Strong) says that now more than ever, they must defend their values. He tasks Desmond with eradicating treason, which causes Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) to storm away in anger.
Desmond encourages Corrino to prioritize showing strength over facilitating trade. Meanwhile, Sister Francesca (Tabu) arrives at the request of Constantine, who is revealed to be her son. Constantine (Josh Heuston...

Believe it or not, we've arrived at the penultimate episode of the first season of Dune: Prophecy. Yep, there is only one more episode left in this six-episode season.
Some fans have written off the show as too short to be worth investing in, and there are points in this journey where I've thought that another episode or two could have helped. But I also want to applaud Dune: Prophecy for making the most of the time it's been alotted. A ton happened in each episode and continues to happen here.
I'll admit that I found this penultimate episode to be a little sleepy, which I attribute to it spending a lot of time with characters other than Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams). On the one hand, I commend Dune: Prophecy for committing to being an ensemble show, but I don't think it's taken the time to...

All good things must come to an end, and that of course includes the first season of Dune: Prophecy on HBO. After an exciting season that kicked off on Nov. 17, it's time to say farewell to the Sisterhood (hopefully just for now), but before fans can prepare themselves for the surely shocking season finale, we first have to find out exactly when we can tune into the final episode of the season.

In this week’s episode of Bingeworthy, host Mike DeAngelo ventures away from the desert sands of Arrakis and into the unknown with showrunner Alison Schapker, who helms the HBO series “Dune: Prophecy.” Set 10,000 years before the events of “Dune,” the prequel series explores the origins of the Bene Gesserit, following two Harkonnen sisters as they combat threats to humanity’s future. Starring Emily Watson, Mark Strong, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, and more, the show blends political intrigue, sprawling family dynamics, and the grandeur of Frank Herbert’s iconic universe.

[This story contains major spoilers through Dune: Prophecy season one, episode four.]
For those whose Dune experience is limited to Denis Villeneuve’s two films, the latest episode of HBO’s prequel series Dune: Prophecy was likely a bit of a shock.
Not just because Travis Fimmel’s Desmond Hart incinerated several high-rankings members of imperial houses, and not just because Mother Superior Valya (Emily Watson) basically shouted her uncle to death. Instead, it’s because of two of the people who were opposite Hart and Valya in this episode: Harrow and Evgeny of House Harkonnen, the deadliest house in the known Dune universe.
Played by Edward Davis and Game of Thrones star Mark Addy, respectively, the two Harkonnens could not be more different from one another in appearance and personality. But the distinction is even greater when compared against Vladimir Harkonnen and his nephew Feyd-Rautha, played in Villeneuve’s movies by Stellan Skarsgard and Austin Butler.

The latest episode of Dune: Prophecy, "Twice Born," climaxes with an exciting scene during a meeting of the Landsraad, the group of great houses who together control the direction of the Imperium. It does not go how we expect. Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), the new attack dog of Emperor Corrino (Mark Strong) makes a public show of using his powers of immolation to execute several people who have broken the sacred prohibition against thinking machines. It's a grisly display of power that will have the great houses thinking twice before they cross the emperor.
Desmond also foils a plot to blow up the whole meeting hatched by a group of rebels, including House Corrino's own swordmaster Kieran Atreides (Chris Mason). And on top of that, the emperor's own daughter Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) calls out her dad in public for being complicit in the death of her fiancée Pruitt Richese back in the premiere episode.

The visions, witchy powers and imperial intrigue continue in Dune: Prophecy episode 4. But what does it all amount to? Our review:
Nb: In line with Film Stories policy, the following review is certified spoiler-free for Dune: Prophecy episode 4.
We’re four episodes in, and we haven’t talked about Dune: Prophecy’s opening title sequence. As made-for-tv introductions go, it’s a good one: a teasing montage of the imagery and themes that we’ll see throughout the series. There’s the frozen carcass of a hairy space whale, the gaping maw of a sandworm, subtle knives and baroque thrones. It’s atmospheric stuff, and could be described as a more sedate version of the stunning, Saul Bass-from-hell title sequence that opened David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
I bring up those opening titles because they do the same thing the show’s often done so far: tease dark,...

Dune: Prophecy is firing on pretty much every cylinder it has in its fourth episode, "Twice Born." The plot moves forward, the twists keep coming, and the character work is solid. That doesn't seem to have translated into this Dune prequel becoming a runaway hit, but it's enough for me.
Let's start with our B-plot on Wallach IX, where young Sister Emeline (Aoife Hinds) goes for a nighttime sleepwalk only to nearly take her own life in front of that weird reflecting pool in the school's courtyard, driven by some mysterious force. Sister Jen (Faoileann Cunningham) is there to wake her up. In fact, all of the young Bene Gesserit sisters-in-training were having nightmares, although Jen claims to be immune. To get the bottom of things, Tula (Olivia Williams) gives them all spice pellets and guides them in an art therapy exercise designed to help them remember what they saw.

Big things are about to happen on Dune: Prophecy, as the HBO prequel series enters the back half of its six-episode season this Sunday. That’s the buzz from several cast members and an executive producer who cited the fourth episode as a favorite.
The official synopsis for the episode “Twice Born” tells us that after nearly all the acolytes have the same nightmare, Reverend Mother Tula (Olivia Williams) attempts to understand the origins of their dreams. Mother Superior Valya meanwhile sets in motion her plan to redeem House Harkonnen.

Dune: Prophecy takes a very interesting time in the timeline of the Dune Universe to adapt. Given that the part of the story that the show is adapting has little to no direct source material, such that it picks up after the events of Navigators of Dune, but before the events of Dune: House Atreides.

Episode 2 of Dune: Prophecy closed out with a face-off between what are widely viewed as the show's most interesting characters, and it looks like the shocking developments that followed have taken their toll on Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson).
Spoilers follow.
Towards the end of "Two Wolves," Valya returned to Salusa Secundus to find herself confronted by the enigmatic Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), who had previously admitted to using his strange pyrotechnic abilities to murder both Revered Mother Kasha (Jinhae) and the young Pruwet Richese (Charlie Hodson-Prior).
Upon learning that Hart - who apparently survived being swallowed by a sandworm on Arrakis - had made it his mission to wipe out the Sisterhood entirely, Valya uses "the Voice" to command the soldier to plunge his own dagger into his throat. Incredibly, Hart manages to resist the order.
"I always wondered what your greatest fear would be," he responds. "Now I have seen it.

“Dune: Prophecy” is picking up the pace in Episode 2 — and gradually revealing more about the show’s villain (and antihero).
After expositional duty and climactic finale to Episode 1, “Two Wolves” is distinctly more focused, written by Kor Adana and directed by John Cameron. All the key characters on Wallach IX and Salusa Secundus are wrapped up in the aftermath of Pruwet (Charlie Hodson-Prior) and Kasha’s (Jihae) sudden, horrific deaths — and already using others’ grief to manipulate them and steal power.

In the series premiere of Dune: Prophecy, "The Hidden Hand," we meet a number of characters playing their part in the never-ending battle to control the Imperium. Reverance Mother Kasha (Jihae) is the personal truthsayer of the emperor himself (Mark Strong), and is working behind the scenes to get the emperor's daughter Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) into a position where she can one day become empress herself. Ynez is sympathetic towards the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, of which Kasha is a part. And the Bene Gesserit are nothing if not self-advancing.
To that end, Kasha has talked the emperor into letting Ynez marry a young boy named Pruwet Richese (Hodson Prior), the heir to a powerful house. By the end of the episode, both Kasha and Preset are dead, burned from the inside out by new arrival Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), who wants to lessen the influence of the Bene Gesserit throughout the known universe.

The streaming platform Max is known for its brilliant library of movies as it is the streaming home to some of the biggest film features. However, you don’t want to sleep on Max’s TV content! From Dune: Prophecy to House of the Dragon, there’s something for everyone on the service.
If you don’t already have a Max subscription, you’re missing out on quality rich series. The stories are engaging, clever, and feature a star-studded talented cast. I can sing its praises all day, but no streamer is perfect. Max is one of my favorite services, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have any bad apples. The majority of Max’s content is great, but in our list below we also highlight the shows we would rather skip.
The Last of Us and Succession, for example, need to be on your to-watch list if...
