You might expect casting news to come from a podcast about movies, but you don.t really expect to see it happen quite like this. The news has broken that stand-up comedian Steve Agee may have scored a sweet new role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. This came out because he apparently wasn.t able to attend his previously scheduled podcast recording due to the scheduling conflict. On the most recent episode of comedian Doug Benson.s Doug Loves Movies podcast, the host informed his audience and other guests that the reason Agee was not there was because he had something else a little bigger going on. He said: [Steve] just found out because he.s in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he has to shoot that bullshit instead of being here with us today. As a comedian, Steve Agee has done cameo and guest appearance in more...

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, musical artists like Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Steely Dan, Toto, Hall and Oates, and dozens of others regularly popped up on each other's records, creating a golden era of smooth-music collaboration.

In the famously cute closing moments of Guardians of the Galaxy, we see the newly replanted baby Groot dancing, but trying to keep Drax from seeing him. Why didn’t he want Drax to see him boogie in his little flower pot? James Gunn explains.
In the hit Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy, the repetitious tree-man Groot seems to meet a lethal fate but at the end, we see a reborn and replanted version of Groot in a small flower pot, alive and getting his groove on. Baby Groot is seen dancing adorably to the Jackson 5 song “I Want You Back.” The most amusing part is that he tries so hard to keep Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) from seeing him get his wooden swerve on.
Some fans have wondered why baby Groot didn’t want Drax to see him dance. Well, director James Gunn has the answer to that.

Just in case any of you Guardians of the Galaxy fans forgot about Baby Groot, he's back to remind you of his adorable existence. Now that you've got him back on the brain, remember the end of the film when the sentient tree creature got his moment in the spotlight as he danced to Jackson 5's "I Want You Back?" But what was with Drax trying to catch him? Why would Baby Groot not let Drax see him dance? That's what we're about to find out. In a recent sit down with Doug Benson for his podcast Doug Loves Movies (h/t ComicBook.com), James Gunn received some questions about the totally awesome and now-iconic Baby Groot dancing scene—specifically about what the deal was between the tree-like creature's not letting the Drax the Destroyer see him bust a move. Here' ...

Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in TrainwreckPhoto: Universal Pictures With Sundance just wrapping up and Berlin starting up in a few days, we are now immersed in the year-long barrage of film festivals. One such festival in South By Southwest. A few weeks back they announced the first seven films of their program, including the opening night film Brand: A Second Coming. Today, they have revealed the rest of the features to be shown in March (except for the midnight program), and some of it has me very excited. The bigger titles announced do not do much for me. Paul Feig's Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart starrer Get Hard leave a lot to be desired in terms of anticipation, as does a work in progress cut of Judd Apatow's latest film Trainwreck. I'm guessing an Apatow work in progress is probably around three and a half hours.

Recently, L.A.'s Cinefamily held a public broadcasting of the Golden Globes featuring Doug Benson and other piss-takers, wisecracking throughout the event a la Mystery Science Theater. The afternoon was full of laughs and genuine collective enthusiasm for the films celebrated by the awards. One could certainly gauge the real winners in the theater's public eye. During the presentation for Best Foreign Film category, when the nominees were listed, no film was met with as many cheers as Swedish writer/director Ruben Östlund's Force Majeure. Similarly, when the accolades were instead given to Leviathan, no award in the entire ceremony was met with such violent booing and hissing as the Force Majeure upset, which felt like the unforgivable snub of the evening. It would only be fair...

While taking part in Doug Benson's Doug Loves Movies podcast sometime this week, James Gunn broke out some dance moves that inspired the most celebrated scene in Guardians of the Galaxy. Some of you might know this already, but here's a cool piece of Guardians of the Galaxy trivia: writer/director James Gunn was the motion capture model for the great end sequence of dancing baby Groot. He told Yahoo last year:
“Baby Groot dancing is 100 percent me. I was too embarrassed for anyone to be there, so I made everyone leave the room and I set up a camera and I videotaped myself dancing. Then I sent the video to the animators and had them animate over that. I begged them not to leak the video! Two of my closest friends came to an early screening and said ‘Hey, I recognize those moves! That’s you dancing isn’t it?!’”

People stop me all the time to say they enjoy hearing me on Doug Loves Movies. It makes me realize how much I owe Doug Benson, not only for using my Movie Guide to create The Leonard Maltin Game, but for allowing me to appear on his popular podcast—even though I am terrible at playing the game! Still, I have fun every time I appear on the show, in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Ucb Theater in Los Angeles. On October 21st, Chris Hardwick will attempt to take over late night cable TV. The Nerdist creator will host @midnight, a new game show on Comedy Central produced by Funny or Die. Each @midnight episode (Comedy Central has ordered four to start) features three comedian contestants to whom Hardwick will feed a stream of funny, weird, sad, and/or ridiculous social media videos, images, and posts. For each item, the contestant who can come up with the funniest quip, caption, or commentary will score points given out by Hardwick. The format is reminiscent of a Write Now!, which aired on Nerdist about a year ago and also featured three comedians competing to write the best jokes on the spot. "It's very British at heart," said Hardwick. "It's really just a structured reason to bring comics together to make fun of all the topical things they saw that day that came up in various social-media outlets.

A few days ago, I’d never been to an Alamo Drafthouse location, whereas I’ve now spent hours upon hours inside of one. I was in comically close proximity to roughly 2,000 people over the last week, the same 2,000 people. I had to not get even remotely awestruck when I walked into the men’s bathroom at the Lakeline Drafthouse in Austin, Texas, and Elijah Wood walked by me to exit. Or Doug Benson. Or Pat Healy. Or Harry Knowles. They’re all real! I can prove it, even if I didn’t speak to any of them.
Yes, Fantastic Fest 2013 is now in the history books. (Well, after tonight, at least, with the closing night selection The Zero Theorem, from director Terry Gilliam. But like the rest of you, I’ll have to wait to watch it at a later date.) From last Thursday to Monday, I watched 26 films at Fantastic Fest.

Downtown La is ready to chill. And dance. And sway. And chill some more. Fyf Fest is back this Saturday and Sunday at La's State Historic Park. We remember when the It guy at our last job was the only one talking about this local music festival. Now eight years deep, the Fuck Yeah Festival draws in more and more crowds each year.
While the biggest names are the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Mgmt, TV On The Radio and My Bloody Valentine, we don't need to tell you what you already know. Those bands are headlining, the crowds will be there. There are many ways to navigate, or experience, San Diego Comic-Con International. This year I was an Official Guest and the subject of a Spotlight Panel, which was quite nice, but I also spent time in the crush of humanity on the exhibition floor. Anyone watching "Skywire" on Discovery Channel on Sunday noticed something: Nik Wallenda certainly has a strong belief in Jesus.
During his 1,500-foot high climb on a two-inch wire across a gorge near the Grand Canyon, Wallenda was heard praying to Jesus quite often. From the files of hilarious real talk, here's Seth Rogen discussing "The Guilt Trip" during an appearance on Doug Benson's podcast, "Doug Loves Movies":

Welcome back to another edition of Kickstart This, FirstShowing's weekly column dedicated to spreading the word about cool indie projects that need your help to become a reality. This week, we're featuring a ridiculous new horror project influenced by slasher horror movies from the 1980s called Dude Bro Party Massacre 3. It's the first feature-length (horror) movie from the folks at 5 Second Films, who you likely know from their quick comedy videos they've been making every day for the last five years. Take a look at their pitch video below, leave a comment with your thoughts, and don't forget to donate if you can. Check it! If you're not familiar with 5 Second Films, they're a comedy troupe of 20-somethings based out of Los Angeles who have worked with awesome people like Patton Oswalt, Doug Benson, Eddie Pepitone, "Weird Al" Yankovic, and tons more. They've been featured in the pages of Wired,...

The rise of the internet has opened up another avenue for creative forces to distribute their output and gain fans, and comedy has been no exception. One of the groups that has successfully taken advantage of the new medium is the comedy troupe 5secondfilms. Built on the concept of making and releasing a comedic short that’s 5 seconds or less every weekday, the group has found themselves working with luminaries such as Andrew Wk, Weird Al Yankovic, Doug Benson, and Patton Oswalt, while finding wider success themselves, with troupe member Jon Worley now a writer for the critically acclaimed FX show Justified. While the group has, however, made some longer films, they have never moved past the short film format. With their next effort, however, the troupe is intent on breaking into the feature film world, expanding the popular mock trailer for Dude Bro Party Massacre 3 into a full length film.

The upcoming I'm Vlogging Here documentary won't be the only film to delve into the lives of professional YouTubers. Creator Dan Dobi has released Please Subscribe, where he tracks the lives of eight popular YouTubers as they make their videos, interact with their fans, and discuss the ways in which online video has changed their lives. Please Subscribe tracks eight different creators, each one with his or her own path to success. The collection of stars--Daily Grace, Dan Brown, Hannah Hart, Mitchell Davis, MysteryGuitarMan, SeaNanners, TheWillofDC, and Wheezy Waiter--all have unique perspectives, if the documentary's trailer is to be believed. The film will be released through the pay-to-view Chill platform, where it joins other notable projects such as recent specials from comedians Maria Bamford and Doug Benson. An HD download is available for $9.99, with a t-shirt bundle available for an extra ten bucks. To Dobi, who also sports a YouTube channel of his own,...

The Godfather of Sound on Sight, Ricky D., and I were recently conversing through email when he broached the topic of me writing an article about the ten best film related podcasts. For those who don’t know me very well I am a big fan of the medium of podcasting when it comes to film. I love good discussion about the world of film, as well as interesting insight about the art form that I am so endeared with. A couple of years ago I began a trek, on my blog, through every single film related podcast I could find. The goal was to experience as much film discussion as I could and to separate the wheat from the chaff. The trek is still ongoing, but at this point I feel like I have a decent handle on what the very best film related podcasts are out of the ones I have listened to.

So Jon Hamm may or may not have revealed his version of the Taylor Swift-losing-face at last weekend's SAG Awards when he was passed up (again) for his work on Mad Men. But who cares! Because look at that face. We're not sure exactly why Don Draper was mugging Tony Danza (comedian Doug Benson tweeted the picture along with the caption, "Jon Hamming it up with Tony!") but who cares? Because look at that face. In summary: Jon Hamm is adorable and we don't care if he loses at every award show because he'll always be Most Handsome in our hearts.

Man candy and all-around good guy Jon Hamm had previously professed his admiration for the '70s sitcom "Taxi" when he hilariously freestyled about it on Reggie Watts' show "Comedy Bang! Bang!" last year.
Meanwhile, his love for "Taxi" star Tony Danza just keeps growing.
Hamm, who last night lost the SAG Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series to Bryan Cranston (from "Breaking Bad"), posed for this lovely, dreamy photo with Tony Danza. Err.. Rather, Tony Danza's poster.
We hope this poster is hanging in Jon Hamm's real-life bedroom.
Comedian Doug Benson posted it to his Twitter account earlier today:

This month, our community collectively said goodbye for a while to the flagship Alamo Drafthouse location and home of press screenings, special events, festivals like SXSW and aGLIFF Polari, and the two most dear in my heart: Butt-Numb-a-Thon and Fantastic Fest.
I have countless memories of this place, beginning with my first screening there eight years ago: Robin Williams in The Big White, the first screening of the first Fantastic Fest in 2005. I've likely seen more movies in this cinemaplex than in all the other theaters I've visited in my life combined. Certainly more than I dare attempt to count, though an average of 30 films each year for Fantastic Fest plus the five 24-hour Butt-Numb-a-Thons would equal roughly 600 hours, or 25 solid days of films watched there before we even started on SXSW, aGLIFF or any of the other shows.
No single word or phrase is sufficient to capture the significance of this place.

It’s been a while since I paid a visit to the live taping of Doug Benson’s popular podcast Doug Loves Movies, so I did just that last week and found myself on a panel with Chris Evans (Captain America himself) and Adam Scott (of Parks and Recreation). Ever since Doug devised The Leonard Maltin Game, in which contestants try to guess the identity of a movie based on the cast names listed in Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide—in reverse order—it’s been common knowledge that I am one of its poorest players. My mind just doesn’t sort information that way… or possibly my brain is melting after seeing too many movies. But I always have a good time when I...

Kansas City, Mo. -- Scenes of Tom Cruise filled the big screen, but the moviegoers packed inside a Missouri theater focused their attention on the action playing out away from the film: Three local actors and comics cracking jokes about the star's height, his fervent belief in Scientology and some of his cinematic shortcomings.
When it comes to movie theater etiquette, talking back to the screen is right up there with glowing and ringing cellphones and crying babies as no-no's. But now, some comedy crews inspired by the 90's cult TV show "Mystery Science Theater 3000" are making the heckles acceptable – provided the movie is cringe-worthy and the jokes non-stop.
The focus of the jokes at Kansas City's Screenland Slams on this particular Saturday night was Cruise's turn in 1985's "Legend," a Ridley Scott-directed romantic fantasy starring a young Cruise as a forest dweller battling the Lord of Darkness and his goblin henchmen.

Amy Schumer was the first comedian to get a crack at Roseanne on Sunday's Comedy Central Roast, but before she went after the famous television mom (and presidential candidate) she had a message for Roastmaster Jane Lynch:
"Eat a dick, Jane... Try it."
To be fair, Lynch had just introduced Schumer by saying, "let's get her out of the way," so she had it coming.
Since she's a relative newcomer to roasting — and a young, attractive woman — the majority of jokes lobbed at Schumer were of the who are you and who did you blow to get here ilk. But the 31-year-old comedian proved that she could both take the heat and deliver it on last year's Roast Of Charlie Sheen. She also proved that she could weather the attacks of angry twitter users, after her infamous Steve-o joke:
"I'm sorry for the loss of your friend Ryan Dunn.

Colt Cabana has one of the most unique jobs in the world: comedic pro wrestler. When he's not busy dishing out punches and bodyslams for rabid crowds, he's making them laugh with his patented brand of slapstick. And this week, he's got to perform in front of one of the most intimidating crowds in the world: the Gathering of the Juggalos, the yearly summer music festival hosted by the notorious hip hop act, the Insane Clown Posse. Thousands of fans with painted faces will be heading to the sweltering heat of Cave-In-Rock, Illinois, for five days of Faygo soda, nudity and illegal substances -- and it's Cabana's job to play the villain as a marijuana-hating police officer.

Doug Benson is known for making jokes on a handful of topics: pop culture, Twitter, and smoking lots and lots of weed. He’s a busy man, performing stand-up, recording his podcast Doug Loves Movies, continuing his quest to parody every Morgan Spurlock documentary, etc., but Benson never fails to bring his act back to marijuana. Surprisingly, Benson’s fanbase is varied; they’re not all stoners. His drug-induced humor is uber-goofy, and pop culture appeals to everyone. Some of these fans like to claim that Benson would be a perfect comedian, if not for the weed.
Benson is setting these theories to rest. In Smug Life, one will find two discs, cryptically titled “Uncooked” and “Cooked.” The gag is that the discs have mostly the same jokes, but Doug Benson performs one as sober as possible and the other totally high. As Benson puts it, now you can to be the “judge,...

Everyone knows talking in a movie theater is totally obnoxious. We go to the movies to get lost in a good story, not to listen to some rude d-bag yapping at the screen like these guys, right? That’s usually the idea. But with ticket sales declining in the past few years, some theater owners have discovered that sometimes letting people yell at the movie screen might actually not be such a terrible idea—and in some cases, might even enhance the experience. “I’m always cracking jokes when I watch movies, either with friends or alone, so why not do both with an audience?...

Only one more week until the "Avengers" assemble in theaters! We've been ready to don a pair of Iron Man 3-D glasses since the announcement that a movie was in the works (and the announcement that Iron Man 3-D glasses were a real thing!).
But we've been able to compose our excitement as Marvel released tons of clips, posters and movie stills to tide us over until May 4. One of our favorite pre-released scenes is when Iron Man confronts Loki and reminds him exactly who he's up against. Actor Tom Hiddleston, who plays Thor's scorned brother, tweeted a picture of his script from that very scene and it features our favorite line, too! He wrote, "Here's a fun & familiar excerpt from my copy of Joss Whedon's #Avengers screenplay. #theyhaveahulk #s--- #notideal." It's easy to see why Hiddleston is turning into one of our favorite tweeters.

Sunday (April 22) marks the 42nd annual celebration of Earth Day, an event meant to bring awareness to environmental causes, and the stars took to Twitter to spread their eco-minded messages.
Alicia Silverstone tweeted out a gallery of animal images from her site The Kind Life (wonder if chewing your kid's food for him is also environmentally friendly somehow ...), while celebs like comedian Doug Benson had a less earnest take on the day.
Check out some of the tweets:
Nick Lachey: "happy earth day to everyone. this is the only planet we've got, so we better take good care of her!! let's all do our part. #earthday"
Kevin McHale: "Happy #earthday!! we only have 1!"
Britney Spears: "Happy Earth Day! My kids love Rainforest Cafe, therefore let's support the rainforest!"
Marlee Matlin: "Happy Earth Day, Earth mommas and poppas, earth kiddies and earth animals. Celebrate the beautiful planet...

Dick Clark, the pioneering TV host of American Bandstand, passed away this morning after suffering a heart attack. We’ll have a complete obituary of America’s Oldest Teenager over on VH1 Tuner. But here, we’re focusing our attention on the outpouring of remembrances from a not-so-surprisingly wide variety of celebrities on Twitter. The New Year’s Rockin’ Eve host touched a lot of lives. First up, naturally, is this reaction from the man who took the New Year’s reins from him, Ryan Seacrest.
Other broadcasters, from Al Roker to MTV alum Dave Holmes, were also saddened by the news.
And there were, of course a number of musicians, from Hanson to Snoop Dogg, mourning the man who helped make popular music a mainstay on TV.
Adding a touch of humor to the RIPs was comedian Doug Benson, who had a pretty good, if irreverent suggestion:
