Winnie Liu (Hui-Wen Liu) is a Taiwanese media composer, sound designer, a cellist actively engaged in film, game, live theater, and pop music industry. Specializing in string instruments and electronic synths, she elevates visual and theatrical experiences by focusing on sound texture and emotional structures. She enjoys delving into contemporary social issues and the convergence of modern/traditional culture across various creative formats such as film, theater, exhibitions, and experimental art.
One of her notable projects, the experimental interactive music and dance "Drifting Roots," where she served as a project producer and composer, was chosen for the 2023 C-LAB Sound Festival "Diversonics" in Taiwan. Hosted in a 49.4-channel speakers sound lab with support from the French institute IRCAM, it also garnered recognition at the 2023 Taipei Fringe Festival, earning the Fringe Space Award. Additionally, her score for the experimental film "Pacify", won the best first short in the Experimental Forum Film Festival. She was one of the composers involved in the 2021 Chinese-language Silent Films Composition Project "Love and Duty", organized by C-LAB Taiwan Sound Lab (TSL) and Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute.
Winnie holds a BFA in Cello Performance from National Sun Yat-sen University and an MFA in Music Composition for the Screen from Columbia College Chicago. Currently based in Los Angeles.
