Who's the next big thing in horror? - 1st Annual Edition

The horror genre is known for being the genre in which plenty of up and coming talents have been discovered. Why don't we take a look: Margot Kidder and Bob Clark of Black Christmas, Cory Monteith in Killer Bash, Shannon Elizabeth in Jack Frost, Brandon Fehr in Final Destination, and so on and so on.

With this first annual edition, I wanted to bring some attention to slightly unknown talent that's been making waves or has the potential to do so in the horror community. Anybody in this talented lineup has the potential to become a breakthrough star in my opinion and I wanted to highlight that. I fully believe in the talent of each person that's here on this list. These are the ones you might not have heard of yet, but you should be keeping an eye out on them......

Fright Flick (A review - New to video this week)

2011 - 93 mins. - Not Rated

D: Israel Luna

C: Chad Allen, Richard Curtin, Todd Jenkins, Daphne Khoury, Adam Kitchen, Charles Baker, Tom Zembrod

The cast and crew of a low budget horror film is murdered by a psychotic killer who videotapes the murders and fashions them in the same way of a script that some of the crew is working on secretly.

Entertaining combination of behind the scenes spoof, valentine to Friday the 13th and all of the ripoffs that came out shortly afterwards with a dash of Scream thrown in. Fright Flick features spot on humor that sends up what happens on the set of a low budget horror film from the colorful personalities involved, to the sometimes laughable casting decisions, to the fact of how someone can have one job today and being serving another job function the next day. The film's plentiful death sequences wonderfully pay tribute

DVD and Blu-Ray Releases: January 25th - Costas Mandylor in Dead Space

So the day has come for you folks to take home Costas Mandylor in the final chapter of the phenomenon that is Saw! Well, at least until the inevitable reboot. Even cooler...if the jolly red-suited fatman brought you a 3D television last month, you can watch this puppy in its gory 3D glory, too.

Another franchise that is buzzing this week is the video game sequel, Dead Space 2. In addition to the game itself, you can also bring home the collector's edition, the album soundtrack, a hardcover game guide, and an animated DVD movie. That should keep you busy for a while.

Oh yeah, there are a couple of other interesting titles with some familiar faces from "True Blood", "Angel", "Buffy", and even "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman".

Saw: The Final Chapter (Blu-ray Review)

Directed by Kevin Greutert

Starring Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Betsy Russell, Sean Patrick Flanery, Cary Elwes,

Fright Flick and Laughing at Horror: A Movie Review

*This review for the satirish Fright Flick has been written by co-writer Ed Sum.

**Full disclosure: a DVD of this film was provided by Breaking Glass Pictures.

Director: Israel Luna.

Writers: Todd Jenkins (story), and Israel Luna (story).

Just imagine what happens when everyone, including their own grandma, has their own agenda and there is a movie within a movie going on at the same time. Israel Luna's Fright Flick gives some interesting satire in his look at the dirty goings on in making a low budget movie.

He puts the slick and grease back behind what's always been imagined in the slime and grime of wannabes with high egos, who are trying to make that big break. This film revolves around a low-grade slasher flick that turns b-grade when the production team starts making a sequel to their product and certain members are being killed for real and for unknown reasons.

A Good Reason to Be "Bitter" This New Year and More New DVDs

  • IFC
A Good Reason to Be
A look at what's new on DVD today:

"Bitter Feast"

Directed by Joe Maggio

Released by Mpi Home Video

When a food critic ("Humpday"'s Justin Leonard) takes a butcher knife to the restaurant of a celebrity chef (James LeGros), the chef plots the ultimate revenge in this gory satirical thriller from director Joe Maggio. (My review from the Los Angeles Film Festival is here.)

"Case 39"

Directed by Christian Alvart

Released by Paramount

2010 is probably a year best forgotten by Renee Zellweger, who not only appeared in the execrable "My Own Love Song," which went straight to Netflix, but also this thriller that was filmed in 2006, but didn't see a release until last fall. Zellweger stars as a social worker whose latest case involving a child (Jodelle Ferland) that she believes is a victim of abuse leads to something far more terrifying. Bradley Cooper and Ian McShane co-star.

This is the week you may want to think about using up those giftcards and cash you got from returning your holiday presents. “Ticked-off Trannies With Knives” (DVD Review)
The legendary blues singer Koko Taylor once recorded a song titled “I Can Love You Like A Woman or I Can Fight You Like a Man.” That could have been the theme song for this cool and gritty homage to both grindhouse movies and revenge flicks, written and directed by Israel Luna and available on DVD from Breaking Glass Pictures. When the film debuted, it set off howls of outrage from the transgender community who felt it misrepresented them. Well, to paraphrase one of the best lines from the very funny script, “Let’s get some balloons for your pity party, bitch.”

From the director of Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives, comes Fright Flick

Director Israel Luna (Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives) shows audiences just how cut-throat show business can be in this bloody horror / satire of the filmmaking industry.

When the air-headed leading lady of a B-grade fright flick turns up brutally murdered during the shoot, the motley members of the ca...st and crew find themselves at the heart of a real-life whodunit. The list of suspects is long, considering everyone on set will do anything to be on top. Featuring gay icon Chad Allen (Ice Blues, Hollywood, je t'aime) alongside an outrageous cast of characters -- from the eccentric director, to the bitter supporting actress, to the scheming production assistants -- Fright Flick keeps the laughs and the screams rolling with a sinful combination of wit, suspense and comic-book-style gore.

Fright Flick is due for a DVD release on January 25, 2011. Special features are still unknown at this time. Please stay tuned for further developments.

Interview with director Israel Luna of Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives

The chicks; Krystal Summers, Erica Andrews, Jenna Skyy, Kelexis Davenport and Willam Belli, of Israel Luna's horror / revenge / exploitation opus Ticked- Off Trannies with Knives got something extra in store. To my surprise and enjoyment, I found Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives to be the place for some transaction as the film deals with a group of transgender women who are violently beaten by three straight guys and left for dead. After regaining consciousness, the violated vixens turn deadly divas. With their new found confidence and courage, the ticked-off trannies slice their way to vengeance. Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives transcends any translucent transparent film out there. You don't need a translator to be transfixed and transformed by this tranquilizing, transfixing slab of a motion picture. "A transploitation revenge fantasy!" Here's what director Israel Luna had to say.

So who is Israel Luna and what are you all about?

I'm just

Fright Flick to Satirize Horror on DVD January 25th

Independent director Israel Luna (Ticked off Trannies with Knives) is taking his horror a step further in his latest film entitled Fright Flick. This film has played on the film festival circuit earlier this year, with several awards given for Luna's hard work and attention to gore. Now, the film is moving to DVD January 25th through Breaking Glass Pictures.

The film is a satire of the independent horror filmmaking business. Several cast and crew members find themselves in a real life horror situation, when murders turn up after the director yells: "cut!" The release will host an assortment of bonus features including a blooper reel, a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, and a photo gallery. More details to come.

The plot line is here:

"Fright Flick shows audiences just how cut-throat show business can be in this bloody, outrageous horror-comedy that satirizes the filmmaking industry. When the air-headed leading lady

Fright Flick is written and directed by Israel Luna and stars Chad Allen, Richard Curtin, Todd Jenkins, and more and is being described as "the quintessential campy, who-dunnit flick that reveals how everyone is just dying to be in the movie business ... though it may cost them an arm and a leg!"
