“Bareilly Ki Barfi is a film strewn with splendid moments” – Subhash K Jha Review

Bareilly Ki Barfi

Starring Ayushmann Khurana, Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon

Directed by Ashiwini Iyer Tiwari

Early in the plot, we are told that the film’s heroine Bitti is no Sati Savitri. Thank God for small town mercies! In fact she adheres to another kind of stereotyping that Hindi cinema has lately embraced. You know, the small town girl who is hip and happy, sassy and sexy, rides two-wheelers and smokes whenever she can get her hands on a cancer stick, and when a prospective groom asks her if she is a virgin Bitti retorts, “No I am not… are you?”

Ah, long live the virgin bride.

Bitti is from the same feisty school of small-town rebellion as Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met, Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu and Alia Bhatt in Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya. In fact, what Bitti thinks to be streaks of rebellion (breakdancing, watching angrezi films,

‘Jagga Jasoos’ Review: Ambitious Disney Comedy-Adventure Succeeds Despite Occasional Misfires

‘Jagga Jasoos’ Review: Ambitious Disney Comedy-Adventure Succeeds Despite Occasional Misfires
While promoting writer/director Anurag Basu’s “Jagga Jasoos,” leading man Ranbir Kapoor offered a vibrant description of the multi-year process of making the film: “It was like we were fleas on the back of a mad dog who was trying to cross a very busy highway.”

The accuracy of Kapoor’s statement comes into sharp focus about two hours into the 182-minute feature, as the action-comedy-adventure Disney co-production hurtles us from Purulia and Ukhrul in India, to Moombaka and Shundi in Africa, and we begin to feel increasingly overwhelmed as we try to work out exactly how we got from place to random place. Basu’s exceedingly ambitious storytelling vision is the kind that most creatives in Bollywood might never even dare (let alone carry out), but it’s a double-edged sword responsible for the film’s most memorable moments, but also for often losing grasp of the narrative
