The only south Indian film in BFI’s top 10 Indian films, one of the first crowd funded films in Malayalam language and the last film by the legendary director John Abraham, “Amma Ariyan” is a landmark in Malayalam and Indian cinema. Leading a radical life, the director also tries to include his radicalism into his films. The mixture of fiction, documentary and self aware cinema works brilliantly like never before.

“Amma Ariyan” follows Purushan, who’s preparing to leave for Delhi for his research. While travelling in Wayanad, he meets some policemen who are carrying an unidentified dead body found hanging on the wayside. Even though he can’t recognize the dead man, he feels he’s very familiar with that face. The thought makes him restless, subsequently leading into an obsession for finding out whoever that is. He abandons his trip to Delhi and meets with several of his

Hollywood's Hellboy scares new releases, John's gets a raw deal!

All the bunched new releases of the week, Saurabh Shukla and Nandita Das?s Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai, ?Vivek Agnihotri?s The Tashkent Files, Paharganj etc got off to a dull to very ordinary starts and it was (comparatively speaking), Hollywood venture, Hellboy that was the best of the lot, even though its opening was nothing to rave about. From amongst the new releases only The Tashkent Files has some chances of survival, based upon some positive reviews.

Meanwhile, Robbie Grewal?s John Abraham-Mouni Roy starrer, spy thriller R.A.W, which showed some promise during the opening weekend , stuttered after that resulting in a ?30 crore ?ordinary first week and unfortunately a failure tag.

Concluding with Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra starrer, Kesari, the ?task of touching the 150 crore mark (the first for an Akshay Kumar solso), looks onerous, if not impossible, more so with

“Romeo Akbar Walter (Raw) belongs to John Abraham” A Subhash K Jha Review

Romeo Akbar Walter(Raw)

Starring John Abraham, Mouni Roy, Jackie Shroff, Sikandar Kher

Directed by Robby Grewal

What makes them do it? No, I don’t mean the bravehearts like Meghna Gulzar and now Robby Grewal who dare to make films about those daredevils who risk their lives to act as Indian spies in Pakistan. But those unsung daredevils who sneak into Pakistan to glean information for their beloved motherland.

And what do they get for it finally?

Towards the end of this intelligently-written well-crafted espionage drama, our spy-hero’s boss, played with wizened aplomb by Jackie Shroff mumbles, “He gave preference to his motherland over his own mother.”

Did he, now?

And just a while back John Abraham’s Romeo/Akbar/Walter had made Shroff promise, “No matter what happens my Ammi must be looked after.”

So much for promises.

Raw hits those raw nerves that all patriotic cinema avoids.

Unfortunately ?Raw saw a below par 15-20 ?percent start ?and could not match up to the comparisons with a ?similar genre Raazi, as the film failed to impress the critics, apparently due to a weak script and screenplay. ?The first day appears to be around the 4.50 crore mark, give or take 50 lakhs. ?Having said that ?R.A.W. ?can still make amends during the upcoming weekend. ?The other release of the week,? This Friday will witness three varied genre releases, Robbie Grewal?s ?R.A.W, Omung Kumar?s Pm Narendra Modi and Oscar nominated Ashwin Kumar?s No Fathers In Kashmir.
