7 Times 'Ugly Betty' Editrix Wilhelmina Slater Was the Ultimate Feminist Icon

Say what you will about Wilhelmina Slater, the rightful heir to the Mode magazine throne on Ugly Betty, but you can't deny that she is the ultimate feminist icon. Wilhelmina, who is played perfectly by Vanessa Williams, had confidence, sass, and did not hesitate to let anyone, including her ~boss~ Daniel Meade know exactly how she felt. Nearly eight years after the finale of the ABC comedy, Wilhelmina's girl power attitude is more relevant than ever — and it's no surprise that Vanessa has gushed about playing the chic fashion mogul. "A lot of the stance, the carriage, and the facial expressions are where the real power lies. That’s what makes Wilhelmina great,” Vanessa told Entertainment Weekly in 2009. "Sometimes it’s just a look or a sigh or a roll of the eyes or a turn of the back, and that’s weighted enough. It’s been my favorite role of a lifetime,

‘Younger’ Star Michael Urie on Making His Drag Debut in 'Torch Song' and Staying True to Himself (Exclusive)

“We need to be heroes again,” Michael Urie tells Et before a full weekend of performances at Second Stage Theatre, where the Younger star is leading the first major New York revival of Torch Song Trilogy, Harvey Fierstein’s seminal play about gay life and identity in 1970s and early ’80s New York. “We had a president who was a hero for us,” Urie says, recalling the past eight years with Barack Obama. “Now we have to be the heroes again and stand up for who we are.”

That conviction is at the heart of Torch Song, which will open off-Broadway Oct. 19 and continue through Dec. 3. As the actor notes, the original production “actually changed people’s lives” when it premiered, first in three parts downtown and then on Broadway in 1982, when Urie was just 2 years old. (It has been revised and condensed to a more conventional length -- and renamed Torch Song -- for the new revival
