"The great Controller is locked inside you. Ready to break free?" One last look! Well Go USA has revealed a final official US trailer for the Korean epic action sci-fi movie Alienoid, opening in US theaters this week (starting August 26th). We already posted three other trailers for this movie before, but they keep hyping it up with more more more. A tale of two eras, Alienoid follows two Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) gurus seeking a legendary, time-bending blade as they unexpectedly cross paths with modern-era people hunting down a dangerous alien concealed inside a human's body. This sounds and looks awesome. The sci-fi action fantasy features a cast including Ryu Jun-yeol as the master swordsman, Kim Tae-ri as "a woman who shoots thunder", Kim Woo-bin, So Ji-seob, Yum Jung-ah, Kim Eui-eung, Lee Ha-nee, and Jo Woo-jin. I totally want to bring everyone I know to the theater to watch this when it plays this week.

Korea has never been a stranger to the horror genre, but it seems that in recent decades the country has been producing some high-quality horror movies and TV shows that deserve far larger audiences. While many audiences associate horror with visceral thrills that emphasize graphic violence and explicit supernatural elements, Korean horror is often typified by more character-driven stories, explorations of deeper themes, and pointed social commentary. There also tends to be a Korean horror film or TV show for any pop culture fan as there's quite a bit of genre mixing, from "intense crime horror" to "lighthearted romantic comedy horror" to "whimsical fantasy horror" and everything in between.
Unfortunately, there aren't very many Korean horror shows that are easily available in the U.S. yet, but the massive success of the Netflix Korean series "Squid Game" could hopefully spark international interest in Korean shows that dive into darker and more suspenseful subjects.

“It’s much easier for me defend you if I know the truth,” the lawyer (Kim Yunjin) says.
By this point, the big drama it over. The clamour of the press, the trial itself – and, of course, the murder. Yoo Min-ho (So Ji-seob), declared innocent but still under suspicion, has retreated to the family cabin high up in the mountains where he can escape from all the attention. It’s the place where he used to spend illicit hours with the dead woman, Kim Se-hee (Im Jin-ah), and it now serves as his sanctuary whilst he tries to get his head around the fact that new evidence has emerged and he might be prosecuted again.
He doesn’t know what the new evidence is. That’s partly why the lawyer is there. “I’m innocent,” he protests when she asks him what really happened, but she insists that nobody is ever completely innocent,...

Who doesn’t like a good murder mystery, especially one that keeps you on the edge of your seat guessing who the killer is until the credits roll? The Battleship Island, the historical action film, which premiered on July 26, was seen by over 970,000 viewers on its first day, setting a new record for the largest opening in Korean movie history. Accounting for 71.4% of all ticket sales, the film broke the record previously held by Tom Cruise’s The Mummy. The last Korean film to hold this record was 2016’s Train to Busan.
The World War II set film is directed by Ryoo Seung-wan (The Berlin File) and stars Song Joong-ki (from the popular K-drama Descendants of the Sun), So Ji-sub, Lee Jung-hyun and Hwang Jung-min. Its story of forced labor under Japanese occupation on the island of Hashima (nicknamed Battleship Island because of its shape resembling a warship), where a group of about 400 workers risk their lives to attempt an escape seems to have struck a chord with the Korean movie going population. "We leave no one behind!" Cj Entertainment has debuted another new official trailer for the war film titled Battleship Island, or also The Battleship Island, from director Ryoo Seung-wan. Set during the Japanese occupation of Korea in 1944, the film is about the 400+ Koreans that were conscripted into slave labor mining coal on an island known as "Battleship Island". The story goes that they attempted to band together and make an escape. The main cast includes Hwang Jung-min, So Ji-sub, Song Joong-ki and Lee Jung-hyun. The first teaser trailer we posted was already impressive, but this new trailer packs in tons of action and emotion. It's a strong sell for the film, I'm definitely curious about seeing this. Japanese media has been criticizing Ryoo Seung-wan‘s The Battleship Island even before its completion saying the film is depicting false facts and is “distorting” history between the two countries.
However, during a news conference for the film, Director Ryoo Seung-wan defends that it is a “fact-based fiction” which he studied himself. He made mention of the film’s depictions of the labourers and their setting which were in line with South Korean government reports released in 2012. Only the main characters’ dramatical stories were from his imagination.
Other than that, the director assures that once the film hits the theaters all Japanese concerns would dissipate as it is not meant to bring about nationalistic or anti-Japanese sentiments instead it is “more fundamentally about the mankind and war.”

"There cannot be a single witness who survives to tell what happened here." Cj Entertainment has released an impressive trailer for a war film titled Battleship Island, from director Ryoo Seung-wan. This looks like another strong anti-Japanese film from Korea - between this and The Age of Shadows, some Korean films these days seem to have a strong anti-Japanese agenda. Ryoo Seung-wan has been flying high since the massive success of 2015 cop thriller Veteran and he makes his return to Korean screens this summer with Battleship Island. A period action-drama set during the Japanese invasion of Korea, the film tells the story of roughly four hundred Koreans who escape the titular Battleship Island, a work camp they were forcibly relocated to. Hwang Jeong-min and So Ji-sub star and judging by the first trailer the film is a bit of a departure for Ryoo, one that incorporates large scale set pieces but is really far more focused on the characters and melodrama. In many ways Crying Fist would appear to be the closest thing to it in Ryoo's filmography, though the subject matter there was...

The world of Korean cinema saw one of it’s strongest recent years in 2016. Some of the most influential and renowned directors made a comeback with exceptionally strong work; this list includes: Park Chan-wook with his film, “The Handmaiden,” and the very popular Kim Jee-woon, who came out with “The Age of Shadows.” Hollywood was also a major proponent in the overall strength in the 2016 Korean box office results. Films like, “The Age of Shadows,” and “The Wailing,” both had strong backing from Hollywood, which boosted their national, and international, excitement.
The list of upcoming 2017 films looks just as strong:

This is the tenth film review in the coverage of Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival. There certainly was a time when filmmakers from mainland China didn't dabble too much in making blockbusters. Obviously, Sophie's Revenge looks like score of other romantic comedies you've seen. However, it's a rather entertaining film.
Sophie (Zhang Ziyi), a comic book artist/writer, has been in relation with Jeff (Ji-seob So), a surgeon, for two years. While they were supposed to get married, Jeff falls for Joanna (Bingbing Fan), a movie star, after he had operated her. Obviously, Sophie is devastated and she doesn't want to face her mom who organized the mariage. Sophie also intends to publish a comic book targetting women. With this book,...

[Our thanks to Charles Webb for the following review.]
In this Ki-duk Kim penned filmmaking drama, hot-headed actor Su-ta (Ji-hwan Kang) has to turn to charismatic gangster Gang-pae (Ji-seob So) to co-star in his latest film after injuring his latest co-lead. In exchange for appearing in the film, the gangster demands that the fights they perform be real – and that the outcomes not be constrained by the script. This intriguing premise had the potential to explore the connections between film and the realities they create but instead becomes something incredibly pedestrian by film’s end.
