“Runtime,” published in 2016, is the story of the Minerva Challenge, a cybernetic race across the Sierra Nevadas, and how one underprivileged young woman cobbles together enough technology to compete against rivals with corporate sponsors. The key character — Marmeg Guinto — uses parts she found in rich people’s garbage and spent the money her mother wanted her to use for nursing school to enter the race. But the Minerva Challenge is the only chance she has at a better life for herself and her younger brothers, and she’s ready to risk it all.

‘OpTic Gaming: Making of eSports Champions’ Movie in the Works (Exclusive)

Producers John Sacchi and Matt Groesch have acquired movie and TV rights to the book “OpTic Gaming: The Making of eSports Champions,” Variety has learned exclusively.

The New York Times bestseller was published in March, co-authored by Ryan Dempsey and seven past and present OpTic members: Ryan Musselman, Nadeshot, Will Johnson, Scump, Hector Rodriguez, Ryan Wyatt and Ashley Glassel. OpTic is a professional American eSports team.

Sacchi and Groesch will produce under Sacchi’s 5 More Minutes banner, along with Bill Kenney (who most recently served as director of business development at Relativity Sports).

The book explores the requirements to succeed in professional video gaming; the consequences of newfound fame; the inception, rise and global popularity of eSports; and inside the minds of the elite players. Matt Damon spent Monday in Woolwich, south east London, filming scenes from the upcoming "Jason Bourne" film. "Black Panther" scribe Joe Robert Cole has come onboard to pen the script for "Map of Bones," the film adaptation of the James Rollins 2005 novel for Lionsgate. John Sacchi, Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen are producing.

The story centers on the bones of the three Magi who paid homage to the newborn Jesus Christ. The story starts at a crowded service in Germany when armed intruders in monks' robes unleash a nightmare of destruction, and its up to a covert branch of the U.S. Defense department to discover the truth.

Lionsgate is bringing the James Rollins thriller “Map of Bones” to life with “Black Panther” writer Joe Robert Cole on board to pen the script, Variety has learned exclusively.

John Sacchi is producing for Lionsgate as part of his recent move from an executive into a producer post at the studio. Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen are also producing under their 21 Laps shingle.

“Map of Bones,” published in 2005, is the second of a dozen novels Rollins’ best-selling Sigma Force series, which combines historical figures and events and creates fictional thrillers that are centered around Sigma Force — an elite covert arm of the U.S. Defense Department made up of former Special Forces officers trained as experts in various scientific fields.

‘Mean Girls’ Director Mark Waters Boards ‘Dork Diaries’ Movie

Lionsgate has tapped “Mean Girls” director Mark Waters to handle the movie version of middle school comedy “Dork Diaries.”

The studio picked up movie rights to Rachel Renee Russell’s book series last year. There are nine installments of “Dork Diaries” with over 21 million copies in print.

The story centers on 14-year-old Nikki Maxwell dealing with friends and enemies at a new school. Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing’s Aladdin imprint published the books, starting with “Dork Diaries: Tales From a Not-So-Fabulous Life” in 2009.

Annie Hendy wrote the script for the movie. John Sacchi is producing.

Besides “Mean Girls,” Waters’ directing credits include “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Freaky Friday,” “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” and “Vampire Academy.” He is repped by CAA.

Azealia Banks Starring in ‘Coco’ Movie, Directed by RZA

Lionsgate and its Codeblack Films division have tapped hip-hop artist Azealia Banks to star as the title character in music drama “Coco” with RZA directing.

The role marks Banks’ feature film debut. She unveiled her first album, “Broke With Expensive Taste,” last year.

Common, Jill Scott, Lucien Laviscount, Lorraine Toussaint and Hana Mae Lee will also star. Paul Hall is producing.

RZA directs from a screenplay by Nicole Asher in which an aspiring hip-hop artist struggles to pursue both her music career and fulfill her parents’ dream of finishing college after a record deal goes awry. When she returns to school, Coco discovers the vivid world of slam poetry where she finds her true voice and an unlikely love.

John Sacchi, Bree Bailey and Jessica Switch are overseeing the project for the studio. RZA made his feature directing debut with 2012’s “Man with the Iron Fists.”

Lionsgate, Vertigo Entertainment Conjure Magic Thriller ‘Pentacle’

Exclusive: Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment has set up feature Pentacle at Lionsgate, based on an original pitch by Black List writer Ian Fried (Gaslight, The Ever After Murders). The story is described as a dark, Amblin-style thriller set in the world of magic. This marks Fried’s latest studio project after selling sci-fi pitch Prism to Paramount, which John Davis and Davis Entertainment are producing. He also sold supernatural action pitch Spectral to Legendary, which has James Badge Dale starring for director Nic Mathieu and is already slated for an August 2016 release.

John Sacchi and Jessica Switch are overseeing Pentacle for Lionsgate. Lee will produce for Vertigo alongside president of production Adam Stone. Vertigo’s John Powers Middleton is executive producing and VP Irene Yeung is overseeing for the company, which has a first-look deal with Warner Bros. and this year scored a $468 million global hit with The Lego Movie.

Lionsgate Acquires the CIA Thriller 'Operation Avalanche'

Xyz Films and Lionsgate Films have announced today that Lionsgate has acquired all U.S. and Canadian rights to the new thriller Operation Avalanche from acclaimed filmmaker Matt Johnson. Johnson's first film The Dirties, which he directed, co-wrote, and co-starred in, won the Grand Prize at Slamdance in 2013. The multi-hyphenate is reteaming with his Dirties co-writer Josh Boles, co-star Owen Williams, producer Matthew Miller, and has brought on Toronto-based producer Lee Kim (The Conspiracy, I'll Follow You Down). Nick Spicer will executive produce for Xyz Films, with Michael Paseornek, John Sacchi, and Jessica Switch overseeing for Lionsgate. Production is set to begin June 30th in Toronto, Houston, and Washington D.C.

Summit Entertainment has picked up all rights to Rachel Renée Russell’s bestseller series and is in negotiations to reunite with producer Karen Rosenfelt of Sunswept Entertainment.

Dork Diaries follows 14-year-old Nikki Maxwell as she navigates her way through new school, mean girls and first crushes.

The series has sold around 13m copies worldwide. The seventh book is due out this summer followed by the eighth in autumn.

Published by Aladdin, a division of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, “Dork Diaries” has over 13 million copies in print with a seventh book due out in the summer and and eighth in the fall. Publishing rights for the series have been sold in over 35 countries with translation into 32 different languages.

Exclusive: G.I. Joe: Retaliation helmer Jon M. Chu and Hieu Ho have made a deal to produce Run, a high concept action horror film they’ve set at Lionsgate under their Chu Studios banner. Alex Ankeles & Morgan Jurgenson are writing the script, and John Sacchi is overseeing for Lionsgate. Ankeles is repped by CAA and Kaplan/Perrone; Jurgenson is Apa and Jonathan Hung, while Chu’s repped by Pye, Wme and Smgsb. This is another example of Chu branching out. He started on a musical track, helming Step Up 2: The Streets with Briana Evigan and Channing Tatum, and Step Up 3D, both of which grossed big overseas.
