‘Westworld’: Those Drone Hosts Were a Ready-Made Response to Facebook’s Growing Problems

‘Westworld’: Those Drone Hosts Were a Ready-Made Response to Facebook’s Growing Problems
Much of Season 1 of “Westworld” was built around the idea that mankind’s creations can (and in some ways are meant to) rebel against their makers. The creeping consciousness that built up over the entire 10 episodes was part of what made the hosts such imposing figures. And it all happened right under the noses of the people meant to protect against it.

Where their predecessors did all this planning in plain sight, with Season 2 properly underway, those same creations are now creeping up behind. It’s a short scene, but the sequence with Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) and Charlotte (Tessa Thompson) in the underground lab certainly stands out from the rest of the 75-minute premiere. It’s not just because of what is slowly lurking behind Bernard, but the things we find out about what they’re doing while no one’s watching.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Westworld” Season 2, Episode 1, “Journey Into Night.”]

10 Modern Horror Comedies That Deserve More Love

Over the years, I’ve been pretty vocal about how much I adore horror comedies, and considering how challenging the world at large has been over the last few years, it’s truly my favorite subsection of the genre to disappear into as of late. There have been numerous brilliant humorous horror movies over the years, but I thought now would be the perfect time to celebrate 10 films from the modern landscape of genre cinema that have not only been largely under-appreciated by fans, but also do a killer job of finding new ways to merge the funnies with the frights.

Just a note before we begin: I purposefully left off films like Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, What We Do in the Shadows, Cabin in the Woods, Zombieland, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, The Frighteners and projects of that caliber, because I feel like some of those

‘Westworld’ Creators Respond to Reddit Rickroll Prank, as Ed Harris Actually Reveals Something About Season 2

‘Westworld’ Creators Respond to Reddit Rickroll Prank, as Ed Harris Actually Reveals Something About Season 2
Westworld” has been dominating headlines leading up to its Season 2 premiere, but nothing done by HBO has caused the stir of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s Reddit prank: the now (in)famous, “Westworld” rickroll.

So when the cast and creators sat down for their Fyc panel Tuesday night, it came as no surprise to anyone in the Arclight Hollywood’s jam-packed auditorium that the first question wasn’t about the premiere episode they just saw. Moderator Paul Scheer started off by asking how that idea came up.

Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy shared a brief look, but she nodded toward him to answer. “This is me? This is my fault now?” Nolan said, earning a smattering of laughs.

“We love Reddit and we wanted to celebrate Reddit in exactly the way they like to be celebrated: a sadomasochistic relationship where we over-promise and under-deliver,” Nolan said. “Though I think

‘Best F(r)iends, Vol. 1’: Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero Follow ‘The Room,’ Inspired by ‘The Disaster Artist’ and Edibles

‘Best F(r)iends, Vol. 1’: Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero Follow ‘The Room,’ Inspired by ‘The Disaster Artist’ and Edibles
Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero’s 20-year-old friendship survived making “the ‘Citizen Kane’ of bad movies” (“The Room”) and the Academy Award-nominated film based on its painful production (“The Disaster Artist”). However, the duo doesn’t quite agree on how to pronounce the title of their latest collaboration, “Best F(r)iends,” a two-volume drama directed by Justin MacGregor.

“It’s not ‘Best Fiends,’ it’s ‘Friends,'” Wiseau repeatedly insisted at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre last night during a Q&A. Sestero — the project’s screenwriter, co-producer, and lead actor, opposite Wiseau — demurred, conceding that Werner Herzog’s 1999 documentary “My Best Fiend” was “a big inspiration.”

Sestero explained the origins for the title’s ambiguous punctuation: “I had an edible and I was trying to figure out what the title should be. And Tommy said, ‘You know what? I like this style,’ and I thought, All right.”

The film stars Wiseau as Harvey,
