Tom Hanks Goes on a Nsfw Rant On Film Critics About Here Movie
Image
Tom Hanks isn't holding back his opinions on movie critics and commentators, as the beloved actor went off on a Nsfw rant following his latest box office flop, Here. Reuniting Hanks with his old Forrest Gump co-star, Robin Wright, Here follows multiple generations of the Young family in their home over the span of a century. Despite a strong cast, which also includes Kelly Reilly, Leslie Zemeckis, Paul Bettany, Ophelia Lovibond, and Michelle Dockerty, Here has failed to impress critics and audiences, scoring weak reviews and drastically under-performing at the box office earning just $5 million in its opening weekend.

During a recent appearance on the Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend podcast, Hanks shared his unfiltered thoughts about movie critics swaying the public opinion about movies and, worst of all, those who go back on their original reviews decades later. "The critics weigh in... and that's always up, down. 'We hate it.

‘Here’ Is the World’s Saddest Zillow Ad Starring Tom Hanks

Loiter on any patch of land for a few hours, and you can feel centuries of history quietly thrumming beneath your feet. Stand in the corner of a suburban house on a lot that was once nothing but barren, ashen ground and will, several million years into the future, be blessed with the name “New Jersey,” and you’ll witness life in all its wonder, sorrow, and glory. Dinosaurs stomp past, ice ages come and go, indigenous people hunt for food. Rebels fight the redcoats, Ben Franklin bitches about his politically backward son,...

Here Review: The AI de-aging is cool, but the film is uneven
Image
Plot: The events and people who occupy a single spot of land are followed from pre-history to 2024.

Review: Robert Zemeckis is a director who’s always been well ahead of the industry regarding technical innovation. Many of his movies, including Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and, yes, even Forrest Gump, are classics. With Here, he once again tries to innovate, with a static shot of a single spot of land being followed from the dinosaur era to today. Most of the film revolves around the inhabitants of a colonial home built for the son of Benjamin Franklin. Eventually, it is occupied by many different families, with the most significant emphasis being placed on the Young Family.

It’s here that Zemeckis once again tries to innovate in terms of VFX. He uses AI-enhanced de-aging technology to depict about eighty years in the life of this family, with Paul Bettany,...

Here Cast & Character Guide: Who Stars Alongside Tom Hanks & Robin Wright
Image
Director Robert Zemeckis' Here depicts the lives of a wide cast of characters as they appear on a single slice of land across history. Based on Richard McGuire's graphic novel of the same name, Here follows a story that spans centuries of American history. Despite the compelling concept, critics' reviews of 2024's Here have skewed negative, despite boasting an impressive cast.

With Tom Hanks leading the cast of the 2024 film, Here certainly carries a great deal of star power. However, he's hardly the only recognizable name in the cast. Since the movie covers multiple periods in history, it can't just rely on Hanks and also draws heavily on the performance of a long list of stars, each of which playing a character associated in some way with the land that drives Here's story.

Here Cast & Character Breakdown

‘Here’ Review: Robert Zemeckis’s High-Concept Family Epic Is a Mawkish Misfire
Image
As Forrest Gump marks its 30th anniversary, Here finds director Robert Zemeckis reteaming with that film’s screenwriter, Eric Roth, and two stars, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, for an adaptation of Richard McGuire’s 2014 graphic novel of the same name. This film turns out to be a fitting companion piece to Zemeckis’s divisive 1994 best picture winner, as it sees him once again applying boomer nostalgia to a unique, albeit woefully misguided, VFX-aided odyssey through mid-20th-century America.

With their script, Zemeckis and Roth seek to lend an air of cosmic grandeur to their tale of suburban triumphs and woes. The action stretches back to the age of the dinosaurs, and it catches up to contemporary times, but for all of the film’s bobbing and weaving through various time periods, it doesn’t take long to figure out that the only era that the filmmakers actually care about...

‘Here’ Review: Tom Hanks and Robin Wright Get Boxed in by Banal Story in Robert Zemeckis’ Fixed-Camera Experiment
Image
There’s something quintessentially American and straight out of Norman Rockwell about centering a survey of multiple generations around the living room, with idealized themes of home and family reinforced by scenes around the Christmas tree or the dining table, fully extended to accommodate the ever-expanding clan at Thanksgiving. But relatable doesn’t always mean interesting, even if the moments of joy don’t hide the vein of sadness and disappointment that runs through Here.

The same goes for the idea of shooting everything — reaching back to prehistory and right on up through contemporary times — from the same fixed point and using the same wide angle. In terms of technical craft, it’s a daring experiment, but one perhaps less geared to a dynamic narrative than an art installation. Narrowing the frame constricts the storytelling, no matter how many times a Significant Life Moment is shoved up close to the lens for emphasis.

‘Here’ Review: Robert Zemeckis Rues Time Lost, Gained, and Wasted with a De-Aged Tom Hanks and Robin Wright
Image
Life isn’t too short — it’s long, as Robert Zemeckis’ brisk, inventive, and earnest latest experiment, “Here,” ponders in an hour and 40 minutes that span multiple centuries and lifetimes unfolding on the same spot on Earth. The Oscar-winning, ever-envelope-pushing filmmaker opens on prehistoric times as dinosaurs stalk the Earth, charts the arrival of Indigenous people in that very spot, gives us the birth of Benjamin Franklin, his kid, and his kid’s kid, and then takes us through the life and times of a midcentury American family led by a de-aged Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. It’s a “Forrest Gump” reunion for Zemeckis in more ways than one, as his Forrest and Jenny, here Richard and Margaret Young, are joined by that film’s Oscar-winning scribe, Eric Roth, in adapting Richard McGuire’s celebrated graphic novel.

For all the good and bad of what I am about to say,...

The Past Is Always Present: ‘The Hills of California’ and ‘Our Town’ on Broadway
Image
“I can’t bear it,” Emily Webb mourns in the final minutes of Our Town, spectrally revisiting childhood scenes of her family after she’s been laid to rest. “They’re so young and beautiful. Why did they ever have to get old?” The unendurable passage of time haunts not only Kenny Leon’s wispy but lovely production of Thornton Wilder’s American epic (the fifth Broadway revival since its original 1938 run), but also a new spellbinding play recently arrived from London, Jez Butterworth’s The Hills of California.

If Wilder, in eschewing the use of scenery and most props in Our Town, was an early minimalist, Butterworth imagines his worlds on a maximalist scale. His last Broadway play, the thunderously searing The Ferryman, featured a live goose, rabbit, and baby on stage. And though The Hills of California has no animals to speak of, it has a beast of a set from Rob Howell,...

Tom Hanks at an event for Larry Crowne (2011)
Here | UK release finally confirmed for Robert Zemeckis’ new film
Tom Hanks at an event for Larry Crowne (2011)
Tom Hanks, Robert Zemeckis, Eric Roth and Robin Wright are all coming back together for Here – and it’s heading to the UK in January 2025.

A reunion of director Robert Zemeckis and star Tom Hanks would have ignited something of a scramble some ten years ago. They’d previously made Forrest Gump and The Polar Express before, although their most recent collaboration – Pinocchio – was comfortably dwarfed by Guillermo del Toro coming in with his own version.

However, Here looks fascinating. In a podcast episode earlier in the year, writer Eric Roth dropped some hints about the movie. It was funded independently, and only after it was put to market did Sony Pictures pick it up. Even then, Sony grabbed the US distribution, and the UK release was in limbo.

But not anymore. Last week it was revealed that Amazon MGM had acquired the UK distribution rights, and was looking to...

Thirty years after playing out the tragic love story of Forrest and Jenny in Robert Zemeckis‘s Best Picture-winning Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright have reunited for the director’s latest film Here, which Sony Pictures will be releasing on November 15th. We previously heard that Hank and Wright would be de-aged using AI technology for the film, and now we can see the results of that de-aging process in the first batch of Here images that have been released via Variety and Vanity Fair today. One of the images can be seen at the top of this article, and more can be found below.

Scripted by Forrest Gump screenwriter Eric Roth and based on Richard McGuire’s 2014 graphic novel of the same name, Here takes place across a century in a single location: a home that is, over time, inhabited by the likes of a couple at...

Tom Hanks and Robin Wright Are De-Aged by Decades in ‘Here’ First Look Photos; Robert Zemeckis Reveals the Camera Never Moves in 104-Minute Film
Image
Tom Hanks and Robin Wright appear decades younger in first-look photos from “Here,” their highly-anticipated reunion with “Forrest Gump” director Robert Zemeckis. The movie was even co-written by Zemeckis and “Forrest Gump” scribe Eric Roth.

Based on Richard McGuire’s 2014 graphic novel of the same name, “Here” takes place across a century in a single location. The camera never moves from a fixed position inside a home for the entire 104-minute runtime, as the viewers are treated to the stories of the people who made a home there. The central couple is played by Hanks and Wright.

“The single perspective never changes, but everything around it does,” Zemeckis recently told Vanity Fair about the ambitious storytelling conceit. “It’s actually never been done before. There are similar scenes in very early silent movies, before the language of montage was invented. But other than that, yeah, it was a risky venture.

Minx Season 3: Cancelation & Everything We Know
Image
Quick Links Minx Season 3 Is Canceled Minx Season 3 Cast Minx Season 3 Story Minx has officially been canceled by Starz, effectively ending the show forever. The season 2 finale left plenty of plot threads for Minx season 3 to explore, including the aftermath of Joyce's rebellious act. The core cast, including Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson, were expected to return for season 3 if it was renewed, along with other characters like Bambi and Constance.

Minx season 3 was more than teased by the cliffhanger-heavy season 2 finale, but the period comedy has once again been canceled. The raunchy comedy Minx received praise for its quirky characters and colorful 1970's world of adult magazine publishing, detailing the story of the first erotic magazine aimed at the female market. Minx debuted on HBO Max in 2022 before moving over to Starz for 2023's season 2.

HBO's decision to cancel Minx was again called into question when reviews for Minx season 2 rolled in,...

Minx Canceled For Second Time After Starz Renewal
Image
Minx, the show that was originally canceled by Max and then saved by Starz, has now been canceled after its second season. Series star Jake Johnson believes that the show's lack of promotion due to the SAG-AFTRA strike and the move to HBO Max affected its performance. Despite the cancelation, there is hope for Minx to continue on as there are already three streaming platforms showing interest in picking it up.

Although it may not be a surprise to some, Minx has had cold water poured on it once again, with the show being canceled by Starz. The show was originally canceled by Max prior to the airing of its second season, which seemed set to fall victim to Warner Bros. Discovery's brutal tax write-offs. However, the series was saved by Starz, and the second season was delivered in the summer, with the finale airing on September 8, 2023, but...

Minx has been canceled yet again, this time by Starz
Image
Minx didn’t have much luck. After being canceled by HBO Max after one season, the erotic comedy was saved by Starz, but Minx has been canceled yet again following its second season.

The news isn’t all that surprising, but still a blow for fans of the series. Set in 1970s Los Angeles, Minx stars Ophelia Lovibond as Joyce, an “earnest young feminist who joins forces with low-rent publisher (Jake Johnson) to create the first erotic magazine for women.” In addition to Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson, Minx also stars Idara Victor, Jessica Lowe, Lennon Parham, Michael Angarano, and Oscar Montoya. The first season stands at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, although its audience score is much lower.

Minx Season 3 Not Happening As Comedy Gets Cancelled For Second Time
Image
Minx season 3 was officially canceled, leaving fans disappointed. Starz ends '70s-set comedy show despite a previous revival. Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson's Minx won't return for season 3

Minx season 3 isn’t happening, as the period comedy show has been canceled for the second time. Canceled for the first time by Max after an acclaimed season 1, Minx was given a second chance at life when season 2 was picked up by Starz. The ‘70s-set comedy charting the rise of a scrappy feminist magazine scored with critics in its second go-around, as reflected in season 2’s 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, sparking hopes of a third season.

Those high Minx season 3 hopes have unfortunately been dashed, however, as Starz has now itself canceled the show (via Deadline). The move comes on the heels of Starz canceling its comedy Shining Vale, which was also removed from its streaming platforms. Starz executives reportedly...

‘Minx’ Canceled Again After Getting Reprieve By Starz
Image
Starz will not be proceeding with a third season of 1970s-set series Minx.

The news is not surprising. Minx star Jake Johnson told Deadline last month that he did not expect a Season 3 renewal for the period erotic comedy, whose Season 2 finale aired Sept. 8.

Starz last January stepped in to rescue Minx, starring Ophelia Lovibond and Johnson, following the series’ cancellation by Max (then HBO Max) as part of cost-cutting tax write-offs while production was wrapping on Season 2. The premium network, which is in the process of cutting ties with owner Lionsgate, picked up both Season 1 and the unaired Season 2 of Minx, which is produced by Lionsgate Television. Both seasons will remain on the Starz app and all major platforms.

Speaking with Deadline, Johnson, who had cut his hair short in anticipation of the cancellation, referenced of Minx‘s first axing and the challenges the show faced by its second...

‘Minx’ Canceled at Starz
Image
Bottom Dollar is closing shop.

Starz has opted to cancel Minx, the comedy about the first porn magazine for women, after a two-season run. The news comes after the series from creator Ellen Rapoport was originally developed for Warner Bros. Discovery streamer Max, which aired the first season and paid for a second before ultimately scrapping the show as a tax write-off with mere days remaining before production on the sophomore run was completed.

Minx was shopped by producers Lionsgate Television with the studio ultimately setting up the comedy starring Jake Johnson and Ophelia Lovibond at Starz, which is currently controlled by its parent company, Lionsgate. Max effectively paid to produce season two, with Lionsgate footing the bill to complete production and market season two. The second season premiered in July, in the thick of the writers and performers’ strikes making it challenging for cast members and producers to promote the show’s return.

‘Minx’ Canceled at Starz After Network Rescued Show From Max
Image
“Minx” has been canceled at Starz, Variety has learned.

This now marks the second time the series has been canceled. The first season of the comedy originally aired on Max, where it was renewed for a second season before it was canceled in a cost-cutting move.

Starz then announced that they had acquired the second season of the show and would air it along with the first. Season 2 debuted on Starz on July 21. Both seasons remain available to stream on the Starz app and platforms.

The show received positive reviews from critics, holding an average critical approval rating of 93% over both seasons on Rotten Tomatoes. It failed to find a large audience, however, with the linear airings on Starz of Season 2 averaging less than 100,000 viewers per episode. There is no streaming viewership data publicly available for the series.

“Minx” was set in 1970s Los Angeles. Per the official logline, the...

Minx: Season Three? EP Jake Johnson Thinks Starz Series Has Likely Been Cancelled
It looks like Minx won't be back for a third season. Star and executive producer Jake Johnson isn't expecting Starz to renew the low-rated series. Season two finished airing on the cable channel in early September.

A comedy series, the Minx TV show stars Ophelia Lovibond, Johnson, Idara Victor, Jessica Lowe, Lennon Parham, Oscar Montoya, and Elizabeth Perkins. Set in Los Angeles in the 1970s, the story revolves around Joyce Prigger (Lovibond), an earnest young feminist who joins forces with a low-rent publisher named Doug Renetti (Johnson). Together, they create the first erotic magazine for women, Minx. Through this partnership, they discover meaningful relationships in unexpected places. In season two, after Doug and Joyce sell Bottom Dollar to a retired shipping magnate with unlimited money and power, Minx becomes a commercial success, bringing more money, more fame, and more...

Jake Johnson Predicts ‘Minx’ Is Nixed After ‘Brutal’ Move from Max to Starz
Image
Jake Johnson is predicting “Minx” will get canceled, again, and this time for good.

The actor, who also serves as a co-executive producer on the series, told Deadline that a third season is unlikely. “Minx” has already been through a lot: it was initially canceled at Max after already completing production on Season 2. Starz later acquired and aired that season, but it sounds like the 1970s-set comedy centered around a women’s adult magazine ends now.

“I think the move to Starz, I think HBO kind of doing their HBO thing, or HBO Max, whatever it’s called now, I think that was brutal for [the show],” Johnson said. “Then, I think the strike coming out right as we were trying to promote it…My guess is you can’t beat something up that many times and keep going.”

Johnson called the situation “unfortunate” as “there was a lot to that show.

Minx Is Probably Done, Jake Johnson Says
Image
While there’s still no official word regarding Minx‘s renewal, it’s looking more and more like Bottom Dollar is going out of business for good.

Series star Jake Johnson recently told our sister site Deadline that he doesn’t expect the comedy to come back for Season 3. He called the show’s 2022 renewal-then-cancellation at Max, and the subsequent move to Starz, “brutal,” adding that Season 2’s unfortunate timeline didn’t help things, either.

‘Minx’ Season 3 Renewal Unlikely, Says Star Jake Johnson: “My Guess Is You Can’t Beat Something Up That Many Times And Keep Going”
Image
A third season of Starz’s period erotic comedy Minx isn’t likely in the cards, according to co-ep and star Jake Johnson.

In a recent Zoom chat with Deadline, the actor shared that he hasn’t heard anything about a final decision. “But by evidence of me cutting my hair short,” he said, “I don’t [expect a renewal].”

“I think the move to Starz, I think HBO kind of doing their HBO thing, or HBO Max, whatever it’s called now, I think that was brutal for [the show],” Johnson reflected. “Then, I think the strike coming out right as we were trying to promote it…My guess is you can’t beat something up that many times and keep going.”

Johnson called the hampering of the show’s success, simply as a result of the turbulent Hollywood moment in which it debuted, “unfortunate,” given his feeling that “there was a lot to that show.
