In the glory days of the TV upfronts, the broadcast networks would build up to a big reveal: The schedule release.
The fall schedule would be revealed, and media buyers could get a glimpse of what show would get that prized Friends or CSI lead-in.
In 2025, the upfronts still build up to a schedule release, but it isn’t a fall lineup: It’s an NFL game.
The only connective tissue between this year’s upfronts, from NBCUniversal and Fox to Disney, YouTube and Netflix was sports, and the NFL in particular, with every company using their presentation to reveal an upcoming matchup that advertisers will want to buy into. Netflix and YouTube each had NFL commissioner Roger Goodell make the reveals himself (though only Netflix made him wear a Santa Claus-esque coat).

Fox Entertainment’s upfront presentation to advertisers was a star-studded affair that began with Jamie Foxx mocking Elon Musk and President Donald Trump, and ended with Joel McHale popping a bottle of champagne with a prop knife in Gordon Ramsay’s honor.
At one point in between, Tom Brady flubbed a stunt pass to Rob Gronkowski so bad, the ball landed among the Madison Avenue execs. (That was not long after Gronkowski took a shot at his and Brady’s 73-year-old former coach Bill Belichick for dating 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson.)
Held Monday at the Manhattan Center in New York, the event showcasing Fox broadcast network’s 2025-2026 schedule — as well as programming across ad-supported streamer Tubi, Fox Sports and Fox News — kicked off with some jokes from “Beat Shazam” host Foxx.
“It’s been a hectic few weeks for me,” the actor said. “But truly I wanted to be here.

Fox Sports personalities Tom Brady Erin Andrews revealed to ad buyers at Fox’s upfront presentation Monday in New York that the network is getting some extra football this season.
The pair announced that Fox has gained rights to air an exclusive NFL doubleheader in Week 16 of the upcoming season a to-be-determined date in December.
The games, one between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders, the other between the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers, will give Fox 11 doubleheaders. That’s the most ever by a single network in one season, Fox said, under the complex scheduling system among primary rightsholders.
Brady is coming off his first season in the Fox broadcast booth after a Hall of Fame career as a quarterback.

Have you stayed at the Armani Hotel in Milan lately? Have you whiffed the air in the lobby? One Hollywood producer who just returned from a trip says she practically needed a hazmat suit to circumvent the fragrance cloud she encountered while checking in. “It was awful,” she says, scrunching her nose. “It was like they were trying to baptize us in it.”
Homesick’s Dodger Stadium candle
Of course, you don’t have to travel all the way to Milan to discover that high-end hotels have long been pumping perfumes into their public spaces, sometimes with pleasant results, sometimes not. But the trend has lately been expanding well beyond hotels. Indeed, these days, you can’t shop in a mall or gamble in a casino or even venture to a ballgame without being smacked by a blast of some impossible-to-ignore aroma. It’s all part of the olfactory branding...

Throughout its brilliant nine-season run, "Seinfeld" brought a number of celebrities on to play amusing caricatures of themselves. Raquel Welch (star of "Scarsdale Surprise"), Marisa Tomei and "The Velvet Fog" Mel Tormé are just a few big names that got in on the fun, but it's arguable the most memorable drop-ins came from the world of sports. Given that Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David are both massive sports fans, this shouldn't be surprising, but it is interesting that both men managed to get players from their favorite, and very different, New York baseball teams to guest on the show.
David, a well-known Yankees fanatic, prevailed upon newly minted World Series champions Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams to appear on the Season 8 episode "The Abstinence" in 1996. Though not anywhere near a top-tier episode, Jeter and Williams were game and comfortable within the comedy genre – which is not always the case for...

Stephen King is an opinionated fellow. Stroll through the fiction aisles of your local bookstore and examine the covers of newish novels, and you probably won't have to search long to find one bearing praise from Stephen King -- which is touching because, in this age of distracted everything, it's nice to see one of the world's most prominent authors exhorting people to lose themselves in a book.
King isn't always a ray of sunshine though. He's infamous for his dislike of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" film adaptation, and hasn't held back on other cinematic interpretations of his novels. And when Entertainment Weekly started giving King column space in its printed pages back in the mid 2000s to rant and rave about all things pop culture, he was unsparing with his hatred for the latest music by Jewel, Beyoncé, and Celine Dion while also unloading both barrels on prestige...

If he can’t beat them, ESPN chief Jimmy Pitaro is still willing to do business with them.
A creative deal that will bring what is perhaps America’s favorite sports studio show to Disney after years of it airing on Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT spotlights a growing willingness at ESPN to take a “curation” approach to game-day concepts and content. Some of the biggest deals at ESPN in recent years aren’t ones that start new formats or series, but rather the type that make ESPN a perch for sports personalities who have already proven popular somewhere else.
The new pact, unveiled formally Monday after leaking over the weekend, makes “Inside the NBA” an ESPN property as far as fans are concerned. To be sure, Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT Sports will continue to produce the show from Atlanta over the term of the pact, which commences with the 2025-26 NBA season.

Even Derek Jeter can learn something new about the game of baseball.
When the former New York Yankees captain joined the Fox Sports roster for the 2023 baseball season, he recalls, he had to find his way on camera. “I didn’t know what to expect. They just threw me at the desk,” Jeter says while holding forth with his colleagues Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz and Kevin Burkhardt, in a makeshift lounge set up for them among the executive offices at New York’s Citi Field. One time, he remembers, “someone started talking to me in my ear and I almost answered them on the air.”

The New York Yankees organization owes George Costanza an apology — and it’s also not too late for Derek Jeter to finally take some private lessons for his swing.
In all 121 years of the Yankees’ history, there has been no more controversial a near-executive than Seinfeld’s George. As the assistant to the traveling secretary, George held a position that few baseball fans ever consider as consequential for the team’s on-field success, but his influence on the ball club under the eccentric and erratic owner George Steinbrenner’s tenure is still paying dividends all these decades later as the team prepares to take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 World Series.
While most of the credit for the Yankees’ ongoing success this season will go to the players — and, perhaps, to whichever short, stocky bald man elected himself to be their hitting coach — baseball is a game that...

New York Yankees legend and Fox Sports analyst Derek Jeter is trading in his cleats for a clapboard.
The baseball hall of famer has quietly launched a production company, Cap 2 Productions (a reference to his number with the Yankees, and his role as captain of the team), which he hopes will take full advantage of the burgeoning interest in sports-related content from TV channels and streaming services.
“It’s not just some random company that was started because we said, ‘hey, we want to get into production now.’ This is an extension of what has been built over the last 10 years,” Jeter tells The Hollywood Reporter in his first interview to discuss Cap 2.

It’s the new Summer of George, and, as was the case during the last one, the New York Yankees aren’t giving George a cent.
To be fair to George Steinbrenner and the rest of the Yankees staff in the mid-1990s, very little of what George Costanza accomplished during his time working for the team on Seinfeld really deserved compensation or consideration. Most of George’s plans for The Pinstripes backfired spectacularly — as was the case with the dreaded cotton uniforms — and, as the Assistant to the Traveling Secretary, he seemed to actually assist his boss, Mr. Wilhelm, much less often than he created new problems for the Traveling Secretary and the rest of the storied franchise.
However, unlike his most famous character, Jason Alexander put in some seriously stellar work during his time on Seinfeld and is accustomed to securing handsome compensation for the effort. So, when...

Both tequila and mariachi bands originate from the Guadalajara region of Mexico. So do actor-filmmaker Gael García Bernal and Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toros, who founded the Centro Internacional de Animación (or El Taller del Chuco) animation studio, financed with his alma mater, the University of Guadalajara, in 2020. The metropolitan area’s high-tech movie theater Sala Guillermo del Toro is also named in his honor.

Many people have dreams of being an actor, sometimes in film and sometimes in television roles.
Some actors fall into the opportunity through lots of auditions, training, and from knowing the right people. But others get their start by becoming a famous name first.
Athletes are often in the public eye, gaining a following for being good at their chosen sport. Once they retire from their profession, some continue to grow their popularity through other ventures.
Many athletes turn to acting, whether through television advertisements and commercials like Coach Prime, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, Eli Manning, and Kevin Durant.
Other athletes like Travis Kelce, Pat McAfee, Deion Sanders (Prime), and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. do podcasts to attract a following.
Some celebrities do one-shot cameos, like Michael Jordan and LeBron James in Space Jam, Uncle Drew starring NBA star Kyrie Irving, Airplane! with Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and Blue Chips...

Welcome to the 259th episode of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter’s TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executives and other guests, and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
Here’s how this week’s episode plays out:
1. Headlines
Will Ferrell, Anthony Mackie, Seth Meyers, The Other Black Girl and Not Dead Yet lead the week’s non-upfronts TV industry headlines.
2. Upfronts: Amazon, Netflix
The streamers officially made their first in-person pitches to Madison Avenue ad buyers and the strategy Amazon employed — a ton of news! — vs. Netflix’s approach (they’re the culture!) couldn’t be more different.
3. Upfronts: Legacy media companies (aka everyone else)

It used to be all about the trailers and the broadcast fall schedules. Now those are largely a thing of the past as the media sector’s upfront presentations to Madison Avenue ad buyers continue to evolve.
Following a week of spin and hard sales, here are eight central takeaways after Netflix, Amazon, NBCUniversal, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, YouTube and Fox made their pitches.
1. The Streaming Giants Came to Play Reese Witherspoon attends as Amazon debuts Inaugural Upfront Presentation at Pier 36 on May 14, 2024 in New York City.
This year was the first time that Netflix and Amazon had physical events in New York during upfronts week (YouTube is now in year three), and they clearly tried to make an impression, gunning for a piece of the $20 billion or so in upfront commitments that used to go exclusively to traditional entertainment companies. Lego Masters host Will Arnett kicked off the 2024 Fox Upfront by introducing most of the celebrity players for the new season, including Jon Hamm, Olivia Culpo, Tom Brady and of course Rob Lowe, who he introduced as coming straight from St. Elmo’s Fire.
What else happened at the presentation in the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City? Read on.
Michael Strahan and Gordon Ramsay kicked off the show in the theater-in-the-sound setting, and it took all of 20 seconds before Ramsay dropped his first f-bomb. The duo riffed about their pairing as hosts and Ramsay cussed some more before they brought out Jeff Collins, President of Advertising Sales, Marketing and Brand Partnerships. “The Fox portfolio is designed to drive maximum impact for your brand,” he said in a statement that absolutely no one has ever heard before at a NY upfront.

The Other Guys' comedic take on buddy cop films features hilarious quotes that keep delivering laughs throughout the movie. The star-studded cast, including Ferrell, Wahlberg, Jackson, and Johnson, adds to the humor and over-the-top nature of the film. Memorable moments like the TLC song references and the unexpected character developments make The Other Guys a standout comedy.
Adam McKay and Will Ferrell took aim at the buddy cop genre and The Other Guys quotes from the 2010 comedy remain as funny now as they did when the movie hit theaters. The Other Guys stars Ferrell as a mild-mannered forensic accountant and Mark Wahlberg as a hot-headed cop who was benched after accidentally shooting New York Yankees' star Derek Jeter. However, after the department's top cops die, they find themselves in the middle of trying to take down a mercenary organization.

It’s a zoo out there. In 1990, the New York Yankees were a disaster; these were not the Derek Jeter years.
With a 67-95 record, 1990 was the first time in 24 years the Bronx Bombers finished in last place in the division, a whopping 21 games behind the rival the Boston Red Sox. It was the team’s worst record since 1912, two years before Babe Ruth even entered Major League Baseball (and eight years before he joined the Yankees). How bad were the 1990 Yankees? They threw a no-hitter and lost.
A new docuseries coming soon to Peacock, “Bronx Zoo ’90: Crime, Chaos, and Baseball,” gives the abysmal season a “The Last Dance” spin, covering both the drama on the field and off. Like what? Well, there was the time when Yankee owner George Steinbrenner paid a notorious gambler to dig up dirt on superstar player Dave Winfield. That gambler is interviewed in...

As Miami’s 2024 Pegasus World Cup drew to a close with a $3 million win by champion thoroughbred National Treasure and a DJ set by Calvin Harris, the post-race buzz was about how the event will spin off into a West Coast version at Santa Anita racetrack this fall. The California Crown, taking place Sept. 28, will be the first entertainment-driven thoroughbred racing event at the historic grounds with The h. wood Group and track-owner 1/St partnering.
“You’ll see some things that are similar to what we do at Pegasus. We will bring together music, entertainment and fashion, but it’ll be more of a vintage Hollywood vibe,” says Belinda Stronach, chairwoman and CEO of 1/St, a technology, entertainment and real estate development company centered around thoroughbred racing and pari-mutuel wagering. 1/St also owns Miami’s Gulfstream track and Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, home of the Triple Crown’s Preakness Stakes.
