In the glory days of the TV upfronts, the broadcast networks would build up to a big reveal: The schedule release.

The fall schedule would be revealed, and media buyers could get a glimpse of what show would get that prized Friends or CSI lead-in.

In 2025, the upfronts still build up to a schedule release, but it isn’t a fall lineup: It’s an NFL game.

The only connective tissue between this year’s upfronts, from NBCUniversal and Fox to Disney, YouTube and Netflix was sports, and the NFL in particular, with every company using their presentation to reveal an upcoming matchup that advertisers will want to buy into. Netflix and YouTube each had NFL commissioner Roger Goodell make the reveals himself (though only Netflix made him wear a Santa Claus-esque coat).

Fox Entertainment’s upfront presentation to advertisers was a star-studded affair that began with Jamie Foxx mocking Elon Musk and President Donald Trump, and ended with Joel McHale popping a bottle of champagne with a prop knife in Gordon Ramsay’s honor.

At one point in between, Tom Brady flubbed a stunt pass to Rob Gronkowski so bad, the ball landed among the Madison Avenue execs. (That was not long after Gronkowski took a shot at his and Brady’s 73-year-old former coach Bill Belichick for dating 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson.)

Held Monday at the Manhattan Center in New York, the event showcasing Fox broadcast network’s 2025-2026 schedule — as well as programming across ad-supported streamer Tubi, Fox Sports and Fox News — kicked off with some jokes from “Beat Shazam” host Foxx.

“It’s been a hectic few weeks for me,” the actor said. “But truly I wanted to be here.

Fox Sports personalities Tom Brady Erin Andrews revealed to ad buyers at Fox’s upfront presentation Monday in New York that the network is getting some extra football this season.

The pair announced that Fox has gained rights to air an exclusive NFL doubleheader in Week 16 of the upcoming season a to-be-determined date in December.

The games, one between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders, the other between the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers, will give Fox 11 doubleheaders. That’s the most ever by a single network in one season, Fox said, under the complex scheduling system among primary rightsholders.

The advertising executive, who most recently jump-started Netflix’s ad business and before that ran advertising for Snapchat, will become a senior adviser to Michael Rubin’s sports-focused holding company.

Gorman will oversee integrated brand and marketing efforts for Fanatics, building a new advertising and brand partnerships strategy that touches all of the company’s divisions, including Commerce, Collectibles, Sportsbook, Fanatics Live and Events, which includes the recently launched Fanatics Fest.

Her role will include both marketing Fanatics and its various businesses, and also helping the company develop a cohesive and unified advertising strategy.

The executive will advise Fanatics chief strategy officer Tucker Kain and split her time between New York and Los Angeles.

Discovery’s TNT spotlights a growing willingness at ESPN to take a “curation” approach to game-day concepts and content. Some of the biggest deals at ESPN in recent years aren’t ones that start new formats or series, but rather the type that make ESPN a perch for sports personalities who have already proven popular somewhere else.

The new pact, unveiled formally Monday after leaking over the weekend, makes “Inside the NBA” an ESPN property as far as fans are concerned. To be sure, Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT Sports will continue to produce the show from Atlanta over the term of the pact, which commences with the 2025-26 NBA season.

Apple TV+ is stepping up to the plate for a three-part docuseries on the 2024 World Series, Variety has learned exclusively.

Production on the series is already underway. It will offer fans exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the teams vying for the Major League Baseball (MLB) championship, including interviews with players, coaches, journalists, fans, and family members.

The show is produced under the partnership between MLB and its MLB Studios label and Imagine Documentaries. Emmy winner R.J. Cutler is directing and executive producing under his This Machine banner, which is set up at Sony Pictures Television. Five-time World Series champion Derek Jeter is also executive producing via Cap 2 Productions. Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Nick Trotta, Justin Wilkes, Sara Bernstein, Marc Gilbar, Mark Blatty, Trevor Smith, and Justin Yungfleisch also executive produce.

Fanatics is planning its first live flagship event, which it is calling Fanatics Fest, for Aug. 16-18, to be held at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City.

NFL legends Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, MLB legend Derek Jeter, and NBA superstar Kevin Durant are attached to participate, as is entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk, Eli Manning, WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu, and wrestling legend Hulk Hogan. Exclusive: Mike Tollin, executive producer of Emmy-winning The Last Dance, today announced the launch of Mtp, a re-branding and restructuring of his Mike Tollin Productions, with a focus on expanded content.

The announcement follows the premiere last month of his six-episode docuseries Justice, USA on Max.

Under the re-brand, sports will remain a major component of Mtp’s content expansion, and has allowed Tollin to bring on new talent and reorganize the company structure. Jonathan Vogler has been elevated to President of Unscripted Productions and Ricky Cruz has been brought on as VP/Development. On the scripted side, Harry Wood is now VP Development and Sarah Alammuri has joined as Director/Development. Steve Tollin remains Director of Finance.

“I love the new team,” said Tollin. “They’re passionate and scrappy. Sports will continue to be our main lane, but we’ll follow the side streets as often as possible to tell stories with pro-social content.

Weeks after mass layoffs hit the iconic sports publication Sports Illustrated under Arena Group Holdings, the owner of the brand rights to the outlet has found a new home.

Authentic Brands Group says that Minute Media has obtained the publishing rights to Si, which will officially part ways with Arena Group.

Minute Media owns The Players’ Tribune (which was founded by Yankees legend Derek Jeter), Mental Floss, FanSided and 90Min. In a statement, the company said that it “plans to honor the legendary status of Sports Illustrated by pushing toward technological innovation, catering to a wider audience on a global scale while also maintaining the core mission of the brand.” Abg will acquire an equity stake in Minute Media as part of the deal.
