Iifa Technical Awards 2013 – Barfi! Takes home 9!

The International Indian Film Academy (Iifa) has announced winners of the ‘Technical Awards’ categories for this year’s Iifa Awards. The 14th Videocon Ddb Oofa Weekend will be held at The Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel, the Official Host Destination Partner from the 4th to the 6th July.

Of the 14 Awards, Anurag Basu’s Barfi! has garnered the highest number of awards in the technical category, a grand total of 9, bagging the award for Best Cinematography (Ravi Varman I.S.C.), Best Screenplay (Anurag Basu &Tani Basu), Best Production Design (Rajat Poddar), Best Sound Design (Shajith Koyeri), Best Song Recording (Eric Pillai – Future Sound Of Bombay) for Ala Barfi, Best Sound Mixing (Debajit Changmai), Best Background Score (Pritam), Best Costume Designing (Aki Narula and Shefalina) and Best Make-Up (Uday Serali).

Tata Elxsi delivers stellar visual effects for Yash Raj Film’s ‘Ek Tha Tiger’

Visual Computing Labs (Vcl), a division of Tata Elxsi Ltd. and a leading player in animation and visual effects announced its association with Ek Tha Tiger, a romantic action thriller, starring superstars Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. This blockbuster film directed by Kabir Khan and produced by Yash Raj Films has close association with Vcl. Scheduled for a theatrical release on 15th August’12, Ek Tha Tiger has extensively leveraged Vcl’s visual and special effects technologies. This film marks Vcl’s 24th collaboration with Yash Raj Films.

Vcl has delivered 1062 visual effects shots for the movie using cutting edge VFX technology and a customized pipeline designed for the complexity of these shots. Upto 60 skilled technical artists were deployed by Vcl for this project, which was completed in a record six and a half month period. The entire duration of CG/VFX in the film spans over a 30 minute duration.

The ePuppet is an interactive animated model, of the Magic Iris vehicle that reflects the actions and the emotions of the user behind the scene. Based in Santa Monica, La, the new setup is designed for Us based films and television production companies. Speaking at the announcement, Madhukar Dev, MD of Tata Elxsi, shared, "The new studio covers an area of close to 4,000 sq feet and has the capacity to accommodate 45 artists at a time who will be working on project basis and freelance model." To head the creative team of artists, the company has hired VFX industry veterans like Joel Hynek, Tricia Ashford and Treva Blue, who bring several years of industry experience with them. S. Who would have guessed that one could shoot most parts of a film in Philadelphia and call it New York? A far cry from yesteryear's' films that used cardboard cut-outs for the sun and the moon, the art of visual effects (vfx) has progressed by leaps and bounds enabling filmmakers to use computer technology to save on crucial time and money. John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh starrer New York (NY) , which chronicles the tale of three youngsters before and after the 9\11 attacks, has used extensive visual effects by vfx house Tata Elxsi Visual Computing Labs (Vcl). Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Vcl's Deepal Dass explained the vfx work in the film, "Apart from the challenging climax, there were lot of miscellaneous sequences in NY where extensive computer graphics (CG) was used. Many sequences were actually all shot in Philadelphia but we were meant to make it look like New York.
