Film Review: ‘Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché’

Film Review: ‘Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché’
There’s an alarming degree of disingenuousness, or perhaps merely naiveté, permeating “Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché.” To begin with, there’s that title, “The Untold Story,” which ignores a number of earlier documentaries not to mention the significant amount of scholarship on pioneering filmmaker Alice Guy-Blaché. Also omitted is any mention of the 2009 Gaumont and Kino DVD box sets that made 66 of her films available. These are what can be called inconvenient truths, for Pamela B. Green, director of “Be Natural,” is on a mission to discover why — supposedly — no one has ever heard of Alice Guy-Blaché.

As Green tells it, the reason is pure and simple: Because she was a woman, Guy-Blaché was written out of the history books. That’s not entirely wrong. Alice Guy, as she was then known, was present at the very start of the film industry and played a crucial

Harrison Ford Takes on First Animated Movie in Secret Life of Pets 2

Harrison Ford Takes on First Animated Movie in Secret Life of Pets 2
Harrison Ford has landed his first ever role in an animated movie. The 75-year-old actor has officially boarded the cast of The Secret Life of Pets 2. According to a new report, Ford will be voicing the lead character in the upcoming animated sequel. The first movie's lead character was voiced by comedian Louis C.K. However, Illumination Entertainment parted ways with the star following a bunch of sexual misconduct allegations last year.

It's rather amazing that Harrison Ford, whose career as an actor spans more than 50 years and includes major roles in legendary franchises like Star Wars and Indiana Jones, has never voiced a role in an animated movie. This is a huge get for The Secret Life of Pets 2, especially since he isn't just voicing a small character in the movie. He's going to be the lead, which raises some questions about the direction this movie is heading.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Adds Tig Notaro As Guest Star

Season 2 of CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery will bring stand-up comedian Tig Notaro on board for a guest starring role, though she probably will be too busy to deliver too many punchlines. The series is busy prepping for its next run of episodes and has been busy making deals in the offseason, adding more familiar faces to the cast and casting at least one major character from Star Trek lore with former Inhumans star Anson Mount stepping in as Captain Pike. In addition to performing stand-up, Notaro is a regular fixture in both film and television, having had roles on ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat, TV Land’s The Jim Gaffigan Show, and Netflix’s recently canceled Lady Dynamite. Women Creators and Directors Making Strides on 2018–19 Pilot Season

Courtney Kemp created ABC’s “Get Christie Love” reboot: Instagram

This pilot season looks like it will be a historic one for women directors and creators. According to a report from Variety, “female creators and directors saw gains virtually across the board.” The #MeToo and #TimesUp movements are at least partially responsible for this growth, as feminist activism has inspired networks to look “for ways to increase female representation.”

For the most part, those efforts have been a success. There are more women creators at ABC, CBS, and The CW this pilot season than last year. Thirteen female creators are behind ABC pilots this season, as opposed to 2017–18’s nine women creators. Among them are Courtney Kemp (“Get Christie Love”), Diablo Cody (“Most Likely To”), and Liz Meriwether and J.J. Philbin (“Single Parents”).

Eight of this year’s 18 CBS pilots are women-created — compared to last year’s four — including Gloria Calderon Kellett

According to Vulture, women are directing 24 of the 75 broadcast TV pilots this year, which amounts to 32 percent. This marks a huge step up from last year, when just six of 70 pilots were were female-helmed.

Also, a greater variety of women are directing. Nineteen women are directing pilots, as compared to last year’s four. To add to the good news, after two years of including zero women of color as directors, the 2017–18 broadcast pilots boast three black women and three Latina women among its helmers.

Regina King, Kat Coiro, Lake Bell, Julie Plec, Rachel Lee Goldenberg, Patricia Riggen, Rosemary Rodriguez, and Zetna Fuentes are among this year’s female pilot directors.
