There was a lot of good TV in 2024. It was an unusual year overall, the product of a post-strike Hollywood in the midst of a feverish industry-wide evolution from streaming to the cineplex, but plenty of great series still flowed throughout the year. Horror TV was no different: a slowdown in output didn’t mean a slowdown in quality, and there were a handful of outstanding horror shows in 2024 — a couple of them easily among the best shows of the year overall, and sadly, a couple of them also bowing out for their final seasons.
Here are our picks for the best of the best horror TV shows of 2024.
“Interview With the Vampire” Season 2 (AMC) ‘Interview With the Vampire’

Stephen King is a horror genre staple, and he often recommends TV shows or movies that he enjoys. He's best known for iconic horror novels such as The Shining and It, and has remained in the public spotlight for his books and adaptations of his work. Stephen King even has another book on the way, continuing a legacy that has scared readers for decades.
Because of his reputation in the horror genre, many trust his recommendations for different works, whether they be novels, TV shows, or even films. The genres of his recommendations often vary, but horror still seems to be the most consistent. Though many of King's books could still use sequels, his recommended shows such as Cabinet of Curiosities and Midnight Mass will have to do in the meantime.

2024 had a lot of TV shows ending, which included plenty of sci-fi and fantasy shows. And some of those endings left fans hungry for more!
It's no surprise that TV networks and streamers have a bad habit of canceling some shows too early. That's more true for sci-fi and fantasy shows that have a harder time capturing a large audience to justify their large budgets. It's jarring that some shows barely seemed to get out of the gate before being cut short. From famous shows to more overlooked ones, here's a look at the sci-fi/fantasy show cancellations that really angered folks in 2024!

Of all the horror shows that premiered in the year 2024 (or debuted a new season), which one do you see yourself re-watching because it was just that good? I can think of a few!
In our list of the best horror shows of 2024, we include both new shows and old favorites that dropped a new season. But before we begin, let’s quickly mention the worst of the worst. On our list below, you will not find Hulu’s American Horror Stories or FX’s Grotesquerie, the latter being one series we wish we could unsee! Yes, it’s that awful.
And as far as honorable mentions go, we have to give a shout to Them: The Scare and Dead Boy Detectives. Now, drumroll for our top four….

A new season of the supernatural drama series Evil is finally being added to Netflix later this month. CBS/Paramount+ produced four seasons of the quirky, at times outrageous, horror-leaning show, but Evil finally died in 2024. Netflix subscribers have been able to enjoy the first two seasons of demonic action on the now-canceled series, but season 3 has been absent from the service, while Evil season 4 just streamed in 2024.
That’s all about to change, however, as Netflix reveals that Evil season 3 is finally being added to the lineup, beginning on December 31 (via Tudum). The first three seasons of the show are now available to Netflix subscribers, while season 4 remains a Paramount+ exclusive for the time-being.

The following contains spoilers for Evil, now streaming on Netflix and Paramount+Evil's best characters range from the heroic to the demonic, all filtered through the show's unique blend of character drama, unexpected comedy, and grim horror. Evil focuses on a group of "Assessors," tasked with the Church to investigate potential demonic forces operating on Earth. The procedural nature of the show allowed for almost every episode to have stand-alone qualities, even as it expanded the universe and explored the grim backstories of the central heroes.
One of the things that makes the show such a compelling watch (to the point where Stephen King was a vocal champion of Evil) is the attention paid to the show's central cast of characters. There are plenty of classic horror archetypes in the show's cast, but they're all given unexpected shades that make them uniquely compelling. These edges elevate the series into a fantastic show.

It’s somewhat fitting that a show so adept at exploring the unknown would find itself facing the unknown more often than not, which was often the case with the Paramount Plus cult hit horror series “Evil.”
The show, which followed a small team of “assessors” working for the Catholic church investigating all types of supernatural mysteries ranging from possessions to miracles, premiered to healthy buzz on CBS in 2019 and rave reviews from horror fans. But ratings were more modest by the end of Season 1, so Paramount opted to make the series a streaming exclusive on its fledgling (at the time) streaming service Paramount Plus.
After initially jumping from broadcast to streaming to survive potential cancelation, “Evil” would manage to hang on for four seasons and a total of 50 episodes, before wrapping its run in August of 2024 just in time for a full Halloween season binge. Paramount chose to end...

Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) has made her fair share of deals with devils. Over the course of four seasons of the Paramount+ show "Evil," the semi-skeptical forensic psychologist has killed a man, burned her hand on a cross, and had sex with a Satanic church founder. In the show's final season, she also helped raise the potential antichrist: a baby born via surrogate from her stolen eggs and world-class creep Leland Townsend's (Michael Emerson) DNA. It's no surprise, then, that "Evil" ends on a delightfully complicit note, with Kristen pulling an "I pretend I do not see it" meme when baby Timothy starts exhibiting some clear-cut signs of demonic possession.
In the series finale's final scene, Kristen and her daughters seem to have their happy ending. They've just moved to Rome and are loving it. Kristen is continuing her work surveying possible demonic activity alongside David (Mike Colter), the...

The aptly titled Tulsa King Season 2 premiere finds Dwight “The General” Manfredi back in the saddle, alright.
He’s fighting for his life, giving advice behind bars, and expanding his business, all while navigating new enemies poised to take action to either scuttle or take over his successful Tulsa operation.
Don’t get me wrong; I know he’ll prevail. What’s the point of a show with Sly Stallone behind bars? But still, Dwight’s got a lot on his plate.
(Brian Douglas/Paramount+) Are The Walls Closing in on Dwight?
Thanks to his arrest, it’s the first time anyone has paid attention to Dwight’s Tulsa presence, making things much harder on The General.
Maybe that’s why he constantly toys with the idea of going legit. It’s got to be hard to thrive with that kind of stress. There is always someone out to get him.

The following contains spoilers for Evil season 4 episode 14, "Fear of the End," now streaming on Paramount+Evil's season four finale is also effectively the ending of the fan-favorite horror series, even if it leaves a number of door open for further adventures. Across four seasons, Evil's central trio of psychiatric consultant Kristen Bouchard, priest David Acosta, and inventive contractor Ben Shakir have survived plenty of the worst kinds of threats the world can throw at them. Along the way, they've also confronted the darkest corners of their own mortality and come out the other side stronger and united in the face of evil.
This carries through the series finale, "Fear of the End," which brings back many elements from previous seasons and effectively works as a closing chapter of the series. This includes resolving their long-running conflict with the dangerous Leland, as well as their prickly relationship with the Catholic Church.

Hell hath no fury like fans who lose a brilliant show before its time. Such is the case with Evil, the supernatural series unlike anything else on screens. When word came down from on high that Evil would end with the conclusion of its fourth season, fans rallied online to save the show from cancelation, with the show’s brilliant star, Katja Herbers, leading the charge. Herber’s enthusiasm for the series is inspiring, with the actress championing the show’s continuation at every turn, signaling to networks and streamers that Team Evil is ready and willing to continue the show’s unique spin on the all but extinct and nostalgic monster-of-the-week formula. Helping to add fuel to Herbers’ fire is the Master of Horror himself, Stephen King, who recently sang Evil’s praises during a PBS News interview. With such a ringing endorsement from one of entertainment’s most sought-after creators,...

Kristen's friends intervene to prevent her from killing Leland, showing how murder can weigh on the soul, even if deserved. Leland had some redemptive qualities, shown when he tries to protect Kristen out of a twisted sense of affection. If Evil returns, it could explore Leland's halfhearted attempts to do good, revealing a different side to his character.
Evil star Katja Herbers sheds light on why her character doesn't kill Leland in the show's last episode. In the closing stretch of the Paramount+ supernatural horror series created by Robert and Michelle King, Leland heads to a silent retreat with his rival Sister Andrea. However, Leland's fate in the Evil series finale could have been much more gruesome before Kristen's friends intervened.

Taylor Sheridan has built a television empire with his Yellowstone universe. Now, he’s adding to it with a modern-day spinoff, The Madison.
Sheridan already blessed us with two Yellowstone prequels to satisfy our Western-series cravings: 1883 and 1923.
(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images for Warner Bros. Discovery)
With the future of the original series Yellowstone up in the air because of Kevin Costner’s departure, The Madison will be able to keep the Yellowstone universe going even without John Dutton, sadly.
It would have been cool to see Kevin Costner pop up in The Madison, but it’s not to be. But anything is possible in Hollywood these days, so you never know.
But The Madison will be anything but lacking in star power. Here’s what we know so far!
(Emerson Miller / Paramount) What is The Madison About?

One thing you never want to do on The Ark is poke the bear.
Especially if that bear has implants to augment its strength into the perfect killing machine.
If there has been one wild card amidst Season 2, it has been Kelly and her unpredictable “Post-Human” status. Audiences were introduced to Kelly and her homicidal tendencies in The Ark Season 1, and in Season 2, we’re learning that at the root of Kelly’s violent tendencies are her implants.

Her mother turned her into a controllable killing machine. However, every bit of new information about the experiments that were done on Kelly has brought out her humanity.
She was more than willing to sacrifice her life on multiple occasions to keep herself from hurting anyone else.

We wanted answers, and the creative team behind Sunny has finally found a way to give them to us. And they’re doing it in the most acid-tripping way possible.
Secrets and mysteries have been the series’ cornerstone since its first episode.
Luckily, Sunny is one of those shows where the journey is more fun than the destination.

However, the show wants to make sure the arrival is just as reality-bending as the trek has been.
For the entirety of Sunny Season 1, there has been question after question, with more introduced in every episode.

Unless you’ve been living on a secluded island or Amish country, adaptations of novels to screen is not a new concept to you.
It’s become one of the most common formulas for creating movies and TV shows.
From Netflix to Amazon, everyone wants a piece of the action.
(Courtesy of Apple TV+)
While not every project is a knockout, audiences have seen some successful franchises flourish from this method.
Just off the top of my head are the Harry Potter movies, Twilight, Hunger Games, 50 Shades of Grey, and even the Bridget Jones movies.
And it’s not just the big screen. TV saw the opportunity and jumped on board with shows like The Vampire Diaries, Game of Thrones, Percy Jackson, and The Witcher.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Evil series finale “Fear of the End.”] Evil certainly got meta in its final episodes, shutting down the assessor program that initially brought Kristen (Katja Herbers) into David (Mike Colter) and Ben’s (Aasif Mandvi) lives and setting them on new journeys. In the finale, for Kristen and David, that was continuing their work in a new setting (Rome), while Ben declined to do so, after taking a new job. But as Mandvi points out to TV Insider, the door is wide open for a continuation of sorts, and it’s not like it would be hard to bring the trio back together. Below, he discusses the end of the show, his hopes for more, and why Ben doesn’t regret not going to Rome. Talk about reading the finale script and your reaction to Ben’s ending. Aasif Mandvi: We were sort of told that the finale script was...

You’re going to want to cancel your Friday night plans for this one. The intimate series from Soo Hugh, which is adapted from Min Jin Lee’s 2017 novel of the same name, again stands out for the way it uses multiple timelines to tell the story of a Korean family living in Japan during the 20th century. In the new season — the first episode of which is now streaming — the timelines creep ever closer, and we see how Sunja’s life during the end of World War II connects with and compares to the lives of her family, including her grandson Solomon (Jin Ha), in the 1980s. For audiences, the four seasons of Robert and Michelle King’s “Evil” have been the stuff of nightmares. For Oscar-winning prosthetics artist Joel Harlow, it was the stuff of childhood dreams.
“This is the high water mark of my professional career in terms of artist fulfillment,” Harlow told IndieWire over Zoom a few days before the series finale aired August 22 on Paramount+. “This is what I wanted to do as a kid.”
Harlow means that literally. In most instances, the “Evil” script would merely say, “Joel will deliver us something terrifying.” And starting with the sleep paralysis demon George, that’s just what he did.
“Evil” followed three assessors for the Catholic church — a priest (Mike Colter), an agnostic psychiatrist (Katja Herbers), and an atheist scientist (Aasaf Mandvi) as they evaluated a case of the week to determine if an exorcism was needed while battling demons in their personal lives.

Warning: Major Spoilers ahead for the Evil series finale!
Katja Herbers, who plays Kristen, came up with the idea of Kristen purposefully hiding Timothy's demonic attributes at the end of Evil season 4. Kristen's complicity complicates her character moving forward, revealing she is aware of the supernatural and adding depth to her relationship with Timothy. Despite being cancelled after season 4, the show's ending leaves room for interpretive possibilities regarding the characters' future.
Evil co-creator Robert King has revealed how Kristen actor Katja Herbers changed season 4's ending, adding one detail that made something about the final scene more definitive. During the Evil series finale, Kristen moves her family to Rome to assist David in starting the Vatican's new assessor program overseas. In the final scene, though, she ends up seeing Timothy's eyes turn white before sharp fangs sprout from his mouth, something she swiftly hides with a pacifier before David's arrival.

Just like those Jason Dessens from all over the multiverse, the Apple TV+ hit Dark Matter is replicating.
Yup. The critically acclaimed science-fiction hit was recently renewed.
Now, there’s just one big catch. The first season was based entirely on Blake Crouch’s 2016 book.
(Apple TV+)
Dark Matter follows Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton), a physicist, professor, and family man who quickly is abducted and becomes a captive of the multiverse.
He spends the rest of the season experiencing lives he could have lived while attempting to get back to his home world and his family.
So that means the new season, whenever it finally arrives on the streaming timetable, will have to be created out of thin air.
As viewers of modern TV are acutely aware, this venturing away from the written source material can be a hit-or-miss proposition.

This article contains spoilers for Evil season 4 episode 14.
The title of Evil season 4 episode 14, “Fear of the End”* has a double meaning. It seems very likely the clocks will tick out on Father David Acosta (Mike Colter), Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), and Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi), as well as much of the ecclesiastical order, by the finale’s end. For fans who didn’t skip past the theme song, for old time’s sake, it also means Evil was much too short-lived a series. Creators and showrunners Robert and Michelle King are to be mourned. “Fear of the End” concludes as a finale, but feels like a death. There is more story to tell, and the final episode is littered with possibilities.
Note: The final four episodes of Evil season 4 technically constitute a “mini” fifth and final season for the show per Paramount+. But the cast and crew have...

Warning: Spoilers for the Evil series finale
Michelle and Robert King disagree on whether baby Timothy is the Antichrist despite his baptism, adding ambiguity to the Evil ending. The disagreement between the creators allows the show to work both ways, leaving viewers to form their own opinions. The ambiguity in the finale raises questions about Kristen's role as a potential mother to the living Antichrist, leaving the audience to ponder the outcome.
Evil creators Robert and Michelle King disagree about the series finale, especially the horror thriller's last scene. Even though Ben (Aasif Mandvi) stays behind, favoring his high-paying job, the trio are in a good place. Except that Kristen sees, for a brief flash, that her baby may be the Antichrist.

The cast of “Evil” was kind of expecting this to be their final season, actor Michael Emerson, who plays the diabolically delightful Leland Thompson on the series, told TheWrap ahead of the series finale.
“They were slow to suggest that we would keep going. What with the strike and all and some changes happening at Paramount+, I didn’t think [a renewal] was a given by any means,” he said of the show’s cancellation after four seasons.
However, he’s grateful that the show’s writers and creators Robert and Michelle King were able to “wrap up the series” as best they could in the final four episodes.
“It was a little fast. It’s hard to wrap up a bunch of narratives like our show has in four episodes. But I think the writers did a pretty good job of it,” he said.

As the dust settles on the finale of Evil Season 4, fans are left reeling from the twists, turns, and, of course, those tantalizing loose ends.
Who better to help us process it all than Katja Herbers, the incredible actress who has brought Kristen Bouchard to life for four thrilling seasons?
We caught up with Katja to chat about the finale, her character’s evolution, and what might be lurking in the shadows of a potential Season 5.
(Elizabeth Fisher/Paramount+) A Character Like No Other
From the moment Evil premiered, we haven’t been able to take our eyes off of Kristen Bouchard. She’s a psychologist, a mother, a reluctant demon hunter, and, let’s not forget, a murderer. But how does Katja see Kristen?
“She’s so much, and she’s been so many versions of herself,” Katja mused. “She wasn’t a murderer before she started the show,...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about the Evil series finale “Fear of the End,” which dropped this morning on Paramount+
In the end, Evil truly brought evil to the heart of the Catholic church with a potential Antichrist baby now being wheeled around the sunny Vatican by its mother Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) and its priestly guardian of sorts David Acosta (Mike Colter).
Talk about going dark.
“The punchline at the end, is this kid possibly, or probably, is the Antichrist, and Lexis (Maddy Crocco), the second youngest, is probably going to be this evil protector to him,” says Evil co-creator and finale director Robert King of the fanged and white-eyed baby staring up at his mother. “Then it comes down to Kristen, who’s always mother first to protect those two, and actually probably to the detriment of humankind, but to the benefit of her family, which is just comic to us.

As fans of Evil, we’ve been on a wild ride through the bizarre and often terrifying world of paranormal investigations, theological debates, and the intricacies of human (and sometimes not-so-human) relationships.
But amidst all the chaos and confusion, one character has consistently provided a mix of humor, skepticism, and heartfelt moments: Ben Shakir, played by the ever-talented Aasif Mandvi.
In a candid conversation following the explosive Evil Season 4 finale, Aasif shared his thoughts on Ben’s journey, his own personal connections to the character, and what it was like wearing that infamous tinfoil hat.
(Elizabeth Fisher/Paramount+) The Tinfoil Hat Saga: A Symbol of Absurdity
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering what happened to Ben’s tinfoil hat between Episodes 13 and 14, you’re not alone.
Aasif has a theory: “Once [Ben] decided to leave the ghostbuster business, he basically didn’t need that tinfoil anymore; the gin kind of stopped bothering him.

Daniel Fienberg: How the blazes have we reached the end of the summer already? Sorry, Matthew McConaughey in True Detective. Time isn’t a flat circle. It’s a vortex, and the summer of 2024 got sucked right in.
Since June, politics has given us The Worst Debate in History, an assassination attempt, a new Republican vice-presidential candidate (and attendant memes), a sitting president dropping out of the race, a new Democratic presidential nominee, and the meteoric rise of her avuncular running mate, whom 95 percent of Americans couldn’t have picked out of a lineup in May.
Smack in between two political conventions, our attentions shifted to Paris for the Olympics, where we marveled at the largely E. coli- and entirely shark-free beauty of the Seine, celebrated Simone Biles, ogled French pole vaulters, held our breath through one impossible comeback after another, and attempted to make sense of competitive breakdancing...

This post contains spoilers for "Evil."
The age of streaming is full of problems. TV shows are getting extremely expensive, seasons are getting too short while the wait between them becomes too long, and shows are getting canceled before they have a chance to hit their groove. Even when shows are successful according to every metric, they can get canceled just for reasons that have nothing to do with their quality, like corporate cost-cutting.
Such is the case with "Evil," the best horror TV show since "Hannibal" and "The Exorcist." It's a series that mixes network procedurals with all-time great tales of the macabre, giving audiences monster-of-the-week stories that not only feature some of the best creature work on TV, but also tell poignant stories about the hell of modern existence and how the devil can't compare to the evil of the internet and late-stage capitalism. For four seasons, "Evil...
