Flickering Myth’s Tai Freligh attended a recent press tour for Disney Pixar’s Incredibles 2 DVD release and sat down to talk with director Domee Shi and producer Becky Neiman-Cobb about Bao, the short film that ran in front of Incredibles 2 in theaters and is also available on the home video release.

Shi has the distinction of being the first female director of an animated short at Pixar Studios. We asked Domee and Becky what the reaction to the film was from not only the Asian community, but film-goers in general, to talk a bit about the representation of strong moms in both films, the state of opportunities for women in animation, and whether or not she’s working on a feature-length film or not (hint: she is).

Tai Freligh interviews Brad Bird and John Walker about Incredibles 2

Flickering Myth’s Tai Freligh recently attended a press event at Pixar Studios and had the chance to interview director Brad Bird and producer John Walker about this year’s hugely successful sequel Incredibles 2.

With Bird having been pretty vocal about the importance of seeing movies in the theater, we asked him whether or not he thought having a DVD version of the movie was a necessary evil, as well as any concerns that there might not have been an audience for a follow up to The Incredibles coming fourteen years after the first. And, having directed a Mission: Impossible movie, we wanted his take on Christopher McQuarrie’s Fallout film and what he thought of Superman actor Henry Cavill as a villain.

Review: The Incredibles 2 (2018)

In 2004 Pixar Animation Studios relished the glory days of superhero fiction in The Incredibles, which had the throwback style of a comic strip, with the memorably Jazzy score and a collection of unforgettable characters. In the years since then, the film’s relatable reflections of family life and engaging action have made it a bit of a favourite among some fans, who have passionately craved a sequel. However, director Brad Bird has remained steadfast – despite being asked countlessly – that he would only do a sequel if the story were right. Well, 14 years on and with the hype train full to busting, Incredibles 2 is finally here and thankfully, the wait was more than worth it!

From the Incrediblised Disney castle ident onwards, you sink back into this world so effortlessly that it is as though these characters never left at all. Picking up where the last film left off, you

Incredibles 2 review – riotous return of Pixar's superhero immortals

The sequel to the animated masterpiece about a family with world-saving superpowers is just as thrilling and just as much fun

The Incredibles, like The Simpsons, are eternally the same age, although for them the miracle has been brought off by just starting the sequel at the exact point the first movie left off. We are still in the Lbj 60s, superheroes are still illegal and the Incredibles’ stroppy teen daughter Violet (voiced by Sarah Vowell) is on the verge of dating that nice boy she met in school.

It is indeed incredible to think that the first film came out in 2004, just before the Marvel Studios explosion of fan-oriented superhero films changed the cultural weather, creating an audience for whom the Incredibles’ uncanonical characters and satirical deconstruction of superhero conventions are not entirely cool, however affectionately intended. But The Incredibles is for me still the greatest film from the
