John Brawley has developed a reputation as one of Australia's most talented and sought after Directors of Photography, who works with vision, speed and an inherently collaborative nature. Working increasingly in the US, John continues to build that reputation internationally.
John just wrapped production on the USA drama series Queen of the South starring Alice Braga and will next shoot Fox's new medical drama series The Resident for producers Amy Holden Jones and Antoine Fuqua. Last year, John shot the Lifetime remake of Beaches starring Idina Menzel and Nia Long and a new Australian series The Warriors for acclaimed Australian producer Robert Connolly. His other recent credits include the Syfy/UCP series Hunters, produced by Gale Anne Hurd, Natalie Chaidez and Matchbox Pictures and The Beautiful Lie, for ABC Television, which received considerable critical and audience acclaim and earned him an AACTA nomination for Best Cinematography in Television. In 2014, John shot the political drama Party Tricks for Network Ten and Hiding for ABC Television. He also shot the first six seasons of the beloved Network Ten series Offspring and prior to that shot both series of acclaimed Network Ten series Puberty Blues, using a ground breaking mix of cutting edge technology and period lenses. Other television credits include Underbelly: Squizzy for Nine, Tangle for Foxtel,and the prime time television comedy series Lowdown and Twentysomething for ABC Television.
John has made strides in the feature world too, having shot several films including 100 Bloody Acres directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes, Lake Mungo and The Perfect Host, a US feature film starring David Hyde Pierce, which screened at Sundance in 2010 and received a US release.
John graduated with an MA from the prestigious Australian Film Television and Radio School and holds dual US/Australian citizenship.
