The 70th annual Golden Reel Awards were handed out on Sunday night, honoring the best achievements in sound editing across film, television, video games and student work.

The top three film awards were handed to “Top Gun: Maverick,” “The Banshees Of Inisherin” and “Elvis” which won for feature effects/foley, feature dialogue/Adr and feature music respectively. All three films are also nominated for the top prize, best picture at the 95th Academy Awards which will be handed out on March 12.

Other winners included “Moonage Daydream,” “Good Night Oppy” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.”

‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ ‘Elvis,’ ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ Make Noise at Sound Editors’ Awards
Motion Picture Sound Editors spread the wealth at the 70th Golden Reel Awards, its first in-person ceremony since the start of the pandemic, held in a new venue, L.A.’s Wilshire Ebell Theatre.

In the feature competition, winners included the teams from Top Gun: Maverick, for effects and Foley; Elvis, for music editing; All Quiet on the Western Front, for a foreign language film; and in a surprise, The Banshees of Inisherin, for dialogue and Adr.

A day after winning the PGA and top Annie Awards, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio collected the prize for sound editing in an animated feature. In nonfiction filmmaking, Good Night Oppy won the category for sound editing in feature documentary; and Moonage Daydream, for music editing in a feature doc.

Motion Picture Sound Editors Reveal 70th Mpse Golden Reel Nominations
The Motion Picture Sound Editors on Monday unveiled nomination for the 70th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards. Winners will be announced February 26 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.

The organization of professional sound and music editors honors the year’s outstanding feature film, television, animation, computer entertainment, and student productions.

The Mpse will also honor Jerry Bruckheimer with its 2023 Filmmaker Award, and Gwendolyn Yates Whittle with its Career Achievement Award.

Top Gun: Maverick, The Batman, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Dune are among the movies that received multiple Hpa (Hollywood Professional Association) Award nominations. The annual Hpa Awards recognizes postproduction talent in areas including color grading, editing, sound and visual effects.

The voting period runs from September to September, meaning that some of last year’s award season films will compete against this year’s contenders.

The awards will be handed out Nov. 17 at the Hollywood Legion Theater.

‘Dune,’ ‘Nightmare Alley,’ ‘West Side Story’ Win at Sound Editors’ Awards
Dune,” “Nightmare Alley” and “West Side Story” have won the top feature-film awards at the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday night.

Dune” won in the Feature Effects/Foley category, which over the years has been the Mpse’s most accurate predictor of Oscar success. “Nightmare Alley” won in the Feature Dialogue/Adr category, while “West Side Story” won in the music category.

Other film awards went to “Raya and the Last Dragon” for animation, “The Rescue” for documentary and “Cliff Walkers” for foreign-language feature.

Television winners included “Succession,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “The Underground Railroad,” “The Witcher” and “The Beatles Get Back.”

Director and producer Ron Howard received the Filmmaker Award, while Anthony J. “Chic” Ciccolini III received the Career Achievement Award.

Motion Picture Sound Editors Wins Give ‘Dune’ and ‘West Side Story’ Oscar Momentum
The Oscar-frontrunner “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “Nightmare Alley” (Searchlight Pictures), and “West Side Story” (20th Century Studios) each won sound editing feature awards Sunday night at the 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards (held virtually). “Dune” took feature effects/foley, “Nightmare Alley,” a non-Oscar nominee and surprise winner over “Dune” and “No Time to Die,” snagged feature dialogue/Adr, and Oscar nominee “West Side Story” collected feature music. The other Oscar sound nominees are “Belfast” (Focus Features), “No Time to Die” (MGM/UA), and “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix).

There were other surprises: Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” triumphed in animation over the studio’s Oscar-frontrunner, “Encanto,” which has won a slew of guild awards, and “The Rescue” (Disney+) took feature documentary over Oscar-frontrunner “Summer of Soul” (Searchlight Pictures). It was a clear victory for sci-fi sound editing Sunday night at the 65th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure. “War for the Planet of the Apes” was the surprise winner for Dialogue/Adr, splitting honors with “Blade Runner 2049,” which grabbed the Effects/Foley prize. The big loser was “Dunkirk” (which won the BAFTA sound award earlier Sunday). However, Christopher Nolan’s World War II survival epic took home the Music Score award and remains the sound editing Oscar favorite.

In addition, “The Greatest Showman,” “Coco,” “Loveless,” and “Jane” earned sound editing awards for Musical, Animation, Foreign Language, and Documentary. Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” earned the top two sound editing awards Sunday night at the 64th Mpse Golden Reel Awards, while Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” and Disney’s “Moana” took musical and animation honors.

The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble” and “Warcraft: The Beginning” won for documentary and score.

Hacksaw Ridge” now becomes the favorite to beat “La La Land” in the Oscar battle.

Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.

“2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said Mpse president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television.
