Indie Spotlight

We return with the latest edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes release details for A Resurrection, the first teaser trailer for Ten, a review of Smiley, and much more:

First Teaser Trailer for Ten: “Ten is a collectivist, post-exploitation psychological thriller devised as a possible explanation for the events of the 1972 Spektor Island Massacre. On a cold December afternoon, ten women arrive at a mansion on Spektor Island, famed for years of reported hauntings and strange activities. Will they live through the night?

The all-female cast film is a response to exploitation, slasher, and thriller films, with particular focus on the kind of storytelling prominent in b-movies and genre films from the 1950s to the 1980s. It explores the meaning and fluidity of identity and takes a number of surprising turns, paying homage to filmmakers and producers such as Alfred Hitchcock,

Review Round-Up: The Dinosaur Project & Dragon Wasps

The Dinosaur Project

Stars: Natasha Loring, Matt Kane, Richard Dillane, Peter Brooke, Stephen Jennings | Written by Sid Bennett, Jay Basu | Directed by Sid Bennett

The Dinosaur Project is the (fictional) story of a missing Congo expedition and the findings of the Cryptozoological Society to audiences around the world. The film features stunning recovered footage of creatures thought to be extinct for 65 million years. As the search for the missing crew continues, questions remain about the source of the missing footage and the manner in which it was discovered.

Before I go any further, here’s the now-defacto disclaimer: This is a found-footage movie. And you all know how much I despise the sub-genre. When it’s done wrong it’s usually done Very wrong and when it’s good… Well I can’t remember the last time it was! What also works against The Dinosaur Project is that you just

Geek Gossip: Jungle terror with Dragon Wasps; supernatural scares in The Pact; Phantasm star returns to get Brutal

Now the British summer has made a belated reappearance, we can expect a few downsides such as hay fever, sunburn and insect bites - but no flying pests in our gardens can rival Dragon Wasps. And a can of the standard repellent probably won't do much good either.

This giant creature feature is written by Mark Atkins. His previous genre outings include numerous hit-inspired 'mockbusters' such as Snakes on a Train, 30,000 Leagues Under The Sea, War of the Worlds 2, Allan Quartermain and the Temple of Skulls, Princess of Mars (an alternative version of John Carter), Battle of Los Angeles and Avh: Alien vs Hunter.

He's also been involved in several dragon-themed productions including Dragonquest, Merlin and the War of the Dragons, and Dragon Crusaders.

Now offering an insect slant on the concept, the cast of Dragon Wasps features Corin Nemec (Stargate Sg-1, Smallville, Supernatural), Dominika Juillet (Dark Angel), Benjamin Easterday

Second clip from ‘Dragon Wasps’

Chelsea Films are set to unleash an army of dragon wasps across the UK, well I say unleash an army of wasps – they’re actually going to release the DVD of giant-insect flick Dragon Wasps, which stars Corin Nemec (Stargate Sg-1; Smallville; Supernatural), Dominika Juillet (Dark Angel), Benjamin Easterday (Stargate SG1; Fast & Furious 5) and Nikolette Noel (The Expendables 2), in the UK on September 24th.

Written by Mark Atkins, whose work you may know from films such as Sand Sharks, Battle of Los Angeles and Princess of Mars, and directed by Joe Knee (Cult), Dragon Wasps is best described as the ultimate cross breed between timely jungle thrillers like Predator and Anaconda and gigantic critter delights such as Eight Legged Freaks and Lake Placid, in other words it’s a relentless giant-creature action hybrid that blows Roger Corman right out of the water!

Following the release of the first clip in early August,

Dragon Wasps Trailer Fully Loaded with Giant Fire-Breathing Bug Action

Piranhaconda isn’t the only new b-movie creature trailer dropping today. Gigantic fire-spewing wasps terrorize soldiers in the trailer for Dragon Wasps. Is it wrong I think this looks more fun than Piranhaconda?

Typically wasps are known for their stingers. Stingers look to be the least of your worries here what with these dragon wasps earning their namesake with their ability to project fire like flying flamethrowers.

Mr. Syfy Corin Nemec stars in Dragon Wasps from director Joe Knee (Ghost Game) and writers Mark Atkins (Sand Sharks) and Rafael Jordan (Jabberwock). Dominika Wolski, Nikolette Noel, and Gildon Roland co-star.

Blood and Chrome trailer screened, Falling Skies season two premiere date, interview with Remi Aubuchon, and general updates

Just a few updates to end the week.

Blood and Chrome trailer was shown at the BSG panel at WonderCon this weekend. Hero Complex has a report from the panel with Kevin Grazier. Here is a description of the trailer (no, it's not available anywhere yet):

At the end of his talk, Grazier screened a trailer for the upcoming “Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome,” a two-hour television film which is set in the 10th year of the First Cylon War. Edited at rapid-cutting pace to Trent Reznor and Karen O’s cover of “Immigrant Song” for “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” – which was actually quite fitting with images of ice-covered planets and (space)ships – the trailer ended with title cards flashing the words “It’s time for a SyFy game-changer.”Still no official word on what Blood and Chrome is (a TV film or a pilot) even though

  • IFC
A look at what's new on DVD today:

"Meskada" (2010)

Directed by Josh Sternfeld

Released by Anchor Bay Entertainment

When this thriller premiered at Tribeca this past spring, Alison Willmore wrote, "the second film from writer/director Josh Sternfeld ("Winter Solstice") has ambitions reaching beyond being a straightforward police procedural," though critics, including her, were mixed about the end result. Nick Stahl and Rachel Nichols star as small-town sleuths who investigate a botched home invasion case that claims the life of a young child in an affluent community and enflames class divisions when the main suspects are from the poorer community nearby. Grace Gummer, Meryl Streep's second daughter to go into the family profession, makes her film debut.

"Anywhere USA" (2008)

Directed by Chusy Haney-Jardine

Released by Cinevolve Studios

Winner of a Spirit of Independence prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Chusy Haney-Jardine's collection of three comic vignettes involves a
