He first got recognition when he gained News headlines in 2005 when he was arrested on a felony charge for "Threatening the life of a Police Officer" in his song Psycho Path Killahs. It was later dismissed when the News stations aired the case and the Solicitor dropped the charges. According to Devin Patrick, he wrote the song after the alleged officer made prejudice remarks toward him to a close friend. He removed the song from his website after being arrested but later released an edited version omitting the officers name. Around 2006 he took a break from recording music to pursue beat production and audio engineering. While in college he began working at the Jam Room recording studio. While there he was introduced to Darren "D-Luv" Martin (now Sheen Magazine owner), who signed him to his R&B label Love Town Productions as a producer. There he produced two notable radio hit singles (Crazy & 2 Fly) for singer Debbi and a few other tracks.
After creative differences he left in 2007. During this time he returned to rap releasing MySpace singles "I Got It and Bounce Bounce", both gained huge internet popularity in his region. They then began recording the project at the Jam Room, where he helped on sessions for hit songs "Don't I Look Good, I'm Spinnin' It & The Nasty Song"; which finally landed Lil Ru a deal with Def Jam. After several meetings with the Head Hunter they were unable to secure a mutual deal for Patrick.
