Singing Chen

Singing Chen's work encompasses fiction, documentary and VR films with multiple festival accolades. Her debut feature, Bundled (2000), a story about the homeless and dispossessed, competed at Vancouver and won prizes at both Fribourg and Taipei Film Festival. Her follow-up feature, God, Man, Dog (2007) screened at over 30 festivals including Busan's New Current Competition, and the Berlinale, where it won the Tagesspiegel Readers' Prize for Best Film. She also makes short dramas focusing on characters on the margins of society, notably The Clock (2011) and The Pig (2013), while turning her attention to documentary, especially in relation to artistic practice, dance, and the environment. The Walkers (2014) her acclaimed documentary of the Legend Lin Dance Theatre, the result of ten years of documentation, exemplifies this practice, combining physical dance with landscape and nature. Her fascination with space and movement led her to explore VR technology: Afterimage for Tomorrow (2018) was exhibited at the NewImages Festival. Her latest VR experience The Man Who Couldn't Leave (2022) won Venice Immersive Best Experience at 79th Venice International Film Festival. Chen's collective work is marked by a deep empathy for disenfranchised characters and a strong sense of social justice. Chen's new project The Clouds Are Two Thousand Meters Up has been selected for the 2023 Venice Gap-Financing Market, and she will also serve as the President of the Jury for the Venice Immersive Competition.
