Review: Mars

  • Comicmix
When some of the smartest people alive today insist we need to begin colonizing other worlds, you tend to believe them. When science fiction fans hear those words, we begin to salivate at the possibilities.

National Geographic cannily appeals to both audiences with their hybrid miniseries Mars, which mixes today’s science with tomorrow’s fiction by positing what the actual colonization of the planet, a mere 140 million miles away, might look like. Yeah, we got a glimpse of that in the adaptation of Andrew Weir’s The Martian, but this goes further and shows more of the risks involved.

The miniseries, out now from 20th Century Home Entertainment, is a captivating piece of work if unevenly assembled. You get all the usual suspects weighing in why and how we might get there including Space X guru Elon Musk and the ubiquitous Neil deGrasse Tyson. Accompanied by a Greek chorus of Nasa scientists and engineers,

TV Review: National Geographic’s ‘Mars,’ From Producers Brian Grazer and Ron Howard

TV Review: National Geographic’s ‘Mars,’ From Producers Brian Grazer and Ron Howard
Science fiction is usually lumped in with fantasy and myth under the umbrella term “genre fiction,” encompassing those stories that feature devices and occurrences that do not happen in our world. An enchanted sword, a demigod, a craft capable of traveling faster than the speed of light — they mean different things, but they are all distant from our current reality.

But science fiction carries with it more plausibility than the other genres. At its core is the idea that its visions could be possible, with all of the wonder and terror that implies. With this in mind, “Mars,” a hybrid documentary/space opera from National Geographic executive produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, explores what it positions as an essential task for humanity — the pilgrimage to the red planet, both as a scripted story of intrepid explorers in 2033 and a documentary investigating where we currently stand in the quest to jump planets. The Making of NatGeo’s ‘Mars’: Inside the Out-of-This-World Mission

The Making of NatGeo’s ‘Mars’: Inside the Out-of-This-World Mission
Making a documentary with crews in 19 locations around the world is tricky. Making that doc intertwined with a drama set on two planets and over two decades is out-of-this-world complicated.

Mars” is National Geographic Channel’s most ambitious solo project. Premiering Nov. 14, it features scientists explaining how humans will colonize the Red Planet. Dramatic scenes are set in 2033 when a diverse crew lands.

It’s a tough voyage. The show’s journey was almost as challenging.

RadicalMedia initially wanted to do a documentary about Elon Musk, the visionary behind Tesla and SpaceX, who is making rockets to go to Mars.

“Elon wanted to tell a bigger story about why, as humanity, we need to leave this planet and become an interplanetary species,” says Justin Wilkes, president, entertainment, RadicalMedia.

Musk suggested Ron Howard and Brian Grazer become involved in making this a major production. Luckily, Jon Kamen, RadicalMedia CEO, and Wilkes are friends with Imagine Entertainment’s Academy

Film Review: ‘The Unseen’

Film Review: ‘The Unseen’
Of all the original classic movie monsters institutionalized by Universal in the 1930s, the least loved or revived is the Invisible Man — perhaps because his plight is inherently a less-than-ideally-cinematic one, more interesting in psychological than action or suspense terms. The last notable big-screen attempt, Paul Verhoeven’s 2000 Hollywood swansong “Hollow Man,” took a predictably blunt, crass approach to upping the concept’s sex-and-violence potential.

Going in the opposite direction is “The Unseen,” about a loner whose disappearing act is metaphorical as much as it is literal, where the latter is ultimately the least successful in what’s otherwise a nicely crafted if not entirely satisfying drama of a man struggling to retain any connection to human society. But it’s that fantastical element which will give writer-director Geoff Redknap’s Canadian debut feature the moderate commercial viability it wouldn’t have had as a straightforward portrait of individual isolation

Lawrence & Holloman Review

Dark comedy is a difficult thing to get right. The humor must be daring enough to go to uncompromising places, but mean and sardonic jokes only work if they are funny. The issue with jokes that aim to be savage and nasty is that they are also easy to make: it is simple to poke fun at someone in a vulgar way if the humor depends on humiliating that target. It is too simple for a screenwriter to whip up a joke that emasculates a male character – for instance, one making fun of their lack of sexual prowess – and put it down on the page. Similarly, it also demands little effort to turn the person who is making that crude joke into a boorish stereotype.

On those counts, Lawrence & Holloman is a comedic failure, a film empty of originality, compassion or humanity. Director and co-writer Matthew Kowalchuk does not give
