He wrote interviews and movie reviews for Newsweek magazine.
He wrote for Sesame Street in the early 1970s. He created the character Herry Monster. Herry's personality was inspired by his first child, Ian.
Despite being politically progressive, he was a Republican delegate to the 1984 convention. He was the only man not to vote for Reagan. The purpose of his abstention was to bring attention to the possibilities of world peace and a nuclear freeze. His good friend Terry Jones of Monty Python has his delegate badge.
