It is truly amazing how many indie thrillers release each year under the radar. The Sacred is just such an obscure film from second time director Jose Zambrano Cassella. This film deals with an ancient Native American curse. Five archaeology students set out to investigate an ancient Floridian tribe and instead they find a warning: "only those with a pure heart may pass judgement." And in modern times those pure hearts are harder and harder to find.
So, these five friends find a guide to take them to an ancient native camp. They are warned to return by nightfall, but the forces on the island have other plans for them. Pete (David Mackey), Miranda (Jessica Blackmore), Jackie...

*full disclosure: a Blu-Ray screener of this film was provided by Indican Pictures.
Director/writer: Ric La Monte.
The Tenant is a feature that went straight-to-video August 9th on DVD and Blu-Ray through Indican Pictures. This is a film that stars Michael Berryman, Randy Molnar and Bill Cobbs, in what is a slow burn initially that changes into a predictable film later. The Tenant blends genres from horror to science fiction with some film elements hampering the enjoyment of the film. There are audio issues early that will have some audience members playing with their remotes. Turn the volume up, then down! and again. Also the acting from Ashley Totin is atrociously bad. Laughing during your murder is not the performance you should be after. And horror genre fans will see the late character reveal a mile away. This makes The Tenant hard to recommend.
The plot breaks down as follows: Dr.

How many good killer indian movies have there ever been? Scalps? Memorial Valley Massacre? The Thanksgiving episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Well Jose Zambrano Cassella's (Delivery) The Sacred, doesn't look like it is going to add anything spectacular to the sub-genre, but if you were dying for a new burial ground revenge flick here you go. The Sacred arrives on DVD October 10, 2009. A group of university students travel to a remote patch of land deep in the Florida swamps to complete their thesis project on native american folklore. A couple of hundred years ago, this sacred land was used by indians to judge criminals and unwanted members of the tribal community. According to legend, these grounds have the power to bring “sins” back to life, to bring the dead back to life, punishing or killing whoever is guilty of serious crimes. As the students quickly find out, past...

Ninjas. They seem to be everywhere nowadays. There’s that Rain guy who is the “Ninja Assassin”, Scott Adkins is also doing the ninja thing, and now Jose Zambrano Cassella is getting in on the ninja action with “The Last Ninja”. Way too many ninjas, you say? Nonsense! At least not if you grew up in the ’80s with Sho Kosugi kicking ass as the ninja, then you can never have enough too many ninja movies. With the discipline of a warrior, the stealth of a viper and the blade of the devil, The Last Ninja is a powerful, action-packed story spanning generations. Ken Harumi is the last descendent of the Samurai, trained from boyhood in the ancient art of Ninjutsu to become one of the most dangerous assassins in Japan. Faced with a choice between good and evil, his actions propel him into a high stakes game with an underground society of mercenaries.

June is going to be a busy month for DVD releases. We're going to get supernatural horrors, Italian shockers, and Sci-Fi Channel schlockers; not to mention one hell of an Asylum mocker. Here's a taste of things to come.
What better place to begin than with Lionsgate's June 16th release of Richard Friedman's Born. Starring Joan Severence, Denise Crosby, and Kane Hodder, it's another one of those demon baby in the womb horror flicks. This time out a virginal 21-year old (Alison Brie) wakes up impregnated by a demon (Hodder, of course); the demonic baby eventually overtakes her mind and sends her on a killing spree. I've come across some reviews of Born online, and let's just say most would have preferred this film to be retitled Abort. Only the best from Lionsgate.

The first official trailer for Jose Zambrano Cassella's Extremely well shot indie horror The Sacred dropped a couple days back and it looks like we're the first to find it. There was some rumbling in the community back in September but since then all's been pretty quiet. It's great to see the film is staying on course, even if it is coming upon us little later than expected.

The story is a pretty cool twits on the standard 'ancient burial ground demon awakening' pic.

Don't go messing around in the Florida swamps. Trust me here; I've got a bullet in my leg and gator bite marks to prove it's just a bad idea. Though ... I would risk it all again if it guaranteed a supernatural experience.
According to Fangoria filmmaker Jose Zambrano Cassella is a man after my own heart. The director is about to wrap on his current project called The Sacred (official site), a tale about some students who get in over their heads while trying to research local Native American folklore. It's not really the locals who give them much grief, instead that task is up the land itself, which can materialize the dead, sins and past mistakes.
